  Elvis Aron Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1935. Given a guitar at age of 11, he picked up hillbilly songs and later, the blues. After graduating from high school, he worked as a movie usher and truck driver. One day he went into a Sun Records studio to make a recording for his mother’s birthday. He caught the ear of the owner, who signed him to make other recordings…
  
  Personal excesses overtook Presley in 1977, when, at age 42, he died of a drug overdose. By then he had become one of the greatest stars of the 20th century. His home has become an international shrine. Sightings of Elvis by the faithful continue.

  America’s most important and original contribution to world culture. It is music that depends primarily on improvisation, freedom and swing. The first music known as jazz was the New Orleans style (later known as Dixieland), in which a small group would collectively improvise on a well-known tune.

  Rap
  Rap is improvised patter in rhyme, chanted to a prerecorded beat. It is a sort of street poetry that follows in the long tradition of black rhetoric. It first caught on as a pop phenomenon among young African-Americans and Latinos in the South Bronx and Harlem in the late 1970s.
