·         OWN AND COUNTRY

·         Today people all over the world are moving out of small villages to go and live in big, noisy cities. They are moving from the peaceful hills, mountains, fields, rivers and streams of the country-side to the busy world of streets, buildings, traffic, and crowds. This movement from rural to urban areas has been going on for over two hundred years. In many countries, the main reason people come to live in towns and cities is work. After one or two large factories have been

·         built in or near a town, people come to find work, and soon an industrial area begins to grow. There is usually aresidential area nearby, where the factory workers can live. The families of these workers need schools, hospitals and shops, so more people come to live in the area to provide these services, and so a city grows.

·         In every major city in the world there is a business district where the big companies have their main offices. In the United States this area is usually in the city centre. It is here that you can see the huge skyscraper office blocks. The people who work here often travel a long way to work each day. Many of them live in the suburbs, far away from the industrial area and the city centre. Some suburbs are very pleasant, with nice houses and big gardens. There are usually parks for children to play in and largedepartment stores where you can buy all you need.

·         But what is the future of the big cities? Will they continue to get bigger and bigger? Perhaps not. Some major cities have actually become smaller in the last ten years, and it is quite possible that one day we will see people moving out of the major cities back into smaller towns and villages.

·         1. What is the main reason why people come to live in cities?

·         2. Why does a city grow ?

·         3. What is there in every major city ?

·         4. Where do many people who work in the centre live?

·         5. What is the future of big cities ?

·         7. Will they continue to get bigger and bigger?

Environmental Problems –

Our environment is constantly changing. This is the fact we cannot deny. The way technological progress influences the environment is not the most favourable.

Today humanity is facing numerous environmental problems. If we do not pay attention to these problems right now, we may face even bigger natural disasters in the future.

Pollution

Pollution is one of the biggest problems. Plants and motor vehicles are number one pollutants. Their harmful emissions pollute the environment. Oil spills and acid rains make the World Ocean dirty.

Global warming

Global warming is the result of human activity. It is characterized by rising temperatures of the oceans and earth’s surface causing rise in sea levels and melting of polar ice cover. Apart from that, floods, desertification and excessive snow are also signs of global warming.

Climate change

Global warming causes the rise of another serious problem, known as climate change. Climate change can lead to the development of other harmful effects in our life, such as occurrence of new diseases and change in seasons.

Deforestation

Today forests cover about 30% of land. Every year this figure decreases more and more. People clear out new territories for residential buildings, new plants and factories. We must realize that deforestation causes the extinction of animals and plants.

Ozone layer depletion

Ozone layer protects our planet from the sun’s harmful rays. Due to atmospheric emissions of the so-called CFC’s, the ozone layer depletes. This results in occurrence of the holes in the ozone layer.

Today CFC’s are banned in many industries. However, we must remember that if this problem is not taken under control, harmful rays of the sun will easily penetrate the atmosphere. The biggest hole in the ozone layer is located above the Antarctic.

The Future - Level 2

I sometimes wonder what life will be like in the future.

Life has changed so much in just the past few years.

I'm sure that there are still big changes that are coming.

Do you think we'll still drive cars?

Maybe we'll get into computerized vehicles that we won't have to drive.

We'll just push a few buttons, and the vehicles will take us to wherever we have to go.

Maybe there won't be roads.

We might just fly through space to get where we want to go.

Instead of telephones, we'll just use our computers.

We'll be able to see each other when we talk.

That type of thing is already happening.

Maybe we won't have to cook our meals.

We might be able to push buttons to order whatever we want.

nice roast beef dinner, or an ice cream sundae, might just pop out of a machine.

It would be nice to have a robot to clean the house for you.

In the past few years, computers have been extremely important.

People used to write to each other through the mail.

Now, people communicate so much more frequently through E-mail.

Most of my friends own computers.

If we had all of these things to do the work for us, what would we do?

We would still need people to program the computers.

We could spend more time being creative, rather than doing everyday chores.

The future holds many surprises.

I'm sure that technology will become even more and more amazing.

When my parents were young, they had never even seen a color television.

Nobody owned a computer.

It doesn't take long for things to change a lot.

Who knows what amazing things are in store for us?

Newspapers /

Newspapers

In the past people learnt about news from newspapers. Nowadays people usually learn what is happening in the country and in the world from TV or radio news programmes or from the Internet. Still we cannot imagine our life without newspapers. There are dozens of them on every news-stand. There are newspapers for professionals, for businessmen, for children and teenagers, for men and women, for sports fans, for those who are interested in gardening and for those who keep pets.

Some newspapers publish serious articles on politics, economy and finance, some aim to entertain their readers. Many newspapers express certain political opinion and people choose them according to their own political beliefs. In short, you can always find a paper which suits your interests. Besides, there are many free local newspapers which are put into your postbox whether you ask for it or not. Probably they are not interesting, because they consist mainly of advertisements, but you can find a lot of useful telephone numbers and addresses there.

My parents subscribe to Argumenty i Facty. I also like this weekly. I don't read all the articles, but in every issue I find something interesting. I think that most articles are very well written, they give a detailed and well-balanced analysis of current events and trends in economy. I like to read articles on social issues, interviews, reviews of new books, plays and TV shows. One of my favourite columns is The Quotation of the Day, where they quote our popular politicians and give their comments. Sometimes it's very funny.

Quite often I buy Sovershenno Secretno (Top Secret) and practically in each issue there are some fascinating stories which you read like a detective story. Sometimes they uncover things I have not heard about, sometimes they show well-known events in a completely new light.

From time to time I read Moskovsky Komsomolets. It's one of the most popular daily papers, but I don't consider it serious. However, I never miss an article written by Minkin. I think he is a very good journalist. I also like Merinov's cartoons. Sometimes they publish good reviews of new films, new CDs and so on. In short, I think that TV, radio and the Internet have their advantages, but nothing can substitute newspapers.

HOW TO WRITE AN ARTICLE

Posted by Managed WordPress Migration User | May 27, 2015 | English Tips | 0  |

This guide is aimed at writing an Article for the Cambridge First Certificate (B2) and Advanced (C1) exams. The advice might not be appropriate for other exams.

In the exam you’ll usually be asked to write an article for a magazine- this means that the style should be fairly informal (no essay words), interesting and creative. The more creative the better. The examiner is looking for you to be able to interest the reader, inform them about something or persuade them to try something.

Here is an example question of an FCE article: You have seen the following notice in an English Language magazine. “How do you keep fit? What are the benefits to doing this?”. Write your article for the magazine in 140-190 words.

Plans For The Weekend

My name is Rita and I’m fourteen years old. I study at the local state school at the eighth form. During the weekdays I attend my school and at weekends I’m busy going out with my friends. However my weekends can be different. A lot depends on how much homework I’m assigned to do and on my parents’ plans. We live very close to the river and my dad sometimes hires a boat for having a relaxing holiday. Of course, we take such trip when the weather is good. I know it sounds unusual but we have a real picnic on a boat. We buy enough food for two days and we fill the boat with certain amount of fuel. It’s nice to be away from the city noise for a couple of days. That’s my dad’s favourite way of spending the weekend. My mum likes spending it at our grandma’s country house. It’s an hour away from the city. The air and water are much cleaner there. In the summer we go to the nearby forest to pick some tasty berries. When I have too much homework to be done for the next week, we normally stay at home. However, when I’m freer I like spending my weekends with my best friends, going to the mall with them, to the cinema or to the pizza place. In the afternoon we can even organize a ping-pong or volleyball championship at the schoolyard. Sometimes we go cycling or hiking. I love weekends with friends. However, the coming weekend will be on a boat. The next one will be in the countryside. We try to make our weekends diverse and interesting, so that everyone is satisfied. And yes, I forgot to mention our cat Quincy. It always accompanies us on our small trips.
