  The territory of the UK is about 244,000 square kilometres.

  The climate
  is mild the whole year round. The Atlantic Ocean, the warm waters of the Gulf Stream influence the climate.
  So the English climate is not bad but you cannot say the same about the English weather. (You can often hear Englishmen saying, "We do not have any climate. We just have the weather.") The worst thing about the English weather is it's being so changeable. A fine morning may turn into a nasty afternoon. The clear sky may get overcast with clouds within minutes. Sunshine very rarely lasts long enough to enjoy it.

  Who are the British?
  British people live in the UK. They are people who live in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. British people can also either be English, Scottish, Welsh, or Irish (from Northern Ireland only).
  The British are said to be reserved in manners, dress and speech. They are famous for their politeness, self-discipline and especially for their sense of humour. British people have a strong sense of humour which sometimes can be hard for foreigners to understand.
  Britain is a country of mixed cultures. London has the largest non-white population of any European city and over 250 languages are spoken there. Therefore not all British people are White or Christians.

  Languages
  The most commonly spoken language is English, which is the first language of over 90% of residents. Other languages spoken in Britain include Welsh and Scottish Gaelic. People immigrating to Britain have also brought many other languages with them, and there are significant numbers of speakers of languages such as Punjabi, Urdu and Cantonese.

  Many immigrants are bilingual. Many Indians, for example,speak both Hindi and English, a lot of Chinese speak both Chinese and English. Many Turks speak English and Turkish.
  There are number of different regional accents in the UK. Some people in London speak «Сockney», in Birmingham- «Brum», in Newcastle- «Ceordie».There is a varity of English which belongs to no particular region. It is Standart English,which is usually taught to foreigners.
