The sick rose

O rose, thou art sick (ты больна)!

The invisible worm (невидимый червь)

That flies (который летает) in the night (ночью),

In the howling (в воющей, завывающей, ревящей) storm (буре, грозе),

Has found out (нашел, выискал, обнаружил) thy bed (твое ложе)

Of crimson (темно-красной, малиновой) joy (радости, отрады),

And his dark (его темная) secret love (тайная любовь)

Does thy life (твою жизнь) destroy (разрушает).

The sick rose

O rose, thou art sick!

The invisible worm

That flies in the night,

In the howling storm,

Has found out thy bed

Of crimson joy,

And his dark secret love

Does thy life destroy.

The Tyger

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright (горящий ярко)
In the forests of the night
What immortal hand or eye
Could (смогли) frame (создать, придать форму, слепить) thy  fearful (твою страшную, наводящую страх) symmetry (симметрию)?

In what (в каких, чьих) distant (далеких, отдаленных) deeps (глубинах) or skies (или небесах)
Burnt the fire (горел огонь) of thine eyes (твоих глаз)?
On what wings (на каких, чьих крыльях) dare he (осмеливается он) aspire (устремиться, устремляться)?
What the hand (какая, чья рука) dare seize (смеет схватить) the fire?

And what shoulder (какое, чье плечо = сила руки), and what art (искусство, умение),
Could twist (скрутить, сплести) the sinews of thy heart (сухожилия твоего сердца)?
And when (когда) thy heart began (начало) to beat (биться),
What dread hand (чья, что за страшная рука)? and what dread feet (ноги)?

What the hammer (молот)? what the chain (цепь)?
In what furnace (в какой, чьей печи) was thy brain (был твой мозг)?
What the anvil (наковальня)? what dread grasp (схватывание, хватка; [gra:sp])
Dare its deadly (смертельные, грозящие смертью) terrors (ужасы = страшные свойства) clasp (сжимать; [kla:sp])?

When the stars (звезды) threw (бросили, сбросили: throw) down (вниз) their spears (свои копья),
And water'd (увлажнили) heaven (небо) with their tears (своими слезами),
Did he smile (улыбнулся ли он) his work to see (свое творение увидев)?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

The bells of St. Petersburgh

Those evening bells (те вечерние колокола)! those evening bells!

How many (как много) a tale (рассказов, сказаний, историй) their music tells (их музыка говорит, рассказывает),

Of youth (о юности), and home (/родном/ доме), and that sweet time (о том сладостном времени),

When last (когда в последний раз) I heard (я слышал) their soothing (их успокаивающий, утешающий, смягчающий /боль, тревогу/) chime (перезвон колоколов).

Those joyous hours (те радостные часы) are pass'd (прошли мимо) away (прочь) = (прошли);

And many a heart (много сердец, не одно сердце), that then (которое тогда) was gay (было весело),

Within (внутри) the tomb (гробницы) now (теперь) darkly (темно, мрачно) dwells (обитает, пребывает),

And hears no more (не слышит больше) those evening bells.

And so 't will be (и так это будет) when I am gone (когда я уйду = умру);

That tuneful (мелодичный) peal (звон, раскат) will still (будет все еще, по-прежнему) ring on (продолжать звенеть),

While (в то время как) other bards (другие барды) shall walk (будут идти, бродить) these dells (по этим лесистым долинам),

And sing (петь) your praise (вашу хвалу = вам хвалу), sweet evening bells!

The bells of St. Petersburgh

Those evening bells! those evening bells!

How many a tale their music tells,

Of youth, and home, and that sweet time,

When last I heard their soothing chime.

Those joyous hours are pass'd away;

And many a heart, that then was gay,

Within the tomb now darkly dwells,

And hears no more those evening bells.

And so 't will be when I am gone;

That tuneful peal will still ring on,

While other bards shall walk these dells,

And sing your praise, sweet evening bells!

How dear to me the hour when daylight dies

How dear (как дорог) to me (мне) the hour (час) when (когда) daylight (дневной свет) dies (умирает),

   And sunbeams (солнечные лучи) melt (тают) along (вперед, по всей линии; вдоль) the silent sea (безмолвного моря),

For (потому что) then (тогда) sweet dreams (сладкие мечты; сновидения) of other days (других дней) arise (встают),

   And memory (память) breathes (дышит, навевает) her vesper sigh (свой вечерний вздох) to thee (тебе).

And, as I watch (когда я смотрю на) the line of light, (линию света) that plays (которая играет)

   Along the smooth wave (по гладкой, плавной волне) toward (по направлению к) the burning west (горящему западу),

I long (я страстно желаю, тоскую по, стремлюсь) to tread (ступить на, идти по) that golden path (этой золотой тропе)of rays (/из/ лучей),

   And think (думать) 't (что она) would lead (приведет) to some (к какому-нибудь) bright (светлому, яркому) isle (острову; [ail]) of rest (покоя).

How dear to me the hour when daylight dies

How dear to me the hour when daylight dies,

   And sunbeams melt along the silent sea,

For then sweet dreams of other days arise,

   And memory breathes her vesper sigh to thee.

And, as I watch the line of light, that plays

   Along the smooth wave toward the burning west,

I long to tread that golden path of rays,

   And think 't would lead to some bright isle of rest.

Come, rest in this bosom, my own stricken deer

Come (приди), rest (отдохни) in this bosom (на этой груди; [buzm]), my own (мой собственный = /дорогой/ мой) stricken (пораженный /оружием, болезнью/ - to strike, раненый) deer (олень),

Tho' (хотя = though) the herd (стадо) have fled (убежало; to flee) from thee (от тебя), thy home (твой дом) is still here (всё еще здесь):

Here still is (здесь всё еще) the smile (улыбка), that no cloud can (которую никакое облако не может) o'ercast (затемнить, покрыть /облаком/; to overcast),

And a heart (сердце) and a hand (рука) all (все, целиком) thy own (твои собственные = принадлежат тебе) to the last (до последнего).

Oh! what was love made for (для чего была создана любовь), if't is (если она) not the same (не та же самая, не одинакова)

Thro' joy (через, сквозь радость = through) and thro' torment (мучение), thro' glory (славу) and shame (стыд, позор)?

I know not (я не знаю), I ask not (не спрашиваю), if guilt's (есть ли вина) in that heart (в том сердце),

I but know (я только, лишь знаю) that I love thee (что люблю тебя), whatever thou art (кем бы, какой бы ты ни была).

Thou hast called me (ты называла меня) thy Angel (твоим ангелом) in moments of bliss (в мгновения блаженства),

And thy Angel I'll be (я буду), mid (посреди) the horrors (ужасов) of this (/всего/ этого), -

Thro' the furnace (через горнило, печь; [f∂:nıs]), unshrinking (непоколебимо, неустрашимо; to shrink – сокращаться, сморщиваться; избегать), thy steps (твоим шагам) to pursue (следовать),

And shield (защищать: „заслонять щитом“) thee (тебя), and save (спасти) thee, - or perish (или погибнуть) there (здесь) too (тоже)!

Come, rest in this bosom, my own stricken deer

Come, rest in this bosom, my own stricken deer,

Tho' the herd have fled from thee, thy home is still here:

Here still is the smile, that no cloud can o'ercast,

And a heart and a hand all thy own to the last.

Oh! what was love made for, if't is not the same

Thro' joy and thro' torment, thro' glory and shame?

I know not, I ask not, if guilt's in that heart,

I but know that I love thee, whatever thou art.

Thou hast called me thy Angel in moments of bliss,

And thy Angel I'll be, mid the horrors of this, -

Thro' the furnace, unshrinking, thy steps to pursue,

And shield thee, and save thee, - or perish there too!

Thomas Moore

At the mid hour of night …

At the mid hour of night (в полночь: „в срединном часу ночи“), when stars are weeping (когда звезды плачут), I fly (я лечу)

To the lone vale (к уединенной долине) we loved (/которую/ мы любили), when life (когда жизнь) shone warm (светила тепло) in thine eye (в твоих глазах, в твоем взгляде);

   And I think oft (и я думаю часто), if (если) spirits (духи) can (могут) steal (прокрасться = уйти украдкой) from the regions of air (из воздушных областей: „из областей воздуха“)

   To revisit (чтобы посетить вновь) past (прошлые) scenes (места /где что-либо происходит/) of delight (наслаждения), thou wilt come (ты придешь) to me (ко мне) there (там),

And tell me (и скажешь мне) our love (/что/ наша любовь) is remember'd (помнится, не забыта) even (даже) in the sky (на небе, небесах).

Then (тогда) I sing (я спою) the wild song (дикую, безудержную песню) it once (которую однажды, некогда) was rapture (было восторгом) to hear (слышать),

When our voices (когда наши голоса) commingling (смешиваясь) breathed (дышали, веяли), like one (как один = как единый голос), on the ear (/веяли/ на слух);

   And as (и в то время как) Echo (эхо) far off (далеко-далеко) through the vale (через дол) my sad (мою грустную) orison (молитву = мольбу; [o:ris∂n]) rolls (катит, прокатывает, раскатывает),

  I think, oh my love 't is thy voice (/что/ это твой голос) from the Kingdom of Souls (из царства духов, душ)

Faintly (слабо, едва: to faint - терять сознание, падать в обморок) answering (отвечающий) still (все еще) the notes (музыкальным звукам) that (которые) once (когда-то) were so dear (были так дороги).

At the mid hour of night …

At the mid hour of night, when stars are weeping, I fly

To the lone vale we loved, when life shone warm in thine eye;

  And I think oft, if spirits can steal from the regions of air

  To revisit past scenes of delight, thou wilt come to me there,

And tell me our love is remember'd even in the sky.

Then I sing the wild song it once was rapture to hear,

When our voices commingling breathed, like one, on the ear;

  And as Echo far off through the vale my sad orison rolls,

  I think, oh my love! 't is thy voice from the Kingdom of Souls

Faintly answering still the notes that once were so dear.

Sun of the sleepless

Sun of the sleepless (солнце бессонных)! melancholy star (меланхолическое, грустное светило)!

Whose (чей) tearful (полный слез, печальный) beam (луч, сияние) glows (светит закатным заревом, остывающим накалом) tremulously (дрожаще, с трепетанием, робко, неровно) far (далеко) = (робко, неровно подрагивает вдали),

That show'st (/ты/, что показываешь) the darkness (тьму) thou canst not dispel (которую ты не можешь разогнать, рассеять),

How like art thou (как ты похоже) to joy (на радость) remember'd well (которая хорошо помнится)!

So gleams (так мерцает, светит слабым отблеском) the past (прошлое), the light (свет) of other days (других = прошлых дней),

Which shines (который светит), but warms not (но не греет) with its powerless rays (своими бессильными лучами);

A night-beam (ночной луч) Sorrow (/который/ скорбь, сожаление) watcheth (ждет) to behold (чтобы созерцать, наблюдать, брать на заметку = и видна /скорбь/)

      Distinct (четкий, отчетливый /свет/), but distant (но далекий, удаленный) - clear (ясный) - but oh, how cold (какой холодный)!

Sun of the sleepless

Sun of the sleepless! melancholy star!

Whose tearful beam glows tremulously far,

That show'st the darkness thou canst not dispel,

How like art thou to joy remember'd well!

So gleams the past, the light of other days,

Which shines, but warms not with its powerless rays;

A night-beam Sorrow watcheth to behold,

      Distinct, but distant - clear - but oh, how cold!

George Gordon Byron

My soul is dark

My soul is dark (моя душа темна) – Oh! quickly string (быстро натяни струны)

The harp (на арфу) I yet can (которую я еще могу) brook (терпеть, выносить; [bruk]) to hear (слышать, слушать);

And let (и пусть: „пусти“) thy gentle fingers (твои нежные пальцы) fling (бросают /быстрыми движениями/)

Its (ее - арфы) melting („тающие“, мягкие, нежные) murmurs (журчащие, шелестящие звуки) o'er mine ear (на мое „ухо“ = слух).

If in this heart (если в этом сердце) a hope be dear (была бы дорога надежда, нашлась бы надежда),

That sound (тот звук) shall (должен) charm it forth (выманить ее чарами, заклинаниями наружу; to charm очаровывать) again (снова):

If in these eyes there (если вот в этих глазах) lurk (таится, скрывается) a tear (слеза),

'Twill flow (она потечет, польется), and cease to burn (перестанет жечь) my brain (мой мозг).

But bid (прикажи, попроси) the strain (напеву, мелодии: „натяжению“) be wild (быть диким, непокорным) and deep (глубоким),

Nor (а также не) let thy notes of joy (дай нотам радости) be first (быть первыми);

I tell thee (я говорю тебе), minstrel (менестрель, поэт-певец), I must weep (я должен плакать),

Or else (или иначе) this heavy heart (это тяжелое сердце) will burst (разорвется: „лопнет“);

For (потому что) it hath been (оно было) by sorrow nursed (скорбью вскормлено),

And ached (болело) in sleepless silence (в бессонном безмолвии) long (долго);

And now 'tis (теперь оно) doom'd (осуждено, обречено судьбой) to know the worst (знать самое худшее),

And break (разорваться: „сломаться“) at once (сразу же, тут же) – or yield (или сдаться, поддаться, уступить права, подчиниться) to song (песне).

My soul is dark

My soul is dark – Oh! quickly string

The harp I yet can brook to hear;

And let thy gentle fingers fling

Its melting murmurs o'er mine ear.

If in this heart a hope be dear,

That sound shall charm it forth again:

If in these eyes there lurk a tear,

'Twill flow, and cease to burn my brain.

But bid the strain be wild and deep,

Nor let thy notes of joy be first;

I tell thee, minstrel, I must weep,

Or else this heavy heart will burst;

For it hath been by sorrow nursed,

And ached in sleepless silence long;

And now 'tis doom'd to know the worst,

And break at once – or yield to song.

Journal in Cephalonia

The dead (мертвые, мертвецы) have been awakened (были разбужены, пробуждены) - shall I sleep (а я должен/буду спать)?

   The World's (мир) at war (в состоянии войны) with tyrants (с тиранами) - shall I crouch (припасть к земле от страха; пресмыкаться, раболепствовать)?

The harvest's ripe (урожай созрел: „созревший“) - and shall I pause (остановиться, медлить) to reap (жать, снимать урожай)?

   I slumber not (я не дремлю); the thorn (шип, колючка) is in my Couch (в моем ложе);

Each day (каждый день) a trumpet soundeth (труба звучит) in mine ear (в моем слухе),

   Its echo (она откликается эхом; ['ekou]) in my heart (в моем сердце) -

The Old Familiar Faces

I have had (у меня были: „я имел“) playmates (друзья детства, товарищи детских игр), I have had companions (товарищи, спутники),

In my days (в мои дни) of childhood (детства) = (в дни моего детства), in my joyful school-days (в мои радостные школьные дни)

All, all (все) are gone, the old familiar faces.

I have been laughing (я смеялся: „был смеющимся“), I have been carousing (кутил; [k∂’rauz]),

Drinking (пил) late (поздно, допоздна), sitting late (сидел допоздна /с друзьями, с гостями/, with my (с моими) bosom (закадычными: „грудь“) cronies (дружками)

All, all are gone, the old familiar faces.

I loved (я любил) a Love (любовь = возлюбленную) once (однажды, некогда), fairest (прекраснейшую) among women (среди женщин):

Closed (закрыты) are her doors (ее двери) on me (за мной) = (захлопнулась за мной ее дверь), I must not (я не должен) see her (видеть ее)

All, all are gone, the old familiar faces.

I have a friend (у меня есть друг), a kinder (более сердечного, доброго) friend has no man (нет ни у кого):

Like (как, подобно) an ingrate (неблагодарному человеку), I left (оставил, покинул; to leave) my friend abruptly (резко, неожиданно);

Left him, to muse (/чтобы/ размышлять, задумчиво смотреть) on the old familiar faces.

Ghost-like (духу подобно, привидению подобный) I paced (шагал, расхаживал) round (вокруг) = (обходил, бродил по) the haunts (часто посещаемым, излюбленным местам) of my childhood (моего детства),

Earth seem'd a desert (земля казалась пустыней) I was (/которую/ я был) bound (вынужден, обязан: „связан“) to traverse (пересечь),

Seeking (стремясь: „ища“) to find (найти, отыскать) the old familiar faces.

Friend of my bosom е. лелеемый у меня на груди“), thou more (ты, /который/ больше) than a brother (чем брат),

Why wert not thou (почему же не ты был) born (рожден) in my father's (в моего отца) dwelling (жилище)?

So might we (тогда: „так“ мы могли бы) talk of (беседовать о) the old familiar faces –

How some they (/о том,/ как некоторые из них) have died (умерли), and some they have left me (покинули меня),

And some are taken (были взяты, забраны) from me (от меня) = (забраны у меня); all are departed (все удалились)

All, all are gone, the old familiar faces.

The Old Familiar Faces

I have had playmates, I have had companions,

In my days of childhood, in my joyful school-days –

All, all are gone, the old familiar faces.

I have been laughing, I have been carousing,

Drinking late, sitting late, with my bosom cronies –

All, all are gone, the old familiar faces.

I loved a Love once, fairest among women:

Closed are her doors on me, I must not see her –

All, all are gone, the old familiar faces.

I have a friend, a kinder friend has no man:

Like an ingrate, I left my friend abruptly;

Left him, to muse on the old familiar faces.

Ghost-like I paced round the haunts of my childhood,

Earth seem'd a desert I was bound to traverse,

Seeking to find the old familiar faces.

Friend of my bosom, thou more than a brother,

Why wert not thou born in my father's dwelling?

So might we talk of the old familiar faces –

How some they have died, and some they have left me,

And some are taken from me; all are departed –

All, all are gone, the old familiar faces.

Charles Lamb.

The new house

Now (сейчас) first (сперва, сначала) = (сразу же, как только), as I shut the door (когда я затворил дверь),

   I was alone (я был = оказался один)

In the new house (в новом доме); and the wind (и ветер)

   Began (начал: begin) to moan (стонать, жаловаться).

Old (старым) at once (вдруг, тут же) was the house (стал дом),

   And I was old;

My ears (мои уши) were teased (дразнились, „были дразнены“ = их дразнили, им надоедали) with the dread (страхом, боязнью)

   Of what was foretold (того, что было предсказано: foretell);

Nights of storm (ночи бури, грозы = грозовые ночи), days of mist (дни дымки, мглы, измороси, тумана перед глазами), without end (без конца = бесконечные);

   Sad (грустные) days when (когда) the sun (солнце)

Shone (светило; shine) in vain (понапрасну, зря): old griefs (старые горести, беды) and griefs

   Not yet begun (еще не начавшиеся; to begin).

All was foretold me

   Could I foresee (не мог я предвидеть заранее);

But I learnt (но я узнал: „научился“ знать) how the wind (как ветер) would sound (зазвучит: „зазвучал бы = зазвучит, пожалуй“)

   After (после того как) these things (все эти вещи) should be (произойдут: „пожалуй, случатся, уже произошли бы“).

The new house

Now first, as I shut the door,

   I was alone

In the new house; and the wind

   Began to moan.

Old at once was the house,

   And I was old;

My ears were teased with the dread

   Of what was foretold;

Nights of storm, days of mist, without end;

   Sad days when the sun

Shone in vain: old griefs and griefs

   Not yet begun.

All was foretold me; naught

   Could I foresee;

But I learnt how the wind would sound

   After these things should be.

THIS LIVING HAND

This living hand, now warm and capable

Of earnest grasping, would, if it were cold

And in the icy silence of the tomb

So haunt thy days and chill thy dreaming nights (так посещать (в качестве привидения, неотступной мысли) твои дни и навевать холод на твои «сновидящие» ночи; to haunt – часто заезжать проведать; неотступно преследовать; мучить; не давать покоя /о мыслях и т.

That thou wouldst wish thine own heart dry of blood

So in my veins red life might stream again

And thou be conscience-calmed see here it is — (и ты бы успокоилась совестью – посмотри, вот она – )

I hold it towards you

The Ways of Love

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways

I love thee to the depth and breadth and height

My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight (/которых/ может достичь моя душа, когда устремляется /теряясь/ из виду = из видимого мира; feel — щупать, осязать, трогать)

For the ends of Being and ideal Grace

I love thee to the level of every day's

Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight

I love thee freely, as men strive for Right (я люблю тебя /так же/ свободно, как мужи борются за справедливость);

I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise

I love thee with the passion put to use

In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith

I love thee with a love I seemed to lose

With my lost saints, — I love thee with the breath

Smiles, tears, of all my life! and, if God choose

I shall but love thee better after death

E. B. Browning

The Ways of Love

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I love thee to the depth and breadth and height

My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight

For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.

I love thee to the level of every day's

Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.

I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;

I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.

I love thee with the passion put to use

In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.

I love thee with a love I seemed to lose

With my lost saints, — I love thee with the breath,

Smiles, tears, of all my life! — and, if God choose,

I shall but love thee better after death.

E. B. Browning

THE DIVISION

RAIN on the windows, creaking doors

      With blasts that besom the green (с порывами /ветра/, которые метут по зелени);

And I am here, and you are there (и яздесь, и тытам),

      And a hundred miles between

O were it but the weather, Dear

      O were it but the miles

That summed up all our severance (в которых заключалась бы вся наша разделенность; to sum up – суммировать, обобщать; severance – отделение, разделение, раздел, разрыв),

      There might be room for smiles

But that thwart thing betwixt us twain = between; twain = two),

      Which nothing cleaves or clears

Is more than distance, Dear, or rain (/

      And longer than the years

RAIN on the windows, creaking doors,

      With blasts that besom the green;

And I am here, and you are there,

      And a hundred miles between!

O were it but the weather, Dear,

      O were it but the miles

That summed up all our severance,

      There might be room for smiles.

But that thwart thing betwixt us twain,

      Which nothing cleaves or clears,

Is more than distance, Dear, or rain,

      And longer than the years!

Thomas Hardy, 1893

WHEN YOU ARE OLD

WHEN you are old and grey and full of sleep

And nodding by the fire, take down this book

And slowly read, and dream of the soft look

Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep (который был присущ некогда твоим глазам, и об их глубоких тенях = о глубине твоих глаз);

How many loved your moments of glad grace

And loved your beauty with love false or true

But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you

And loved the sorrows of your changing face (и любил печали твоего меняющегося, изменчивого лица);

And bending down beside the glowing bars

Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled (пробормочи, прошепчи, немного печально, с легкой досадой, как Любовь бежала (от тебя), покинула (тебя); to flee – убегать, спасаться бегством; исчезать, пропадать)

And paced upon the mountains overhead

And hid his face amid a crowd of stars (и спрятала свое лицо, свой лик в толпе звезд, в сонме звезд; to hide – прятать, скрывать).

WHEN you are old and grey and full of sleep,

And nodding by the fire, take down this book,

And slowly read, and dream of the soft look

Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,

And loved your beauty with love false or true,

But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,

And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,

Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled

And paced upon the mountains overhead

And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

The Vagabond

Give to me the life I love,

      Let the lave go by me,

Give the jolly heaven above

      And the by-way nigh me.

Bed in the bush with stars to see — (ложе в кустах, чтобы были видны звезды)

      Bread I dip in the river — (хлеб я макаю в реку)

There's the life for a man like me,

      There's the life for ever.

Let the blow fall soon or late,

      Let what will be o'er me;

Give the face of earth around

      And the road before me.

Wealth I seek not, hope nor love,

      Nor a friend to know me;

All I seek, the heaven above

      And the road below me.

Or let autumn fall on me

      Where afield I linger,

Silencing the bird on tree,

      Biting the blue finger.

White as meal the frosty field — (бело, как мука, заиндевелое: «морозное» поле; frost — мороз)

      Warm the fireside haven — (тепла гавань, тепло укрытие возле камина; fireside — место возле камина; домашний очаг)

Not to autumn will I yield,

      Not to winter even; (и даже зиме)

Let the blow fall soon or late,

      Let what will be o'er me;

Give the face of earth around

      And the road before me.

Wealth I ask not, hope nor love,

      Nor a friend to know me.

All I ask, the heaven above,

      And the road below me.

Stanzas for Music

THERE be none of Beauty's daughters

   With a magic like thee;

And like music on the waters

   Is thy sweet voice to me:

   (твой сладкозвучный голос для меня)

When, as if its sound were causing

The charmed ocean's pausing,

The waves lie still and gleaming,

And the lull'd winds seem dreaming:

(и стихшие ветра, кажется, грезят)

(lull – убаюкивать, успокаивать, смягчать)

And the midnight moon is weaving

   Her bright chain o'er the deep;

Whose breast is gently heaving,

   As an infant's asleep:

   (как у младенца, когда он спит)

So the spirit bows before thee,

To listen and adore thee;

With a full but soft emotion,

Like the swell of Summer's ocean.

We'll go no more a-roving

SO, we'll go no more a-roving

   So late into the night,

Though the heart be still as loving,

   And the moon be still as bright.

For the sword outwears its sheath,

   And the soul wears out the breast,

And the heart must pause to breathe,

  And love itself have rest.

Though the night was made for loving,

   And the day returns too soon,

Yet we'll go no more a-roving

  By the light of the moon.

We'll go no more a-roving

SO, we'll go no more a-roving

   So late into the night,

Though the heart be still as loving,

   And the moon be still as bright.

For the sword outwears its sheath,

   And the soul wears out the breast,

And the heart must pause to breathe,

  And love itself have rest.

Though the night was made for loving,

   And the day returns too soon,

Yet we'll go no more a-roving

  By the light of the moon.

George Gordon Byron

She walks in Beauty

SHE walks in beauty, like the night

   Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

And all that 's best of dark and bright

   Meet in her aspect and her eyes:

   (соединяется в её облике и её глазах)

   (aspect – внешность, выражение чего-л., устар. взгляд)

Thus mellow'd to that tender light

   Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,

   Had half impair'd the nameless grace

Which waves in every raven tress,

   Or softly lightens o'er her face;

Where thoughts serenely sweet express

   How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,

   So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,

The smiles that win, the tints that glow,

   But tell of days in goodness spent,

A mind at peace with all below,

  A heart whose love is innocent!

She walks in Beauty

SHE walks in beauty, like the night

   Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

And all that 's best of dark and bright

On music

When through life unblest we rove,

Losing all that made life dear,

Should some notes we used to love,

In days of boyhood, meet our ear,

Oh! how welcome breathes the strain!

Wakening thoughts that long have slept,

Kindling former smiles again

In faded eyes that long have wept.

Like the gale, that sighs along

Beds of oriental flowers,

(
oriental – азиатский, восточный)
Is the grateful breath of song,

That once was heard in happier hours.

Fill'd with balm the gale sighs on,

Though the flowers have sunk in death;

So, when pleasure's dream is gone,

Its memory lives in Music's breath.

Music, oh, how faint, how weak,

Language fades before thy spell!

Why should Feeling ever speak,

When thou canst breathe her soul so well?

Friendship's balmy words may feign,

Love's are even more false than they;

Oh! 'tis only music's strain

Can sweetly soothe, and not betray.
