That battle saved Scotland from the Norsemen and the flower was chosen as Scotland's national emblem.   The kilt as a woollen skirt-like garment was invented in Scotland during the 18th century and was adopted as part of 19th century Victorian Scottish Celtic revival, along with clan tartens and so on. The ancestor of this garment was a kind of cloak made of felt (preshrunk wool) which you could wrap around yourself to stay dry and warm.
