An intangible asset is something that cannot readily be seen or touched.
Examples
of intangible assets include leaseholds, copyrights, franchises and patents and
goodwill. In order for these items to classify as assets they must
be
owned ( or the rights of use must be owned ) and they must have money
value.
A leasehold is the right of a tenant to use and occupy real property under
a
lease. A copyright is the exclusive right to use and control a literary or
artistic
work. A franchise and a patent are rights given by a company to conduct a
certain type of business in a specific area. These rights are purchased.
Goodwill usually represents the reputation and the managerial skill of
a
business. Goodwill is usually recognized by the buyer of a business as
the
excess paid for the business above the value of the tangible value
acquired.

Basically,
goods may be sold for cash or on credit. Competition (конкуренция) among sellers
really determines whether an item is to be offered for sale for cash or on
credit. Where credit is extended on sales, the terms given the buyer are stated
on the sales invoice.Such terms (means and methods of payment allowed ) are
calculated from the date of invoice. Thus the obligation may be due the seller
within 30, 60, 90 or more days of the invoice date. The terms offered usually
depend on the custom of the trade. In some situations invoices become due and
payable 10 days after the end of the month in which the sale occurred.

Inventory of a manufacturer is composed of three groups: raw materials
to
be used in the product, partially finished goods in process of manufacture,
and
finished goods ready for sale to customers. The generally accepted method
of
valuation of the inventory is cost or market, whichever is lower.
Where
this method is used, the value for balance sheet purposes will be cost,
or
perhaps less than cost if, as a result of deterioration, decline in prices, or
other factors, less than cost can be realized on the inventory

The inventory of a
trading business consists of goods on hand and available
for sale to the customer. The inventory
available at the beginning of the accounting period is known as beginning
inventory.Merchandise inventory
on hand at the end of the accounting
period is known as ending inventory.
The beginning inventory figure is
necessary in order to determine the cost
of goods available for sale.
Inventory systems used by trading
businesses may be either on a periodic
Basis ( usually taken once a year ) or a
perpetual ( постоянный ) basis ( usually
taken almost daily ). The choice of system
depends on the kinds of products sold
and the specific information needed.
Companies that sell a great quantity of
items, such as department stores, keep
track of their stock by using the periodic
inventory method. The value of this
inventory is calculated by multiplying the
quantity of each item by its unit cost.
A total cost figure for all the inventory
is then determined by adding the total costs of all kinds of merchandise in the
inventory.
Whether the periodic or the perpetual
inventory system is used, it is necessary
to use a specific method for determining
costs of the ending inventory. Since goods are usually purchased at different
costs during the accounting period
the determination of cost can become a
rather complex procedure.
The beginning point used in determining
the value of the ending inventory is
the cost – flow assumption. The most
generally used cost – flow assumption are
FIFO and the weighted average.
