Theme: Travelling to different countries

The aims of the lesson: systematization of the pupil’s knowledge

a) educational: To enrich the pupils knowledge giving them more information about countries;

b) developing: To develop memory, logical thinking and developing creative work with new technologies, to provide an opportunity of free speaking.

 c) bringing up: To make an interest to the English-speaking countries, to teach to work creatively, in group.

 

The course of the lesson

I. Organization moment.

 - Hello, children! I am very glad to see you at our lesson. You are welcome to enjoy our lesson!

Позитивный настрой на урок (Учащиеся вытягивают стикеры c комплиментами и делают пожелание соседу, используя жесты). Say one compliment to your classmate! (деление на группы, в зависимости от цвета стикера)

 

II. Theme of the lesson. Aims of the lesson

Now please, look at  this list of words. Cross out the odd word in each line.

1.    Nick, Tom, English, Alice, Mike.

2.    Aunt, uncle, speaking, sister, brother.

3.    Astana, London, countries, Washington, Canberra.

 Yes, today we will speak about countries, their flags and nationalities . What is the theme of our lesson?

 Yes, it is “English-speaking countries”.

Aims of the lesson.

-What do you know at the lesson? Answers of the pupils (to know some new information about English-speaking countries).

III. Warm up

Let's remember some English proverbs and then try to guess their Russian and Kazakh equivalents. Repeat after me, please. Match Russian, English and Kazakh proverbs and complete the chart.

1. East or West - home is best. -
В гостях хорошо, а дома лучшеҚонақта жақсы, үйде өте жақсы.

2. So many countries so many customs. - Сколько стран, столько и обычаевҚанша мемлекет, сонша дәстүр.

3. Every country has its customs. - У каждой страны свои обычаи. Әр мемлекеттің, өз дәстүрі бар.

-Before we are going to speak about the theme of our lesson, let’s remember the grammar theme “Articles”.

IV. Main part of the lesson

“So many countries…..”

-What English-Speaking countries do you know? (answers of the pupils - the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand).

- First of all, let`s speak about the UK. What do you know about this city? You should write some facts about this countries in your copybooks. (individually work).

- Next task: you should divide your information between you and your neighbor.

- You should make a cluster. (учащиеся составляют кластер, о своих знаниях о Великобритании и представляют  свои работы).

VII. Presentation of pupil’s projects “English-Speaking Countries” 

- Your home task was to prepare projects. Let`s talk about their flags, emblems, symbols, dates and statistics. We shall listen to three groups-three projects. Get ready to ask the questions to your classmates and share your ideas about Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Who will be the first to speak today? You should listen to her carefully and be ready to answer the questions.

It is the sixth largest country and the smallest continent in the world. The population of the country is 22 million people.

Australia is located in the southern hemisphere. That is why it has summer when we have winter and it has winter when we have summer. It is interesting to know that January is the hottest month in Australia.

The capital of Australia is Canberra, which became the capital only in 1927. But there are another main cities such as Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth.

There are Australian animals – kangaroo, platypus [ˈplætɪpəs], koala, dingo, echidna, ostrich, cockatoo.

The building of the Sydney Opera House is one of the greatest architectural monuments today. It is the work of Danish architect Jorn Utzon. It is officially opened in October 1973. The idea of the architect was to create a building resembling blown by wind sails. By popularity Opera House is among the world biggest landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Egyptian pyramids.

-Where are you going to?

- I am going to my best friend.

- What’s his name?

- He’s Jill.

- Is he from another country?

- Yes, right you are. He’s from New Zealand, Wellington. Do you know that Wellington is the capital of New Zealand since 1865?

- Yes. I know. I also know that New Zealand is a small and quiet country in the Pacific Ocean. It consists of two main islands and some smaller islands. New Zealand is the name of the country that has volcanoes, mountains, tropical forests and rivers of ice.

- What can you say about the weather in New Zealand?

- When it’s winter in New Zealand, it’s summer in Europe. So, sometimes this country name as an upside down country). But I don’t know nothing about the population.

- Oh, I know. The population of the country is about 4 million people and its mixed. Some people came from Britain years ago. Some Maori people lived here before the British came. The official languages are English and Maori.

- What is the symbol of the country?

- The kiwi is now the symbol of New Zealand. Kiwi is the interesting bird comes out only at night to find food. Kiwis cannot fly.

- What are you going to visit in New Zealand?

- I’m going to enjoy the nature because it’s beautiful country. And also I want to visit The Sky Tower in Auckland. it’s the highest free-standing structure of the country. People can see up to 80 km away being at its top. There is also a nice revolving restaurant in the Orbit of the Tower.

- Well, you are lucky. Good bye then.

- Bye!

3. Let’s listen to the last story about Canada. (3 группа рассказывает о Канаде).

Canada is situated on the North American continent. In size Canada is the second in the world after Russia. It is washed by the Pacific Ocean in the west, by the Atlantic Ocean in the east and by the Arctic Ocean and its seas in the north. That is why the climate and the nature of Canada are much varied.

The capital is Ottawa; the main cities are Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. The population of the country is about 30 million people. Official languages of Canada are English and French.

Canada is often called the “Land of the Maple Leaf”. The maple leaf is the national emblem of Canada. The national winter sport of Canada is Ice-hockey. The earliest mention of the team ice hockey game was in Montreal in 1875. Some years later it became very popular in many countries in the world.

Canada is known for its mammals such as American bison, Arctic hare, beaver, black bear, coyote, grizzly bears, gray wolf, red fox, lemming, meadow mice and many others.

 

VIII. Game “Jeopardy Game”.

Thank you, pupils. Now let’s remember everything and answer the questions and play “Jeopardy Game”.   I am sure you like to watch this game on TV and know its rules.
