  Where are the rainforests? Rainforests cover six per cent of the Earth’s surface. There are rainforests in many parts of the world but the biggest forests are in South America, Africa and South East Asia.

  What’s there in the rainforests? About 75% of all types of animals that we know come from rainforests. Thousands and thousands of animals live in rainforests. Some of them are familiar to us , some look strange and unique.

  What’s there in the rainforests? . There are many very beautiful birds, insects and reptiles. Many of them live in the trees over 30 meters from the ground.

  Why are the rainforests important? The rainforests are very important for us. We need them! The trees and other plants in the forest help to make the air that we breathe. They also help to control the weather. They give us wood, rubber, fruits and many of our medicines.

  What’s happening in the rainforests? Unfortunately in many places the rainforests are in danger. For example, many years ago there was a large rainforest in Java. There were thousands of different plants and animals in the forest but now there is nothing. People cut down the trees because they wanted to grow rice. They also planed rubber trees to make rubber. Many animals lived in the forest. Some of hem went to the other parts of the island but many of them disappeared forever. The same thing is happening now in many parts of the world. The rainforests are in danger!

  What’s a rainforest? A tropical forest with tall trees growing thickly and with high rainfalls. A dense evergreen forest in a tropical region having abundant rainfalls throughout the year. Usually tropical woodland with a high annual rainfall and lofty trees forming a continuous canopy. A very dense forest grows in a region, usually tropical, where rain is very heavy throughout the year.

  Secrets from the trees. If you cut across a tree, you can see that it has “ rings”. Most trees grow one new ring every year. Because of this we know how old the tree is. The Bristlecone Pines in California are over 4000 years old. This means that they have over 4000 rings. When the climate is dry or very cold,trees do not grow very much and their rings are usually thin. When it is very we and good for trees, the rings are much thicker. If we look at the rings on the Bristlecone Pines we can learn about the climate 4000 years ago. We can see how our climate is changing today.
