Teacher:
Hello to everybody! Today we are going to have a very special lesson – “Love in
the past and nowadays”. Love is the strongest and the most universal feeling of
people of all times. Love… This word can have many different meanings, but all
people would agree that they want to love and to be loved.
Many famous people
wrote or spoke about love. Let’s read and translate some of these quotations.
“Love looks not with
eyes, but with the mind,
And thus is winged Cupid
painted blind”. (W. Shakespeare)
“Love is an education in
itself”. (Eleanor Roosevelt)
"Love is the
condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your
own."
(Robert Heinlein, American science-fiction writer (1907-1988)
"We come to
love not by finding a perfect person,
but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly"
( Sam Keen, Love. Men and Women., American writer, philosopher (1938)
"Each moment
of a happy lover's hour is worth an age of dull and common life"
(Aphra Behn, English Novelist, Poet (1640-1689)
Now let’s discuss some
questions.
-
What
do you think of love?
-
What
is more important for a person: to love or to be loved?
Poetry is considered to
be the best way to express people’s fillings.
Many poets wrote verses
about love. William Shakespeare devoted to love many of his sonnets. Let’s
listen to some of them in original and translated by S.Marshak
SONNET
130
By William Shakespeare
My
mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral
is far more red then her lips' red;
If
snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If
hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I
have seen roses damask'd, red and white,
But
not such roses see I in her cheeks;
And
in some perfume is there more delight
Than
in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I
love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That
music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I
grant I never saw my goddess go;
My
mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground;
And
yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As
any she belied with false compare.

Teacher: Let’s continue our
discussion. The questions to you are:
-
Can
there be love from the first sight?
-
What
do you think of jealousy: does it kill love or on the contrary causes it’s
development?
Thank you. Now let’s remember poems of some other great poets.
A RED ROSE
By Robert Burns
O my Love's like a red,
red rose,
That newly sprung in
June;
O my Love's like a melody
That sweetly played in
tune. -
As fair are you, my bonie
lass,
So deep in love am I;
And I will love you still
my Dear,
Till all the seas gang
dry. -
Till all the seas gang
dry, my Dear,
And the rocks melt with
the sun;
I will love you still, my
Dear,
While the sands of life
shall run. -
And fair you weel, my
only Love!
And fair you weel, a
while!
And I will come again, my
Love,
Though it were ten
thousand mile!
REMEMBER
By
Christina Rossetti (1830 - 1894)
Remember
me when I am gone away,
Gone
far away into the silent land;
When
you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor
I half turn to go, yet turning stay.
Remember
me when no more day by day
You
tell me of our future that you planned;
Only
remember me; you understand
It
will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet
if you should forget me for a while
And
afterwards remember, do not grieve;
For
if the darkness and corruption leave
A
vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better
by far you should forget and smile
Than
that you should remember and be sad.
(Conrad Potter Aiken , 1889-1973)
All lovely things
will have an ending,
All lovely things
will fade and die,
And youth, that's
now so bravely spending,
Will beg a penny
by and by.
Fine ladies soon
are all forgotten,
And goldenrod is
dust when dead,
The sweetest flesh
and flowers are rotten
And cobwebs tent
the brightest head.
Come back, true
love! Sweet youth, return!--
But time goes on,
and will, unheeding,
Though hands will
reach, and eyes will yearn,
And the wild days
set true hearts bleeding.
Come back, true
love! Sweet youth, remain!--
But goldenrod and
daisies wither,
And over them
blows autumn rain,
They pass; they pass, and know not
whither.
Teacher: Thank
you for your reciting poems. It was great. But I know that some of you have
prepared your own translation of poems. Let’s listen to them.
Teacher: People
often write letters to their beloved.
Here are some letters of famous people
Now Let’ try to read one unusual
letter.
The Love Letter
Once upon a time there lived a boy who loved a girl very much. But
the girl's father didn't like the boy and didn't want his daughter to meet him.
One day the boy decided to write the girl a love letter. He knew that the girl's
father would read it first so he used one simple trick. Here is his secret love
letter:
The great love that I have for you
is gone, and I find my dislike for you
grows every day. When I see you,
I do not even like your face;
the one thing that I want to do is to
look the other way. I never wanted to
marry you. Our last conversation
was very boring and hardly
made me look forward to seeing you again.
You think only of yourself.
If we were married, I know that I would find
life very difficult, and I would have no
pleasure in living with you. I have a heart
to give, but it is not a heart
I want to give to you. No one is more
foolish and selfish than you, and less
able to care for me and help me.
I sincerely want you to understand that
I speak the truth. You will do me a favour
if you think this is the end. Do not try
to send me an answer. Goodbye! Believe me
I do not care for you. Please do not think
I am still your loving friend.
When the letter arrived both the girl and her father were quite
happy. The girl knew that the boy still loved her and the father decided that
he had fallen out of love with his daughter. Can you guess why they
are so happy?
Teacher: Yes.
You are right. Read a love letter please.
Teacher: And now let’s
remember the most famous couples of all times.
Now let’s speak about the holiday of love, St Valentine’s
Day, and do some puzzles and tasks.
Teacher: Well
done. Thank you.
Teacher: Thank
you for your discussion and reciting poems. So we see now the power of love in
all times. And one more great way to express love is a song.
Our lesson is over. I
hope you’ve enjoyed it. Thank you for your active participation. I wish you to
love and to be loved.
