Content-based activities
Students are asked
to identify the author’s main claim and find all the reasons and premises the author advances to support his/her point of view.
to anticipate or raise questions or objections to the author’s viewpoint, and assess whether these objections can reveal a significant weakness of the arguments given in the text.
to think of their own arguments to support the opposite point of view
to examine informed opinions, consider various opposing views and the reasons advanced for them, gather relevant information, and formulate your own considered opinion regarding that issue
to formulate categories and distinctions in order to find a useful way to classify the given information.
to formulate multiple alternatives for resolving a problem being described, develop a variety of different plans to achieve some goal.
to role play some situations from the stories where they can pretend to be judges judging the characters of the story and their actions in the court.

Not based on the content activities
Make up two utterances using the table, each consisting of at least two sentences. In the first utterance, the second sentence should add something to the opening sentence (“Besides”,). In the second case, the continuation should oppose the beginning (“But on the other hand,…”)

Students are asked
to complete the statements in one of contrasting pairs, showing that a similar attitude caused by different motives leads to different demands
1.I get bored very quickly, so I won’t spend my holiday in the country unless….
2.I hate housework, so I won’t spend my holiday in the country unless….
to provide the inferential flow from the same reasons to the different consequences. (The utterances have the same beginnings and different endings )
to instruct their imaginary listener how to behave in one of the following situations…
to respond to each of the following cues in two or three sentences trying to convince your partner to change his mind. (to provide a different viewpoint and support it with arguments)
To compare different things or opposite viewpoints and think from which of them people can benefit more;
to anticipate and respond to reasonable criticisms they might expect to be raised against their views;
to discuss different options with the partner (The options are given in the students book), agree on one of them and explain their choice.
