What
do British Teens do in their Free Time?
Teenagers in Britain do much the
same as kids in the USA or any other European country do. They enjoy surfing
the Internet, chatting to and texting friends on their mobiles, hanging out
with their mates, listening to the latest music on their MP3 players,
shopping for the latest fashions or just watching movies on TV or at the
cinema.
However, according to a survey
conducted on recent years, British 15-year-olds are drunk more often and
involved in more fights than German, French and Italian youngsters.
This can be explained by how they spend their free time. In England,
for instance, 45% of 15-year-old boys spend most evenings out with their
friends, and in Scotland the figure is 59%. In France just 17% of boys spend
their time in the same way. Moreover, British teenagers are
also more immersed into consumerism than other European and American
teenagers. From Billabong to Adidas, to Abercrombie & Fitch, British
youngsters are very label conscious. They spend a lot of their free time (and
pocket money!) shopping around for clothes and gadgets they don’t really
need.
According to another study, the
Internet is British teenagers’ favourite hobby. They spend an
average of 31 hours a week online – some three and a half hours communicating
with friends on MSN, and around two hours on YouTube and in chat rooms. Just
over an hour is devoted to looking up cosmetic surgery procedures, an hour
and a half is spent on family planning and pregnancy websites and one hour 35
minutes is spent investigating diets and weight loss.
One in four teenagers
of the 1,000 polled said they regularly spoke to strangers online but thought
it harmless and one in three admitted trying to hide what they were looking at
if a parent entered the room. But the study also showed that children also
use the Internet to help them with homework, with at least three hours a week
spent searching for such information.
