Good morning my dear students!
I’m glad to see you!
Today we’ll have an unusual lesson.
We are going to know about world
famous breeder who gave us more then 200 kind of the incomparable English
garden roses.
His name is David Austin, who is an
ornament of the human race.
Incredible David Austin and his
English roses.
I suppose many people know the name
of the legendary breeder who gave us the incomparable English garden roses.
His name is David Austin.
In England, the talented gardeners
are called the Green Fingers.
David Austin was born in 1926 in to
a family of farmers and from early childhood he began to help his parents with
the housework, worked hard and could earn his living as a child. At that time
the life of farmers was far from easy and it was difficult to earn money. This
is probably why when David at the age of 14 decided to grow roses.
And of course, no one of the Austin
family had any idea that one day the hobby of growing roses would become a
serious business of David's life and grow into a full-fledged business. No one
would have thought that a passionate breeder would be able to achieve great
success, and the Queen herself would choose flowers in his nursery.
David
Austin's Rose Garden is located three hundred kilometers from London, on the
outskirts of the charming small town of Albrighton. Every year, David Austin's
nursery attracts flower growers from all over the world, many traveling
thousands of miles to visit the homeland of English roses. There are more than
700 varieties of roses in the garden, in fact, this is not one, but four
gardens, each of which is designed in a certain style.
The Long
Garden, or The Long Garden, is the largest of the four. In the plan, these are
three longitudinal paths with paired borders, separated by rustic, emphasized
rough wooden pergolas and a network of transverse paths. The central walkway is
made of bricks, finished with cobblestones, and ends at the sculpture of three
dancing girls. On both sides of it there are long narrow borders with old and
English roses, as well as some scrubs and ground cover roses. The other two
paths are made of grass, they are also surrounded by paired borders. A focal
point is located at the end of each track. It can be either a view of the next
garden or a sculpture. The flower beds are edged with low trimmed yew borders.
Around the sculpture of dancing girls at the end of the garden is a beautiful
round pergola along the perimeter.
Turning left, we find ourselves in
the Victorian Garden or Victorian Garden. It is a garden round in shape,
consisting of three concentric borders, the outer one is the widest, and the inner
ones taper towards the center. Each border, as if by the spokes of a wheel, is
divided by grass paths converging in the center, where there is a sculpture of
a woman with a bouquet of roses. The garden is surrounded by a sheared hedge
along the perimeter. The garden is an example of classic modern regular design.
Returning to
The Long Garden and reaching the previous turn, we find ourselves in the
Renaissance Garden, or Renaissance Garden, which we have already glimpsed. This
is perhaps the most luxurious garden of the four, a kind of visiting card, a
work of art, as Austin himself proudly calls it. Like The long Garden, the
garden is divided into three sections. Entering the garden, we see a long
rectangular reservoir resembling a canal, about one and a half meters wide,
with a wide stone edging, lined with English roses, reflecting in the water. At
the far end of the reservoir is a dolphin sculpture. Behind him is a stone
"loggia", something like a summer terrace, from which you can enjoy a
beautiful view. Behind the roses by the pool, on both sides, there are wide
paths of grass, edged with "serpentine" borders with unusual, winding
edges. The edges are accentuated by sheared boxwood. At the end of each path,
there is a sculpture facing the loggia. In each "bend" of the border,
one variety of English rose grows. For these boarders, low varieties were
selected, which are cut quite low here. This planting allows visitors to
evaluate the varieties and choose the one suitable for their garden. The columns
of the loggia are entwined with tall varieties of English roses.
Behind the
serpentine boarders is a low clipped hedge, behind which you can see the
"outer" part of the garden. This is a completely different landing
plan, more free and informal. Roses are planted in large tracts, with a winding
grass path passing through them, so that it seems that you are surrounded by a
sea of roses. The photo of this particular part of the garden is usually
associated with the garden of David Austin. / This type of garden is probably
the most famous. / On the other side of the loggia, behind the same hedge,
there is a long pergola with climbing and English roses.
In 1990,
David invited his eldest son, David J. Austin, to his business. Together they
founded the world famous brand David Austin Roses Ltd
David Austin
is an ingenious breeder and will forever be remembered as one of the most
famous not only in Great Britain, but throughout the world, and the very
concept of "English roses" has long been associated with his name,
which has become a real brand.
