The legend says that in 1263 during the night the Norsemen tried to surprise the sleeping Scots That is why they took off their shoes. But as they walked barefoot they came to a place full of thistles and one of the Norsemen unfortunately stood on a thistle and cried out in pain. The Scots woke up and began to fight. That battle saved Scotland from the Norsemen and the flower was chosen as Scotland's national emblem. In 1470 James III ordered to stamp the thistle on silver coins as the royal symbol of Scotland.

The British Isles have many rivers but they are not very long. The longest of the English rivers is the Severn. It flows into the Irish Sea. The most important river of Scotland is the Clyde. Glasgow stands on it.

Many highland games take place all over Scotland every year. The most famous meeting is in Braemar, a small village in the Scottish Highlands. The games are always on the first Saturday in September.
Many athletes travel to Scotland each year to take part in the games. They compete in events like the hammer throw, shot put and the hill run. There are also music and dancing competitions.
Marching bands perform for the crowds. They wear traditional clothing and play the bagpipe.

8. What are kilts used for by the Scotsmen nowadays? What were they used for in past times?
The kilt as a woollen skirt-like garment was invented in Scotland during the 18th century and was adopted as part of 19th century Victorian Scottish Celtic revival, along with clan tartens and so on. The ancestor of this garment was a kind of cloak made of felt (preshrunk wool) which you could wrap around yourself to stay dry and warm.
It has changed a lot since the past, is now most often seen at ceremonies and official occasions ranging from weddings to military processions.
