Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov (1814 – 1841) was
a descendant of a Scottish family founded by the poet and prophet Lermontov,
born in Moscow. He was brought up by a stern grandmother, who considered his
father to be the culprit of the death of the future poet's mother and did not
allow them to see each other. At the age of ten, he fell in love for the first
time, which left a mark on the poet's soul for the rest of his life.
Lermontov studied at Moscow University, and
before that at a private boarding school, where he began writing «Demon». Unsuccessful
love was the impetus for the «Ivanovsky» cycle of poems. Getting an education
also faced difficulties. Due to an unpleasant story, the student Lermontov left
the university and entered the school of Guards ensigns.
After receiving the rank, he joined the
Hussars. Possessing status and fortune, Lermontov takes revenge on his once
beloved E. Sushkova, leading a rampant «hussar» life. As a poet, he was almost
unknown until 1837, when his poem «On the Death of a Poet» became famous.
This kind of obituary to A.S. Pushkin became
the reason for the arrest and exile to the Caucasus, where the war with Shamil
was going on. Being in exile changed the poet in many ways. Lermontov writes
«Mtsyri», works of the Caucasian cycle and returns as a well-known writer. It
is published in popular magazines.
The conflict with the son of the French
ambassador led to a duel, because of which Lermontov is again sent to the
active army in the Caucasus. There are different opinions about the reasons for
the quarrel, but the poet's difficult character played an important role.
In the battles with the highlanders, «Michel»,
as his friends called him, showed considerable courage. But a military career
does not attract him. By 1840, «Borodino», «Sail», «Angel», and many other works
were created. The «Hero of Our Time» is finished, where contemporaries saw
Lermontov himself in Pechorin. The poet plans to retire.
However, the plans were not destined to come
true. Retired Major Martynov, who for no particular reason became the object of
ridicule of the bilious «Michel», was provoked to a duel by him. It took place
in Pyatigorsk, and on July 27, 1841, Lermontov was killed.
Emperor Nikolai Pavlovich, on Lermontov's
death, said that «the one who could replace Pushkin died.»
