Saint Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great as the window to Europe. The place where Saint Petersburg’s history comes from, is the marvellous Peter and Paul fortress. The architect of it was Domenico Trezzini.
The amazing Winter Palace, the home of the Russian emperors, was equal to any in Europe. It was built by Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli in 1762. Nowadays The State Hermitage Museum is located in this building.
In front of the Winter Palace, on Palace Square, there is an outstanding column, dedicated to the victory over Napoleon. It is called The Alexander Column and the architect is Auguste de Montferrand. The magnificent ensemble is ended by the General Staff Building. It was designed by Carlo Rossi.
Located on the Nevsky Prospect, a splendid Kazan Cathedral was also dedicated to the victory in the Patriotic War of 1812. It was designed by the architect Andrey Voronikhin.
Built by the famous architects, our city became an open air museum and the one of the most fascinating cities in the world.
