Medicines and Health

Medicines are not meant to live, an English proverb says. Yes, that's true and we may add that good health is better than the best medicine. If your health is good, you are always in a good mood. The profession of a doctor is one of the most noble, respected and needed in the worlds, as we turn to a doctor for advise at the hardest moments of our life, when we fall ill or suffer from pain. He takes our temperature and our pulse. He examines our heart, our lungs, our stomach or the part where we have pain, and tells us what the matter is with us. The doctor prescribes medicine, and gives us a prescription, which we take to the chemist's, who makes up the medicine. If you follow the doctor's orders, you get better; if you disobey the doctor, you may get worse, and even die. We must obey the doctor, if we want to get better.

What a pity we start to value our health only when it is necessary to take medicine. Taking medicine is an unpleasant thing of course, and if we want to avoid it, we should go in for sport and keeps ourselves fit. Physical exercises to my mind are necessary.

Now here in Russia health system incorporates a variety of medical institutions. The medical service in Russia is of two kinds. Some state establishments give their employees medical insurance cards. They guarantee the people free of charge medical assistance. Some medical establishments charge fees for treatment. They may be rather high, but our medical service now uses all modem equipment and medicines and provides qualified medical help to all people.

Healthy life style.

Nowadays our life is getting more and more tense. People live under the press of different problems, such as social, ecological, economic and others. They constantly suffer from stress, noise and dust in big cities, diseases and instability. A person should be strong and healthy in order to overcome all difficulties. To achieve this aim people ought to take care of their physical and mental health. There are several ways to do it. The state of your body depends on how much time you spend doing sports. At least everybody must do morning exercises every day. The most healthy kinds of sports are swimming, running and cycling.

Healthy food is also a very important factor. Overeating causes many dangerous diseases. The daily menu should include meat, fruit and vegetables, milk product, which are rich in vitamins, fat, proteins and etc. On the other hand modern diets are very popular especially among women. Diets may be harmful, if they are used in the wrong way.

To be healthy, people should get rid of their bad habits. It's necessary to stop smoking and drinking much. Everyone should remember that cigarettes, alcohol and drugs destroy both body and brain. Besides according to statistics most of crimes are committed by people under the influence of drugs and alcohol. In addition it is recommended to watch TV less, avoid anxiety and observe daily routine. Certainly it's hard to follow all these recommendations, but every person have to choose between healthy life style and numerous illnesses

Thirteen Healthy Habits

Some people believe that the number thirteen brings bad luck. But instead, today, the number thirteen is going to bring you health!

Healthy habit number one: eat breakfast every morning. Eating breakfast can help people feel better through the day. And, children who eat breakfast usually do better at school! A good breakfast includes fruits, vegetables, and grains.

Healthy habit number two: eat fish. The American Health Association suggests eating fish two times each week.

Healthy habit number three: sleep enough. Poor sleep quality can affect our memory and learning. Experts advise getting at least seven hours of sleep a night.

Healthy habit number four: make social connections. Spending time with other people can also improve help. An active mind is a healthy mind!

Healthy habit number five: exercise. Exercise is very important for good health. It helps control a person’s body weight. Exercising also helps grow healthy muscles, bones, and joints. It reduces the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes. Exercising reduces the risk of death from heart diseas. Exercise helps people to think and move better. It helps manage stress, improves emotions, and gives people lots of energy!

Healthy habit number six: care for your teeth. Research shows that taking care of your teeth can add over six years to your life! So remember to wash, brush and clean between your teeth!

Healthy habit number seven: have a hobby. A hobby is something that you enjoy doing. It could be running, reading or making something with your hands. Hobbies help people to relax and rest. Hobbies bring us joy.

Healthy habit number eight: protect your skin. The sun produces ultraviolet, or UV rays. These rays can harm our skin.

Healthy habit number nine: eat healthy between meals. Eating between meals is called snacking. Many people snack on unhealthy foods - foods that are high in sugar, salt or fat. Fruits and vegetables are a better choice. Remember an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Healthy habit number ten: drink water. Our bodies are made of mostly water. In fact, our bodies are sixty to seventy percent water! Water helps our bodies work right. Water helps to clear our bodies of harmful waste materials. Eight glasses of water a day does a body good!

Healthy habit number eleven: drink tea.

Healthy habit number twelve: take a walk every day.

Healthy habit number thirteen: have a plan. So, the best way to be healthy is to make a plan.

Цель: активизация и систематизация полученных знаний по теме HEALTHY LIFESTYLE


  1. Образовательная – формирование знаний по теме «Здоровый образ жизни»

  2. Развивающая - развивать способности к анализу, классификации и систематизации, догадке, способность осуществлять репродуктивные речевые действия, развитие ассоциативной памяти, внимания и быстрой реакции.

  1. Воспитательная - создание условий для формирования у обучающихся осознанного отношения к своему здоровью, образу жизни.

  2. Коммуникативная - совершенствование практических навыков владения лексикой по теме путем привлечения дополнительного материала, развитие навыков восприятия речи на слух и навыков чтения с целью основного и полного понимания прочитанного, развитие навыков аудирования и говорения, развитие ассоциативной памяти, внимания и быстрой реакции.

Речевой материал:

рецептивный: лексический –eating wholemeal bread, eating low-fat food, eating high – fibre food, physical inactivity.

продуктивный: лексический – drinking alcohol, smoking, dieting, sports, exercising.

грамматический – частота употребления действий (Frequency adverbs).

Ход урока

I. Подготовка учащихся к иноязычной речевой деятельности.

1.Оргмомент (1-2мин.)

Задача: проведение беседы с классом.

T.: - Good morning, my dear friends!

P.P.: - Good morning.

T.: - I am glad to see you today. I hope you are

fine and ready to work hard at the lesson, aren`t you?

P.P:-Yes, we are.

2. Речевая зарядка (2 мин.)

Задача: подготовить речь учащихся к уроку.

T.:- Listen and repeat after the speaker:

[t]-habit, too much, too little, eating too much, eating too little, activity, inactivity.

[d]-diet, deadly, die, drink-drinking.

[r]- drinking alcohol, breakfast, regular, regularity.

II. Работа с новым языковым материалом (15 мин.)

Задача: научить употреблять ЛЕ, используя речевую догадку и знания, полученные на предыдущих уроках.

T.: Look at the screen.(slide1) What is the topic of our lesson do you think?

P1.: - I think the topic of our lesson is the HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

T.: - That`s right! The well-known proverb says: “Health is better than wealth”. And I quite agree with it. Health is one of the most important things for a man. When a man is unhealthy, he lives joyless, unhappy, difficult life, visiting doctors, taking medicine. That`s why we must take care of our health from childhood. Today at the lesson we`ll speak about good and bad habits that a man can have, learn new words on the topic “Health”, practice to use adverbs, listen to the text, read about seven deadly health sins, make up a portrait of an average pupil in our class.

T.: Answer my questions: When do you usually get up?

P2.: -I get up at 7 o’clock.

T.: - Is it easy or difficult to you to get up early?

P3.: -It is difficult .

T.: - Do you do morning exercises?

P4 –Yes, I do

T.: - How many times a day do you clean teeth?

P5.: - I clean teeth 2 times a day.

T.: - Do you follow a diet?

P6.: - No, I do not.

T.: - Do you play sport games?

P7.: - Yes, I do. I play football.

III. Обучение видам речевой деятельности (15 мин.)

Задача: научить высказываться по теме, обсуждать прочитанное и услышанное.

T.: T.: Look at the screen (slide 4). What good and bad habits can people have?

P.8- People can have good and bad habits: drinking alcohol, smoking, dieting, sports, exercising.

T- Have a look at the table (slide 5) and make a list of good and bad habits. Work in groups. You may use a dictionary. Let`s check your results. Which habits are good and which are bad. Repeat after me: exercising, eating low-fat food, eating high- fibre food, eating whole-meal bread, dieting, keeping body clean, sports, environmental influence, physical inactivity, eating sweets, drinking alcohol, smoking. By the way, are you what you eat? (slide 6). Do Ex.1 on p.45 in your Activity Book to complete healthy eating tips and revise adverbs. Pay attention to the table.


T:- You are going to listen to the text called “Indoor pollution” and understand what the main sources of indoor pollution are.( аудирование)

a) What are the main sources of indoor pollution?

P1- The main sources of indoor pollution is carpet dust.

b) Does it influence our health?

P2.: -Yes, it does.

Take the list of paper on your desk. Listen to the text once more, put in the missing words and phrases. (письменная практика) (slide 8).

Физ. минутка( 2 мин.)

Are you tired, my dear friends? Let`s have a rest. Close your eyes, listen to the music and imagine yourself on the Black seashore. You are lying on the hot sand. The weather is fine. The sun is bright, waves are running one after another, they bring fresh air and cool drops on your body, face. Seagulls are flying over the beach; they pay no attention to people on the beach. You hear your favourite melody. How beautiful the life is! (pupils relax, listen to the music).

T:- Now you will read the text “Seven deadly health sins”. Compare your list of bad habits with those mentioned in the article. Pay attention to the words on the screen. (slide 9).

About what bad habits are written in the article?

P1- drinking alcohol, smoking

P2.: - physical inactivity

P3.: obesity

P4.: snacking, skipping breakfast

P5.: eating sweets

T:- Friends, let`s find out what habits your classmates have. Take lists of papers with tables on your desks, work in groups. (письменная практика)).

IV. Заключительный этап (5 мин.)

1. Подведение итога урока

Задача: показать уровень достижения цели.

T.: Today we have learned the vocabulary for good and bad habits, discussed them, made a portrait of an average student in our class. Now answer my question “What good habits would you like to have? (slide 10).”Start your sentences with the phrases:

I`d like…

I`d rather…

I`d prefer…

So we see that all pupils in our class want to live a healthy life and get rid of bad habits. I wish you all the best.

2. Домашнее задание

Задача: сообщить и объяснить домашнее задание.

T.: - Your home task: Write your own guide to healthy eating AB ex.22 p.45

3. Сообщение оценок

Задача: сообщить и аргументировать оценки.

Т.: - Your marks: P1, 5, 7 got excellent marks, because they gave full answers. P.2, 3, 4, 6 got a good marks, because there were some mistakes in their answers.

Т.: - Thank you very much for your active work. The lesson is over. Goodbye.
