    3 слайд

London, the capital of Great Britain, is a very old town. It is two thousand years old. Many years ago London was a small town on the Thames. There were a lot of villages round it and after many years London and three hundred villages grew into a very large city. Some of the names of those villages you can find in the names of the streets in modern London — Kensington, Westminster and others.
There were many wars in those days and people from other countries came to Great Britain and destroyed London, but new houses of stone grew up.
London stands not far from the sea. Many ships from other countries came to the port of London and brought cotton, food and other things. Factories grew in London and other cities. Many shops were opened in the center of London. In 1863 the first underground railway began to work. It was very short in those days.
Now London is a beautiful city with large squares and parks. London is one of the biggest cities in the world.

    5 слайд

    Big Ben
Big Ben is one of the most popular places of interest in London and symbols of England. Every year many people visit the capital of Great Britain to see it and take some photos with it in the background. It is thought that Big Ben is a high tower with a very big clock, but that’s not really true. In fact, this tower is called Saint Stephens Tower, but people, even those who live in the UK, are used to calling it "Big Ben." Actually, Big Ben is the huge bell inside the building. Its weight is about thirteen tons and it rings every hour daily: once at one o'clock, twice at two o'clock and so on. However, people who live near the tower can hear at New Year’s Night how the bell strikes thirteen. It’s considered to be the biggest bell ever made in the country. The bell was firstly used in 1859 and was cracked soon because of the heavy hammer, which struck too strong. After this situation the hammer was changed, but that crack is still there.
There are many hypotheses for the origin of the name “Big Ben”. The most popular one suggests that the bell was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who was responsible for the installation. Some of people say he was really tall and that’s why this bell is called big, but the majority believe it is called Big because of its size.
Big Ben is one of the best-known landmarks in Europe. Nowadays the word Big Ben connects the bell, the clock and the tower at the same time. The tower is closed to the general public, but people with a "special interest" might offer an excursion for additional payment.

    Tower of London
The Tower of London is one of the most famous and most interesting places in the city. The Tower was once a palace, a fortress, a prison and even a Zoo. Today it is known as a historical museum. Despite being called “The Tower of London”, the place consists of 20 towers. The White Tower is the oldest of them. It was built at the time of William the Conqueror. The Tower of London used to be a place where many famous people lived their last days before execution. Anne Boleyn was beheaded there and future Queen Elizabeth was kept in the prison but later she was released and became Queen. The guardians of the Tower still tell tourists many thrilling stories about things happened there when the place was a prison. Even a more interesting story is considered to be the one about the start of the Zoo. It is said that King Henry III was given an elephant, a polar bear and several leopards as gifts and he had no place to keep them in except for the Tower of London. Nowadays the Tower of London is a place of great interest for millions of people. Tourists come there to visit the museum of Royal Armouries, the Fusilier museum and a new Jewel Tower where Crown Jewels are exhibited.  Tourists can also speak with the guardians who wear special uniform which was assigned to them during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

    Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of the UK’s sovereigns since 1837 and today is the administrative headquarters of the Monarch. Despite being the place where many official events are held, the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace are also open to visitors every summer. The Queen and the Royal Family stay at the Palace on weekdays. They have rooms on the first floor of the north wing. When the Queen is staying the Royal Standard flag is flown above the central balcony. The Queen has an office where she usually works. Prince Charles has his own office and library there. However before becoming the administrative headquarters of the Monarch Buckingham House was bought by George III in 1761 for his wife. It was used as a family house and almost all George III’s children were born there. The court functions at that time were held in St.James Palace that was situated close to Buckingham House. George IV, the son of George III, decided to reconstruct the House and transform it into a palace. John Nash selected as an architect retained the main block but added a new suite of rooms. Those rooms are now known as State and semi-State Rooms and they remain unchanged since Nash’s time. Today Buckingham Palace is a working building where official meetings, royal events and different ceremonies take place. Each year the Palace is visited by more than 50.000 people who come to the State banquets, lunches and dinners.

    Westminster Abbey
There are many places of interest in Great Britain, particularly in its capital city – London. Millions of visitors a year arrive in London to see the sights of the city.
One of the most attractive constructions is Westminster Abbey. It attracts visitors not only with its architectural glory but also with its rich history and cultural importance.
Westminster Abbey is the place where many outstanding Englishmen are buried, among them well-known poets, writers, scientists, statesmen, painters and many others. Many people who visit the Abbey want to commemorate such great men as William Shakespeare, Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, Robert Burns, Bernard Show, Lord Byron, Walter Scott, Geoffrey Chaucer, and many others.
The history of Westminster Abbey dates back to the Middle Ages or even the earlier times, as 900 years ago St. Peter found the first church on the place, where the Abbey is now situated. The present building appeared during the reign of Henry III. There is one more reason why people are highly interested in Westminster Abbey. According to the ancient tradition all English kings and queens were crowned and wed here.
There is something special and wonderful about this building and it’s not only because of its impressive height and size. People who visit it for the first time are startled by its beauty and glory.

    London Eye
In 2000 a temporary Ferris wheel was constructed in London and it was going to be dismantled in 2005. But tourists and the Londoners liked it so much and it fit right in the city environment that it was decided to keep it permanently. For those 5 years the wheel had become one of the main sights of the city and over 4 million visitors come see it every year. London eye was called the Millennium wheel at first because it was open in 2000.
I understand why tourists like it so much, this wheel is one of the highest in the world and the view of the whole city of London from so high is remarkable, in addition you can see all the main sights from there.
It took them 6 years to build it and several architects and designers were working on it at the same time. The wheel is 135 meters high and it take approximately 30 minutes to complete one ride. There are 32 booths each of them is 10 tones. The booths are locked from outside and cannot be open from inside. Up to 25 people can fit in one booth.
London eye can be seen from different parts of the city. At night time it’s illuminated. Tourists love taking photos of it because they come out so pretty. The attraction is very popular and there is always a queue of people willing to ride it.

    London Zoo
London zoo was founded very long ago and was the first zoo in the world. It was open on April, 27 1828. Right now there are over 17 000 animals living in it which is over 750 species. The zoo has a very big territory and there is even an excursion bus for visitors inside.
One of the favorite places for all the tourists in the zoo is the penguin exhibit. Another popular exhibit is beautiful wild cats. Beside those animals there are also giraffes, monkeys, sneaks, llamas and even bats and butterflies. People who like birds are going to be happy too because it’s great place for them. There is also nice aquarium with fish and other sea creatures such as starfish, seahorses, manta rays. For little children there is a petting zoo. You can touch a lot of animals there.
It should be noted that there are no big animals in the zoo, in 2001 they were transferred to Whipsnade Zoo. For example, elephants and rhinoceros. Entry tickets are very expensive there.
At the end I would like to say that it’s a very nice place to relax and spend some time especially with children

    London Bridge
London Bridge is two thousand years old. The first bridge was of wood. Then people built the bridge of stone and called it London Bridge. There were houses and shops on it and people paid money when they crossed the bridge.
In 1831 a new bridge rose on the place of the first bridge. But the city grew very quickly and in I960 the people of London wanted to build a large new bridge at that place.
A very rich American bought the old London Bridge as people buy old things. He wanted to show the old bridge in America to people for money. The people of London liked their old London Bridge. But the city needed money for the new bridge.
The American brought the parts of the bridge on a ship to Arizona in the USA. Workers built the old bridge but there was no river under it now, only a street. No ships pass under it now, only people walk along the street and look at the old bridge. In 1973 the new London Bridge was opened on the site of the old bridge over the Thames.

    Madam Tussaud’s
Madam Tussaud’s is the most amazing wax museums in the world that attracts more than 2.5 million people every year. This museum is located in London close to the Baker Street where the house of the well-known fiction detective, Sherlock Holmes, is situated. Although the museum is one of the tourist attractions in London, Marie Tussaud, the founder of the museum, was French. Young Marie worked in Strasbourg for Dr. Philipp Curtis, a wax modeler. Firstly she helped him to organize an exhibition in Paris and then started doing models herself. She made her first wax model (Voltaire) being only 17 years old! After the death of her teacher, Marie inherited the collection of models with which she moved to Great Britain. Her first exhibition took place on Baker Street and consisted of no more than 30 models. In 1884 the museum was transferred to a new place where it is still located. There are several different halls in the unique museum: “The chamber of horrors”, “Grand Hall”, “The spirit of London”. The first one is the most thrilling place of the museum where the models of villains and their victims are presented. The second one exhibits different historical, political, military figures. And the last one is dedicated to the history of London. There is also a separate hall for stars’ models. That’s why every day hundreds of people stay in a long queue to enter Madam Tussaud’s and to see their favourite actors, singers, members of the Royal Family and many other characters and celebrities made of wax that amaze with their resemblance to reality. This museum gives an opportunity to see either great people of past decades or our contemporaries.

    21 слайд

    Hyde Park
Hyde Park is one of the eight Royal parks in London. When Londoners want to relax and get away to get some fresh air, to stroll, jog, ride a bike, or rent a horse they often come to Hyde Park.  The 350-acre green space has been the site of great exhibitions, demonstrations, and concerts.
Hyde Park is not named for a person. The word «Hyde» is derived from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning a unit of land measurement. The land the park sits on had been owned by the monks of Westminster Abbey since before the Norman Invasion. But in 1536 when King Henry the 8th dissolved the monasteries as part of his break with the Roman Catholic Church he seized the property and turned it into a royal hunting preserve.
