  Gulf of Finland
  St.Petersburg, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, was founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and it was called so in his honour. It is the second largest city after Moscow.
  St.Petersburg is situated on the Neva river and on the coast of the Gulf of Finland.
  From 1712 up to 1918 it was the capital of Russia.

  “The Bronze Horseman”
  Walking along the Neva embankment we can see a monument to the citiy’s founder Peter I called “The Bronze Horseman.”This monument was created by the sculptor Falconet.

  Peter- and- Paul Fortress
  There are a lot of places of interest in St. Petersburg. One of them is Peter and Paul Fortress. It was built to protect the Neva banks from the Swedish invasion.Later D.Trezzini, the famous Swiss architect, reconsructed the fortress. It became a prison. Now it is a museum.

  Palace Square
  The city is famous for its magnificent architectural ensembles of the 18-19 centuries.
  Palace Square is the central square in St.Petersburg. It’s famous for its Winter Palace (built by Rastrelli) which was the residence of Russian tsars till the revolution. Now it is the State Hermitage.

  The Alexander Pillar is in the centre of the square. It was built by Montferrand.

  St.Petrsburg is an industrial, cultural and scientific centre. There are over 80 museums, about 20 theatres, exhibitions, clubs, university colleges, institutes, schools, libraries and parks.
