Now
we are ready to start.
Monica:
Hi, Robert.
Robert:
Hey, Monica! It’s nice to see you.
Monica:
You missed school yesterday. Is anything wrong?
Robert:
No, not really. I just had some problems with my stomach, but I’m fine now.
Actually
it’s my dog, Toby, who I’m more worried about. Toby, say hello to
Monica.
Give her your paw… Give her your paw… Toby…
Monica:
Oh, Robert, he doesn’t want to. What’s up with him? He’s shivering all over and
can
hardly
stand on his legs.
Robert:
Yes. And his nose is dry and hot. It’s a sign he’s running a high temperature.
Monica:
Poor thing. You should take him to the vet.
Robert:
That’s where we are heading now. The bus should be along in 5-10 minutes.
Monica:
Visiting the vet is going to be stressful for him, isn’t it?
Robert:
I don’t think so. Toby knows the clinic quite well. In fact, that’s where we
met.
Monica:
What do you mean?
Robert:
I adopted him from there. Someone found him on the street when he was a little
puppy
and brought him to the vet clinic. He looked terrible when he arrived there.
Monica:
And?
Robert:
He was very hungry and exhausted but, fortunately, other than that quite
healthy.
The
person who’d brought him had no intention to adopt. I happened to be there at
that
time with a friend of mine and her dog...
Monica:
What happened next?
Robert:
The vet asked if there was anyone who wanted to take the puppy home. That’s
all.
Monica:
And you said yes? Wow – that was really kind of you. I’ve heard adopted animals
often
make better friends than expensive pets with pedigrees.
Robert:
Absolutely. Toby and I are best friends!
Monica:
It’s a pity he’s ill. I was going to invite you to a picnic in the afternoon.
My granny
has
cooked vegetarian pizzas and mum has bought lots of sausages for the barbecue.
Robert:
Oh, Monica, it’s tempting… But even if Toby was perfectly alright, I wouldn’t
be
able
to come anyway. I have to prepare for my maths test. It can’t be put off any
longer;
the test is tomorrow.
Monica:
I see. What a shame.
Robert:
It’s a double disappointment for me; I love barbecued sausages! They are always
so
spicy
and juicy.
Monica:
Yeah!
Robert:
But I’ll have to survive on cola and hamburgers and chips, at least till my mum
comes
home from work.
Monica:
Give her my best regards by the way. And my mum’s thanks too.
Robert:
What for?
Monica:
For her very good advice on how to get rid of the bugs on our roses. The nasty
little
insects
nearly ate up all the roses in our garden, but your mum’s advice soon stopped
them.
Robert:
Yeah, mum has “green fingers” for sure – she’s very good at gardening. It’s a
pity
her
job doesn’t leave her much time for her hobby.
Monica:
Does she still work for the Central Hospital?
Robert:
Yes. She treats patients for infectious diseases.
Monica:
Wow. That sounds difficult… and stressful.
Robert:
Yeah, but she’s not the kind of person to be round the house all the time. Her
career
means
a lot to her.
Monica:
Like to most people. I’m considering becoming a reporter… to interview
politicians
and
celebrities, that sort of thing.
Robert:
Hmmm, sounds a bit boring to me. I’ve always wanted to be a professional
footballer.
Monica:
Ha! Well, I know you are a very good player, but being an athlete is not a
long-term
career.
You simply can’t do it after a certain age.
Robert:
I disagree. Once they get too old to play, sportsmen often become coaches.
That’s
not a
bad career, is it?

Next
year I’m going to a language school in Australia. My English course will last
for two
months
and I have to make a difficult decision about where to stay there. The language
school
offers
two options – their students either stay with host families, or in their youth
hostel.
On the
one hand, staying with a family looks very convenient. I don’t have to worry
about
my
meals as I’m supposed to have breakfast and dinner together with the members of
the family.
I’m
not good at cooking, so this is a good reason for me to choose host-family
accommodation.
Another
argument for staying with a family is the comfort they provide. According to
the school
contract,
their student has a single room with furniture, which means I will have my own
space and
privacy.
As for
the youth hostel, I’ve seen the photos of it and I think staying there is not
bad either.
There
are no individual rooms – every room is shared by several students. Having one,
two or even
three
roommates could give me some new life experience. If we all get along well, it
will be great.
We
could have fun together and we would help each other with our homework. If you
have
roommates
who do not speak your language, it becomes a very strong motivation for
speaking
English,
doesn’t it? I’ve heard that the school managers often put students from
different countries
in one
room, which is a good trick to make them speak English not only in the
classroom, but at
home
too. I guess when people live together they have to talk and solve all kinds of
everyday
situations.
When they don’t know each other’s languages, they very soon figure it out that
communication
is only possible in English and they have loads of language practice, whether
they
like it
or not!
However,
this situation is not risk-free. It may be very difficult for students with
different
backgrounds
and cultural values to share one room. Their habits and behavioral norms may
differ so
much
that sometimes it leads to serious misunderstanding between them. Students may
even end up
quarreling.
Fortunately, most students are sensible enough to inform the manager about
problems
before
they get too serious and the manager solves it quickly and professionally.
7.
When
young people study abroad, they usually stay either with a host family or in a
youth hostel. Both types of _______________have their advantages and
disadvantages.
8.
If
you stay with a host family, you enjoy the comfort of having a furnished
___________ of your own.
9.
You
also have _____________ with the family; at least breakfast and dinner. If you
stay in a youth hostel, you have to cook for yourself.
10.
In
a hostel, most rooms are offered on a shared basis, that is, there may be two,
three or even four students in one room. Sharing a room can be fun, and it is a
great _______________to speak English.
11.
The
language school managers often purposely put students from different countries
in one room so that English becomes the only means of ______________ for them.
12.
However,
this trick can go wrong. When people from different cultures become roommates,
it may cause ______________and even quarreling.

When
we are young, our parents always tell us: “Your priority is education.
Education gives
you a
good start in life. You need to focus on learning because it’s crucial for your
future.” All this
is
true, education is important, but does this mean that when we graduate from
college, we can
forget
about learning?
Definitely
not! Fifty or sixty years ago, the education a student got in the college was
everything
he needed for the rest of his career, but it doesn’t work like this anymore. If
you want
a
successful career today, you have to upgrade your skills regularly. Today’s
trend is lifelong
learning,
and the number of people who consider themselves lifelong learners is rising
rapidly.
Managing
your own learning process is not easy - you have to understand what you need to
learn,
find time and motivate yourself, but it is worth the effort. Sometimes
self-learning is even
more
fruitful than formal education. Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, for example, ran
their huge
corporations
without any formal education in business. They learnt all the necessary
business skills
by
themselves. Another great example is Theodore Roosevelt. He found the skill of
speed reading
very useful
and read thousands of books. Scientists and people of art were equally
impressed by
Roosevelt’s
knowledge as he was well informed in different fields and could maintain
a
professional conversation about anything from the most complicated scientific theories,
to the
latest
best-selling books. No doubt this ability to be interesting to people was the
basis for his career
as a
successful politician.
Apart
from making you an interesting and charismatic person, lifelong learning helps
you
live
longer and keeps your brain healthy. Henry Ford said, “Anyone who stops
learning is old,
whether
at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.”
Recent
research in the aging process confirms this point. According to their results,
scientists
believe elderly people who learn languages or new skills are several times less
likely to
develop
diseases and can stay active much longer.
7. Our life is
changing rapidly. In the past, you could finish _____________ and forget about
leaning forever. Nowadays, people have to keep learning if they want keep their
jobs.
8. As soon as you
stop learning new things, you put your ______________ at risk.
9. Lifetime learners
choose what they need to learn as they go and manage to achieve amazing
results. Henry Ford, for example, never studied _______________at university,
but successfully created a huge corporation.
10. Theodore Roosevelt
had great ______________in different areas.
11. He easily took
part in conversations on any topic from art to science. It made him an
extremely popular person and provided the _____________for his political
career.
12. Learning is also
good from a medical point of view – it makes your _________________exercise and
it can work longer. The results of research prove that your body remains
healthier too.
