"Uncle Remus," Joel asked in the evening, when the old
man seemed to be doing nothing, "tell me, when the Fox caught the Rabbit
with a Stuffed Rabbit, did he not kill it and eat it?"
—Didn't I tell you about it, buddy?"
Well, yes, I was sleepy, and everything was confused in my head, and mom just
called you. What were we talking about then? I remember, I remember. Are you,
in any way, already rubbing your eyes? No, cry for Brother Rabbit wait. Was it
for nothing that he was so nimble? You listen to what happens next.
It means that Brother Rabbit is glued to the
Scarecrow, and the Old Fox is rolling on the ground, well, laughing. And then
he says:
- It seems to me, Brother Rabbit, I've caught
you this time. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that I've caught it. You've
been jumping around and making fun of me, but now your jokes are over. And who
asked you to mind your own business? And why did you give up this Stuffed
Animal? And who stuck you to it? No one, no one in the whole world! No one asked
you, but you just took it yourself and stuck into this Scarecrow! And it's all
your fault, Brother Rabbit! That's what you need, and you're going to sit there
until I get some firewood and light it, because of course I'm going to roast
you today, Brother Rabbit.
That's what the Old Fox said.
And the Rabbit answers so meekly, obediently:
— Do with me what you want, brother Fox, but
please don't try to throw me into this thorn bush. Fry me any way you want.
Brother Fox, just don't throw me into this thorn bush.
- Perhaps it's too much fuss with the fire, -
says the Fox.- Perhaps I'd rather hang you, Brother Rabbit.
"Hang it as high as you want, Brother
Fox," says the Rabbit, "if only you don't try to throw me into this
thorn bush."
- I don't have a rope, — says the Fox, — so I
think I'll drown you.
- Drown me as deep as you want, Brother Fox, -
says the Rabbit, - just don't throw me into this thorn bush.
But Brother Fox wanted to deal with the Rabbit
harder; - Well, - he says, - since you're afraid, I'll just throw you into the
thorn bush.
- Where are you! - says Brother Rabbit. — I'm
too heavy with a Scarecrow, you can't do it.
The Fox grabbed the Rabbit by the ears and
shook it! It peeled off, the Scarecrow fell.
— And here I will, - says the Fox.
How he swings, how he throws a Rabbit into the
middle of a thorn bush, even the crackling went.
The Fox stood up on his hind legs, looking at
what would happen to the Rabbit. Suddenly he hears someone calling him. Lo and
behold - there, on the hill. Brother Rabbit is sitting on a log, leg on leg,
sitting-sitting, combing the resin out of the wool with a sliver.
The Fox realized then that he had been made a
fool of again. And Brother Rabbit wants to annoy him, he screams:
- The thorn bush is my home. Brother Fox! The
thorn bush is my home!
He jumped up and disappeared like a cricket in
the ashes.
