The Origin of the days of the week
The presentation was made by the student of the 4 form, Khallaev Viktor

3 слайд
Having read about the origin of the names of the days of the week in
different languages and cultures, I wondered where the English names of
the days of the week came from.
The relevance of this study is to learn everything about the history of the
names of the English days of the week, because memorizing these words
causes difficulties for children. I think after my research, it will be easier
for me and them to learn these words.
Research objectives:
study the origin of the names of English days of the week
4 слайд
You know the names of the days of the week:Sunday,
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
But do you know where the names come from?

Tasks
consider the theory of the origin of the names of the days of the week in English
The object of research:
the theory of the origin of the names of the days
Subject of research:
English names of the days of the week.
The hypothesis of the study is that the names of
the English days of the week have nothing to
do with numbering, as, for example, with
Slavic nationalities. They are associated with
the names of ancient mythical Gods.
6 слайд
Sunday
If you look carefully at the word Sunday, you may guess
that it comes from Sun-day, the day of the Sun.
7 слайд
Monday
The name of the second day, Monday, comes from the word
Moon; so Monday is the day of the Moon.
The names of the other days of the week are connected with
the names of different gods and planets.
8 слайд
Tuesday
The name of this day comes from the name of the one-
armed god of war Tiu, who was worshipped by the ancient
Germans. The Roman conquerors brought their name to
Tuesday - Martis, that is, the day of Mars. But the Germans
used its local equivalent for the name of the day and began
to call Tuesday Tiw's day.
9 слайд
Wednesday
This day of the week for the Romans was dedicated to
Mercury, but the northerners went their own way here.
They renamed the day in honor of their supreme god named
Woden (today we know him as Odin ).Once this word
sounded likeWōdnesdæg, but over the past couple of
millennia it has transformed into Wednesday.
10 слайд
Thursday
The word Thursday comes from the name of the god Thor.
Thor was the German god of thunder, and even now you
can sometimes meet the word Thunderday which is the
other name for Thursday.
11 слайд
Friday
The word Friday comes from the name of the old German
goddess Frig who was the goddess of beauty.
12 слайд
Saturday
The last day of the week is Saturday. The first part of this
word, Saturn, is Latin. It is the name of the god and the
planet. The second part of the word is English. So Saturday
is the day of Saturn.
13 слайд
My hypothesis that the English names of the days of the week are not related
to numbering has been confirmed. But they are connected not only with the
ancient Gods, but also with the names of the planets. The modern language
is influenced by historical processes that took place long ago. To better
memorize foreign words, you need to study also mythology.
