Education
in Russia
Every citizen of our country has the right to education. This right is guaranteed by the Constitution. It is not only a right but a duty, too. Every boy or girl must get secondary education. They go to school at the age of six or
seven and must stay there until they are 14-17 years old. At school pupils
study academic
subjects, such as
Russian, Literature, Mathematics, History, Biology, a foreign language and
others.
After finishing 9 forms of a secondary school young people
can continue
their education in
the 10th and the 11th form. They can also go to a vocational or technical school, where they study academic subjects
and receive a
profession. A
college gives
general knowledge in academic
subjects and a
profound knowledge in one
or several subjects.
After finishing a secondary, vocational,
technical school or a college, young people can start working or enter an institute or a university. Institutes and universities train specialists in different fields. A course at an institute or a university usually
takes 5 years. Many universities have evening and extramural departments. They give their students an opportunity to study without leaving their jobs. Institutes and universities usually
have postgraduate
courses which give candidate or doctoral degrees.
Education in this country is free at most schools. There are
some private
primary and
secondary schools where pupils have to pay for their
studies. Students of institutes and universities get scholarships. At many institutes and universities
there are also departments where students have to pay for their education.

- I am Charles Atkinson from Telecom Systems. How do you do!
- How do you do! Thank you for coming to meet me. Have I kept you
waiting?
- Not at all. Your plane has arrived according to the timetable.
Did you have a good flight?
- Yes, thank you. The trip was quite long and I was a bit airsick
but I’m OK now.
- Oh, you might be exhausted... Sorry, I completely forgot to
introduce you Phillip Mason, our sales manager.
- Pleased to meet you, Mr. Mason. So where shall we go now?
- My idea is to go to the office from here first and have lunch
there. It will take us about 40 minutes to get to the place.
- It sounds good. Is Mr. Jackson waiting for us there?
- Certainly. We are going to discuss the details of our future
partnership after lunch.
- Is the hotel far from your office?
- No. We reserved a single room in a good hotel just round the
corner.
- Thank you very much. I really appreciate it.
- No problem, Mr. Hitchcock. So, shall we go then? Our car is just
outside the airport. Let me take one of your bags, please.

Professions and
Careers
Since
we all are human and always tend to develop, in order to be useful and
successful personality, the main question we ask ourselves after finishing
school is: which profession should I choose? Who do I want to be? Normally
we choose the one that brings more money and success and is considered a decent
and popular profession in the society and presupposes the future career growth.
But the more correct approach would be: what do I do best of all? What do I
want most of all to be?
Indeed it is a hard choice,
but still very important. Let’s take an overview to the most large and popular
profession areas that young people consider while choosing a profession.
Health
Care. The growing necessity in the health care are can be explained by
constantly growing population number and peoples’ average age – people are
living longer so the increasing number of elderly people demands more health
care services. Consequently the more working, administrative roles should be
filled.
Computer
science. The technological progress and integration of digital
communications and IT services have created bigger necessity of specialists in
this area, including private and public sectors. So the computer science became
more and more popular in the last 15 years, so right now more and more people
choose this direction after graduating the high school. Computer programmers,
web designers and developers, system administrators have many job offers and
are quite successful in their careers.
Teaching is
one more popular profession, being respected and interesting in the modern
society. Teaching includes many other sciences as psychology, sociology,
philology, philosophy, logics, etc. Indeed it is obviously a big area of
investigation and research and development, so many young men and women choose
it without hesitation.

Environmental Protection
Our planet Earth is only a tiny part of
the universe, and it is so far the only place where human beings can live.
We always polluted our surroundings. But until now pollution was not such
a huge problem. People lived in the countryside and couldn’t produce such
amount of pollution that would lead to a dangerous situation on a global scale.
With the development of industrial cities, which create huge amounts of
pollutants, the problem has become real. Nowadays our planet is in serious
danger. Global warming, acid rains, air and water pollution, overpopulation are
the problems that threaten human lives on the Earth.
Every year world industry pollutes the air that we breathe with. A great number
of cities suffer from smog. Rainforests are cut down. Their disappearance
upsets the oxygen balance. As a result, some rare species of animals, birds,
fish and plants are extinct. A lot of seas, rivers and lakes are filled with
poison like industrial and nuclear wastes, chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
The pollution of air and the world's ocean, destruction of the ozone layer is
the result of man's careless interaction with nature, a sign of the ecological
crisis.
People should consider their attitude to the environment. Some progress has
already been made in this direction. Numerous conferences have been held by a
lot of agencies to discuss problems facing ecologically poor regions including
the Aral Sea, the South Urals, Kuzbass, Donbass and Chernobyl. Greenpeace is
also doing much to preserve the environment.

Natural disasters
Mother Nature can act rather scary sometimes. Almost every day TV
channels, radio and newspapers report on natural disasters striking different
parts of the world. Scientists say that earthquakes, tornados, floods,
droughts, tsunamis, landslides and hurricanes are happening more frequently
nowadays. Global warming, pollution and growing industrialization lead to
imbalance in our echo-system.
A natural disaster can be defined as an uncontrollable extreme
disruption which causes ecological and financial damage and victims of
vulnerable population. Sometimes the events can be predicted by special
meteorological warning systems and they often happen in the same geographical
area because they are related to climate and physical characteristics of the
region. For example, Florida is constantly suffering from tornadoes and
hurricanes, and Japan – from earthquakes.
An earthquake happens when tectonic plates of the earth move and
they make the area shake violently. According to the Richter scale the
magnitude of earthquakes is measured from 1 to 10 points. The most powerful
earthquake was recorded in 1960 in Chile, its magnitude was 9.5.
Volcanic eruptions occur when hot red magma erupts from the
earth’s crust and flows from the top of the volcano. It also throws volcano
ashes into the air which are harmful to inhale for human beings and animals.
A tsunami is a series of dangerous huge ocean waves, usually
caused by underwater earthquakes. This natural disaster attacks the shore all
of a sudden and often results in thousands of deaths. The height of the waves
can reach 30 metres.
Flooding is another natural disaster. Floods happen when the water
level in rivers and seas becomes too high. Sometimes flash floods can even wash
away whole villages.
During extremely hot dry summers our world usually suffers from
vast forest fires and severe droughts. Wildfires are especially dangerous in
windy weather when they spread very easily. Droughts may result in famine
because the land becomes dry and people can’t grow any plants and vegetables on
it.
A tornado is an enormous column of twisting wind that moves very
fast and destroys houses, raises in the air and throws people, animals and
heavy things. Hurricanes and tornados are very common in America and the Atlantic
Ocean.
Landslides happen when earth and rocks on slopes become loose or
water-laden and they fall down the hills or mountains.
People face great problems after disasters: the water is usually
infected, the communication lines (electricity, telephone) are often damaged,
most of the buildings and property are destroyed, agricultural crops are also
damaged. Natural disasters are great tragedies to many countries and nations.
They take a lot of people’s lives. Thousands of people become homeless,
unemployed. They need medical and psychological help.

Although the average citizen is usually annoyed by all the
advertisements printed in newspapers and magazines and the commercials
broadcast on TV, the impact of the whole advertising industry on a single
person is immense and plays a very important role in our lives. Advertising
absorbs vast sums of money but it is useful to the community. What are the
functions of advertisements?
The first one to mention is to inform. A lot of the information
people have about household devices, cars, building materials, electronic
equipment, cosmetics, detergents and food is largely derived from the
advertisements they read. Advertisements introduce them to new products or
remind them of the existing ones.
The second function is to sell. The products are shown from the
best point of view and the potential buyer, on having entered the store,
unconsciously chooses the advertised products. One buys this washing powder or
this chewing gum, because the colorful TV commercials convince him of the best
qualities of the product. Even cigarettes or sweets or alcohol are associated
with the good values of human life such as joy, freedom, love and happiness,
and just those associations make a person choose the advertised products. The
aim of a good advertisement is to create a consumer demand to buy the
advertised product or service. Children are good example as they usually want
the particular kind of chocolate or toy or chewing-gum. Being naive they cannot
evaluate objectively what is truthful and what is exaggerated and select the
really good products unless they buy the goods and check for themselves.
Thirdly, since the majority of advertisements are printed in our
press we pay less for newspapers and magazines, also TV in most countries in
cheap. The public advertising seen on street hoardings, railway stations and
buildings makes people's life more joyful. Moreover, all those small ads in the
press concerning "employment", "education" and "For
sale and wanted" columns, help ordinary people to find a better job or a
better employee, to sell or to buy their second-hand things and find services,
or learn about educational facilities, social events such as, concerts, theatre
plays, football matches, and to announce births, marriages and deaths.
Thus despite our dissatisfaction when being bombarded by all the
advertisers' information we must admit that they do perform a useful service to
society, and advertisements are an essential part of our everyday life.

English
literature
English literature was always represented by outstanding writers
and poets. Great Britain is a place of birth of William Shakespeare, John
Milton, Charles Dickens, Geoffrey Chaucer, William Somereset Maugham and many
other famous and extremely talented authors.
William Shakespeare contributed to the development not only of
English but also of world literature. He is usually called a national poet of
England. The complete edition of his works was translated into 70 languages,
and different plays and poems into more than 200 languages.
If Shakespeare wrote mainly tragedies, Charles Dickens created
splendid realistic novels during the Victorian era. Dickens started his career
as a journalist and then turned to literature and produced many works in which
he demonstrated the evils of society.
William Somerset Maugham, in his turn, was one of the most
successful writers of 1930s. He created such novels as “Theatre”, “Cakes and
Ale”, and “The Razor’s Edge”. Maugham was also good at writing short stories
and plays and he instituted the Somerset Maugham Award which was given to the
best young British authors.
These and many other British writers made an impact on British
literature and literature in general. They produced unique writings which
achieved success many years ago and are still admired and read by millions of
people all over the world.
