Teacher: (to the students)
1. To begin
with see the well known quotation – “Life without books is as a tree without
leaves.”
Do
you agree with this opinion? Do you like reading?
Do you have many books at
home? How often do you go to the library? Do you buy books? Are you in the
habit of working in the reading room? If yes, what kind of material do you
usually look through? Do you give interesting books to your friends? Do you
discuss any books with your parents? What book are you reading now?
2. Vocabulary list № 1:
Teacher: See the
words on the blackboard:

autobiography, a detective story, a love story, a ghost story, a myth, a travel
story, a textbook, an adventure story, a fairy tale, a humorous story, an

Neutral:
3. Teacher:Express your attitude to different books.
Use
the words and expressions:
I love, I adore, am fond of,
I am crazy about, I don’t care about, I am indifferent to, I hate, I can’t
stand, …make me feel bored, …get on my nerves, …drive me mad, I love, I am
captivated with, I like.
4.Teacher: Now have a look at the new list of words:
Catching, interesting,
original, naïve, primitive, nothing to speak about, boring, wonderful, true to
life, dull, excellent, cool, wacky, trash, great, so so, mere abracadabra,
pretty bad mess, enjoyable informative, useful.
Teacher: You see,
people read different books as tastes really differ and it is quite natural.
And now can you tell me how
do you like different genres of books and why?
Your answer may
look like this:
I love reading
horror stories as they seem catching to me. On the other hand I am crazy about
biographies as they contain many interesting facts, On the other hand love
stories make no difference to me as I think that they are usually dull and
boring.
5. And how do
various books differ?
Guess what kind of book I am
speaking about:
1) These books are especially
popular with little children.
2) You can find any
information you like.
3) All schoolchildren usually
have them.
4) They are full of romances.
5) They reflect real life.
6) They tell us about the
future of our planet.
7) They are packed with
criminal situations.
Students: I guess you mean…
6. Now lets read a short text about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Fill In the chart:
1) Date of birth:
2) Place of birth;
3) Occupation:
4) Former profession:

So, what can you tell me
about the author? Is he popular in many countries? What kind of books did he
write? When and where was he born? What was his first occupation? Was he a
success? What books of the writer have you read? What is your attitude to his
books and why?

learn the dialogue by heart. Copy the dialogue.
- What kind of books do you
like reading?
- Well, it depends. Most
often I read references as I can find any information I want there.
- And what book can you
advise me to read.
-I woud recommend you to read
detective stories or something like this.
-Why?
- I think they are really
cool and can help you relax.
- Really? Thank you. I’d
rather follow your advice.
- It’s a pleasure.
9
In the end read a little rhyme about books:
My Book
I will not soot this little
book.
Not drop it on the floor.
I will not turn its corners
down
To spoil it more and more.
My book is a little friend to
me,
And so a friend to it I’ll
be.
Home task:
Tell about Conan Doyle using
the chart you’ve done in class. Learn the little poem by heart.
