Introduction.
Today,
probably, it is very difficult to find a person who would consider studying the
English language something supernatural. We no longer think about whether or
not we need to learn English. This foreign language, whether we like it or not,
more and more penetrates into our everyday life, knowledge of it even at the
lowest level becomes an inconspicuous, self-evident phenomenon. But ignorance
of it can create a difficult or even dead-end situation. Historically, English
has become the official language of the United Kingdom and the United States,
spoken and written by people from Ireland, Canada, Malta, Australia and New
Zealand. More than 450 million people all over the world regard English as
their native language, and for 98 million people it is the second language. It
is the most important language in more than 60 countries. English is the mother
tongue of 12 nations, and the official and semi-official language of another 33
nations. This means that every seventh person in the world speaks English.
Knowledge of English can help you to explain yourself in any conceivable
situation anywhere in the world. Information in figures: 1.5 billion people in
the world understand English, 1 billion study it.
English
is so popular, maybe because one day the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland was a huge empire. The British had colonies around the world,
and all the people who lived in this territory had to speak English. Its
territory was on every continent and ocean. By the beginning of the 20th
century, the population of the British Empire amounted to 400-500 million
people (about a quarter of the total population of the land of that time), and
it occupied an area of 30 million kV. km. USA, Canada, Australia, New
Zealand, India, most of Africa, the Caribbean islands and others were the colonies
of Great Britain.
English
is the official and working language of the United Nations. Any international
document, technical article, artwork, instruction, poster, book, song, letter
will be understood and read by representatives of different peoples, if they
are written in English. It is the language in the modern world that has become
the language of international communication. Finn and the Turks, Hungarian and
Arab, Russian and French, without knowing each other's language, will be able
to explain themselves in English.
The need
to introduce new information technologies in all spheres of human life is
becoming more and more obvious. It is difficult to imagine modern life without
a computer. It became a necessity, like a calculator, a notebook, a typewriter,
a music center, a device for accessing and storing information. The world of
informatics "speaks" in English. Billion Internet sites are in
English. Mastering modern computer technology and, especially, the Internet is
also impossible without the knowledge of English. In this I was personally
convinced when I was preparing the materials for the reports. I found the
answers to most of the questions via the Internet, but without the knowledge of
English I could not read or understand the required text.
English
became "new Latin." In the field of scientific know-how and
technological development, everyone must know English in order to be the part
of the 21st century. It is not difficult to understand why in Italy, for
example, English is compulsory for many technical professions. And in China this
is the main language studied in schools.
English
is so popular that it has become the standard language of international
communication. Currently 75% of the world mail is in English, 60% of radio
programs are broadcast in English, more than half of the world's periodicals
are printed in English.
The role
and meaning of English in the world can be spoken endlessly. Undoubted is the
fact that English is an important component in the life of a modern man, and
everyone can find for themselves more than one reason for studying it.
Now you
can go to the reasons for studying this language.
Reasons:
1) Traveling abroad
Traveling
in English-speaking countries is possible only if you know and understand
foreign speech. It's no secret that today almost every person wants to go on
vacation abroad. Thanks to the knowledge of English, you can easily communicate
with people not only in English-speaking countries. There is a certain
percentage of the population in any part of the world who can understand
foreign speech. English is also well owned by people whose work is connected
with tourists. In the event that you know a foreign speech, you can always
easily ask for help in a foreign country. That's why you will feel confident
abroad.
2) Education
The role
of English in the modern world is evident to students who wish to receive a
decent education. Your knowledge allows you to study at any university. The
received document on education is quoted in all countries. It's no secret that
having, for example, a diploma from the University of London, a graduate can
get a job in prestigious work anywhere in the world.
Almost
in any large library there are books in English. Detectives, novels, poems and
other works can be read in the original, knowing a foreign language. It's no
secret that translating books is not always accurate and literal. Not less
valuable are the originals of technical literature. Thanks to the knowledge of
English, it is possible to study in more depth the equipment or equipment of interest.
3) The world of technology
The
relevance of learning English can also be explained by the rapid development of
technology. Annually specialists from all over the world create new inventions.
They are given names that are most often English-speaking. Surprisingly, the
words familiar to us, such as «laptop», «computer», «scanner», «mobile» and
others, came from English.
Thanks
to the rapid development of the Internet, representatives of different nations
began to interact closely on the Web. In order to understand each other, they
use English.
4) Youth life
English
plays an important role in the lives of teenagers and young people. Computer
games in English are very popular among gamers. It's no secret that many young
people spend a lot of free time using them. As a rule, new foreign games in the
first time do not have a Russian translation. At this point, only a knowledge
of a foreign language can help a player. Thanks to this, he will be able to try
out the novelty without feeling any discomfort. There are also useful programs
in English. Knowledge of foreign language allows you to use easily not only
games, but also applications.
A large
number of English words are present in the youth speech. Experts believe that
this is due to the stereotypes and ideals that were created in teenagers’
society. Young people are sure that the standard of living in America is much
higher than ours. Using in their speech English borrowings, they definitely
approach their ideal in a certain way.
Anglicism’s in Russian.
Borrowing
is one of the sources of replenishment of lexical composition. They reflect the
facts of ethnic, social, cultural and economic contacts between representatives
of different language groups. This phenomenon is due to a number of reasons:
• The need to name new items and
phenomena;
• Absence of equivalents in the
Russian language;
• Absence of the most accurate
name;
• Providing a stylistic effect.
The
growth of borrowings in the Russian language became noticeable at the end of
the last century. This is due to the collapse of the USSR and changes in all
spheres of society. Many linguists argue that the phenomenal expansion of
Anglicisms is observed in the following areas:
• Power and politics;
• Economy and business;
• Science and technology;
• Sports.
The
greatest influence of English language is observed in advertising. Every year
more and more firms, goods and shops are called foreign words.
The following words can be
assigned to Anglicism:
shoes; boots; comp; friend; Face.
Let's look at what opportunities
and benefits you get, knowing English and being able to speak
it.
1. You can
find new friends all over the world, traveling or communicating
on the Internet.
2. You can
watch movies without translation, listen to, understand and sing
your favorite songs, read books in the original.
3. You feel
comfortable in any country.
4. Knowing
the language, you can change the job to a more decent one, if you
have not found your business to your liking or take a higher position in
your company.
5.
Speaking fluently, you can get education in the best universities and
anywhere in the world.
Here is one more thing that can
be attributed to the benefits.
Knowledge of English language
and salary.
Not
everyone knows that many employers are willing to pay more to employees who
speak English. According to the research, candidates with knowledge of foreign
language earn about 10-40% more than their colleagues. It should be noted that
in some companies only those employees who speak English are employed.
Students
with knowledge of English have a huge advantage. Some firms, including large
ones, are ready to take inexperienced specialists and provide them with a high
salary in the event that they own a foreign language.
How to learn a foreign language?
Today,
the English language is being taught as early as preschool. Almost all parents
realize that the knowledge of a foreign language is extremely important. That's
why they are intensively engaged with their child in this direction. To train a
schoolboy or preschooler, they hire a tutor or send it to special courses.
Recently, many adults also want to learn English. To achieve this goal, you can
use the services of a tutor or enroll in the appropriate courses. However, you
can learn English yourself. To do this, we recommend using educational
literature or special video and audio courses.
Benny Lewis knows six languages - French,
Spanish, English, German, Brazilian Portuguese and Esperanto. Benny wrote the
book " Fluent in 3 Months: How Anyone at Any Age Can
Learn to Speak Any Language from Anywhere in the World". The
author believes that with the right approach and sufficient practice to master
a foreign language for three months can each.
Here are some of his tips
for learning the language in three months:
1. Speak the language aloud from
the very first day
Beginners
should not be afraid that they distort words or wrong phrases. Most
importantly, they get used to talking out loud - right away.
2. First, learn useful phrases
Beginners
should learn the simplest phrases like "bathroom where?", Which will
help them to ask pressing questions. Not very eloquent, but understandable.
3. Forget about studying strict
grammatical rules
At the
initial stage it is important to fill up the vocabulary and learn the basic
phrases. You do not need to worry about correct grammar - you will have time to
learn it later.
4. Communicate with native
speakers - for example, by Skype
According
to Benny, one of the best tools for learning the language these days is the
Internet - in particular, video chat like Skype. Using this program (or some
other similar), the native speaker of Russian can communicate with a person
from the US or any country in the world.
5. Listen to the radio
Radio is
another way to immerse yourself in the language environment. Listen to the
radio broadcasts of the country where people speak the language you are learning.
6. Tell us about yourself
One of
Benny's favorite tips for beginners is to write a short story about yourself in
your language and work on his translation with a native speaker. It will
relatively quickly help you memorize many words and phrases.
7. Do not register for general
language courses
Benny
strongly does not advise newcomers to enroll on the "for all" courses
- they have a too general program. According to him, at the initial stage of
training personal feedback from the carrier is much more useful.
8. Be prepared to spend a lot of
time on practice
Benny
believes that people who are willing to spend a full time working on a foreign
language will reach the B2 level in just a few months. If you do not have so
much time, then, practicing for a couple of hours a day, you will reach the
same level in a year.
9. Do not strive for perfection
People
are often so eager to talk ideally, that when they do not get it (and the
newcomers never get it, by the way), they get frustrated and generally drop
out. The best way to deal with the problem is to laugh at your own mistakes and
not try to be perfect.
My future plans are
related to English.
In the
future I plan to improve my English, especially its conversational part. After
graduating from school, enter the faculty of foreign languages so that when I
graduate I will be able to work as an interpreter.
Now I will talk about this
profession a little more.
· A translator from English
to Russian is a profession that every year becomes more popular and more
popular. It is often chosen by graduates who know a foreign language well.
There was a profession in ancient times. Its formation is connected with the
origin of economic relations between countries. During the collapse of the
USSR, the profession was not very popular, since the work of such workers was low-paid.
Today, a translator from English to Russian is characterized by a high and
stable income. As a rule, such specialists work in large and influential
companies.
The
profession of an interpreter is excellent for those people who have: - a
predisposition to foreign languages; - good memory; - good diction; -
perseverance; - Communication skills; - diplomatic qualities, and also have
advanced hearing and are able to imitate.
A
qualified specialist is often sent for earnings abroad. He can easily register for
himself citizenship there, as well as have a stable and high income.
Let's consider some of the most
common translation profiles:
1. Translator-synchronic.
In
addition to the professional skills of simultaneous translation: a high level
of active mastery of the original language and the language of translation,
quick response, clear diction, ability to concentrate, noise immunity, mental
stability, good physical shape.
2. Oral non-synchronous
translator.
In
addition to good oral interpersonal or consecutive interpreting skills:
calmness, sociability, ability not to get lost in the public, mental stability,
good physical form.
3. Translator of
technical texts.
Required
qualities and skills: profound knowledge of the original language, including
phraseology, knowledge of the basic terminology of modern science and
technology in the original language and in the target language, professional
knowledge of the written form of the target language, elementary literacy,
computer skills and computer programs at a level sufficient to work with
translating texts, owning the Internet for quick receipt and sending of
translated materials, the ability to find information on the Internet,
perseverance, the ability to work with dictionaries and directories, mindfulness,
concentration, high efficiency.
4. Written translator of
economic and legal texts.
In
addition to the requirements for translators of technical texts: good knowledge
of modern banking, financial and legal terminology, the ability to correctly
execute translations of legal documents, including translations for
notarization. Regardless of the target language, knowledge of the English
language is desirable (due to the large number of English terms, names and
abbreviations in the current economic and financial sphere).
5. Translator of fiction.
Unlike
all other types of both written and oral translations, when translating
fiction, the ability for thoughtful and unhurried work with text is put on the
forefront. It is necessary to fully understand not only the content, but also
the subtext of the translated work of art, and above all, the ability to convey
this content and all the stylistic subtleties in its translation. It is
important, of course, and the ability to properly plan your time to meet the
deadlines set by the publisher without sacrificing the quality of the
translation.
Given
the increasing complexity and intensity of translation work, it should be noted
that in all types and genres of translation and in almost any specialization,
an interpreter necessarily requires high performance and a good physical form.
In a sparing regime, only a translator of fiction can afford to work. Although
he also experiences stress. At the same time, in all types and genres of
translation, irrespective of personal qualities, the professional suitability
of an interpreter is determined, first of all, by the availability of the
necessary professional translation skills acquired in the course of training at
the university and then tested and fixed in the course of practical translation
activities.
Summing up.
English
plays an important role in our life. Your knowledge of English is necessary for
people of all ages. English is connected with all spheres of life. Without it,
you can not do with those who want to get a prestigious education or find a
highly paid job. According to the information provided above, it can be
concluded that employees who speak English earn more than those who do not know
it. This fact can serve as an excellent stimulus for studying foreign
vocabulary and grammar.
