Geographical position
London is the capital of England and the UK.
It is situated in the mount of the river Thames.
It is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest city in Europe.
London was founded by Romans, who named it Londinium.
It is the world's leading financial centre.
Greater London (London and its surburbs) covers an area of 1,583 square kilometres.

History
London was founded in AD 43 by the Roman invarders.
At first it was a settlement but due to its convenient position it grew and developed into a city.
In 11th century London became the capital of England.
The city was built rather chaotically, the street being narrow and dirty.
It grew and developed together with the developing of the nation.

In 1666 the Great Fire of London destroyed the most part of the city, which was rebuilt, but old planning remained untouched.
For century it was a prominent port through which wealth and prosperity came to the country.

Parts of London
Historically and geographically London can be divided into three parts:
the City
the West End
the East End

The City
The heart of London is the City.
The City is the commercial and financial centre of the country, with offices of large firms, banks and the Stock Exchange and the Bank of England.
Few people live here, but over a million people come to the City to work.

The West End
The West End can be called the centre of London.
The West End has always been considered a place where aristocrats lived.
The name “West End” is associated with wealth, luxury, and goods of high quality.
It is the richest and the most beautiful part of London.
There is a great number of sights and attractions.

The Houses of Parliament or Big Ben
The Houses of Parliament is known as Big Ben.
It is the seat of the British Government, stretches along the north bank of the River Thames.
This place is among the most beautiful building in Europe.

St. Paul’s Cathedral
St. Paul’s Cathedral is the greatest of the English church and seat of the Bishop of London.
Its dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on this site.
At 365 feet (111 m) high, it was the tallest building in London from 1710 to 1962, and its dome is also among the highest in the world.

Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey has more historical associations than any other building in Britain.
Nearly all English kings and queens have been crowned here.
Many outstanding statesmen, scientists, writers, poets and painters are buried here.

Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the Queen and is оnе of the best known symbols of the British monarchy.
The house was bought by George III in 1762 from Duke of Buckingham, from whom it takes its name.
Visitors come to see Changing the Guard in front of the Palace.

Trafalgar Square
Trafalgar Square is the geographical centre of London.
It was named in memory of Admiral Nelson’s victory in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
The tall Nelson’s Column stands in the middle of the square.

The Tower of London
The oldest part of the Tower is the White Tower, built by the William the Conqueror in the end of the 11th century to protect and control the city.
The Tower was once a fortress, a royal palace, then a prison, and even a royal zoo. Now it is a museum.
The ravens still live here as a part of its history.
There is a legend that if the ravens disappear the Tower will fall. That’s why the birds are carefully guarded.

Every night at 10 p.m. the Ceremony of the Keys takes place in the Tower.
The Yeomen of the Guard known as “beefeaters” in Tudor dress uniforms keep watch and lock the towers.

The East End
The East End was previously considered the place where poor and not well-to-do people live.
The identity of the East End as a place of deprivation and the poverty changed in the 1960s with certain gangster glamour.
The ugly docks and factories now closed, and new hotels, stadiums and houses are being built.
Now it is considered a bohemian district.

London fogs
London has a temperate oceanic climate.
The fog is one of the most typical features because of geographical position in a deep river valley.

Greater London
Now London extends much more than the City, the West End and the East End. Its suburbs grow rapidly.
London and its suburbs are called Greater London.
London's urban area includes a set of district names, such as Bloomsbury, Mayfair, Wembley and Whitechapel.
