  London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and commercial center. It is one of the largest cities in the world. Its population is about 8 million.
  Traditionally it is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End. They are very different and seem to belong to different epochs

  The Houses of Parliament or Westminster Palace is the place where British Parliament works. British Parliament consists of two houses- the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

  The members of the house of Lords are not elected by the population. They are officially appointed by the Monarch.
  There are over 1,100 permanent, non-elected members; peers and life peers.
  They examine and revise bills from the House of Commons, can delay bills for one year.
  The chairperson of the House of Lords is Lord Chancellor. He sits on the Woolsack, a large bag of wool covered with red cloth. It shows that wool made England rich.

  Big Ben is the Clock Tower. It was built in 1858.It is on the Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament. The clock has four faces and a very big loud bell. The bell weighs 13 tons. The people of London who live near the Houses o Parliament can hear the sound of the bell every hour.

  It was named in memory of Admiral Nelson’s victory in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
  In the center there is Nelson’s Column with the figure of the greatest seaman.
