Past Simple Tense

affirmative:

negative:

interrogative:

Did I/you/we/they/he/she/it make …?
Did you visit this country?	Did she write a test yesterday?

tense indicators: yesterday, last week/month/year/Sunday/morning, an hour ago, a week/month ago

Past Continuous Tense

affirmative:

I/he/she/it was making	You/we/they were making
I was doing my homework	They were playing golf

negative:

I/he/she/it was not making	You/we/they were not making
He was not listening to music	You weren’t singing

interrogative:

Was I/he/she/it making …?	Were you/we/they making …?
Was she sleeping?	Were you painting?

tense indicators: the whole day, all the time, all night/day long, during that time, while … , from … till …

Past Perfect Tense

affirmative:

I/you/we/they/he/she/it had + V3/Ved
I had done my homework before dinner	She had opened the window

negative:

I/you/we/they/he/she/it hadn’t + V3/Ved
We hadn’t come to the party	He hadn’t been to Rome

interrogative:

Had I/you/we/they/he/she/it V3/Ved …?
Had you prepared the project by noon?	Had she written the letter?

tense indicators: by noon/midday/midnight, by that time, by 5 o’clock, by the end of the year

Past Perfect ContinuousTense

affirmative:

I/you/we/they/he/she/it had been making
I had been sleeping all day long	She had been walking for a week

negative:

I/you/we/they/he/she/it hadn’t been making
We hadn’t been talking the whole year	It hadn’t been raining for a month

interrogative:

Had I/you/we/they/he/she/it been making …?
Had you been resting all day long?	Had she been reading for three hours?

tense indicators: for a week/month, for some time, all day long, all the week/month, the whole week/month/year
