Занесите свои ответы в таблицу. Один заголовок лишний.
20TH CENTURY
FASHION
1. Before the First World War fashions
didn’t change very quickly. Men wore dark suits. They had short hair and
moustaches were popular. Women wore long dresses and they had long hair. Under
their dresses they wore stiff corsets. These gave women a very narrow waist,
but they were very uncomfortable.
2. In the Roaring Twenties dresses and hair
became much shorter. People saw women’s knees for the first time! Corsets
disappeared. A straight figure with no waist was fashionable. For men trousers
with very wide legs became fashionable. They were called Oxford bags.
3. In the 30th and 40th
hair, dresses and coats became longer again. Men’s fashion didn’t change very
much. Men wore a suit, a tie and usually a hat, too. Moustaches were less
popular.
4. In the 1950s people were richer and
teenagers spent a lot of money on clothes. For men this was age of a teddy boy.
Teddy boys wore long jackets in very bright colours – pink, orange or yellow –
and very tight trousers. For women jumpers and blouses with wide skirts and
short socks were the fashion.
Both men and women wore shoes with long pointed toes. The women’s shoes had
high heels.
5. The
1960s saw a revolution in clothes. Everything changed. This was the time of the
mini- skirt and long boots. For the first time in the twentieth century men had
long hair – the famous Beatle haircut.
6. In
the late 1960s and the early 70th the hippy “flower power” style was
in. Women were long maxi-skirts. Men wore jeans and brightly coloured shirts or
T-shirts. Clothes were very colourful. Very long hair was fashionable for men
and women, and beards became more common (only for men, of course).
7. The 80s brought teenagers with punk hair
styles in red, blue, purple and green and brightly coloured make up.

The Earl of Sandwich lived long ago in England. He was a
fanatic about playing cards. He didn’t even want to stop playing long enough to
eat a meal and refused to put his cards away. So his servant invented a quick
meal for him. He put some meat between two slices of bread, so that the Earl
could hold his meal in one hand and play cards with the other.
Sandwiches were
great favourites in Victorian England. It was a
tradition to take an afternoon tea at 5o’clock, and many rich families ate sandwiches at that time. Cucumber sandwiches were very popular. The
servants always cut the crusts off the bread, so the sandwiches were very small
and delicate. Sandwiches are less elegant now and often much bigger. The
English eat millions of sandwiches every day. They are a typical ‘snack’ meal
because they are easy and quick to prepare. You can buy sandwiches if you don’t
want to make them yourself. There are thousands of sandwich bars and cafes and
even some restaurants that sell them.

Аудиотекст 2
Queen Elizabeth II wakes
up at 7 o`clock, has a cup of tea and reads the Times. Then she has a bath and
gets dressed. At 8 o`clock she listens to BBC news and has breakfast with
Prince Philip. After breakfast she reads personal letters and has an important
business consultation with Private Secretary and then works at government
documents. At 1 o`clock she has a quick lunch in her private apartment in Buckingham
Palace and at 2 o`clock leaves the Palace to open a new hospital. There she
makes speeches, shakes hands and has a cup of tea. At 4.45 she is back at the
Palace and works in her office. At 5.30 she receives foreign visitors and then
has the final meeting with her Private Secretary. In the evening she goes to
St. James Palace where she has a reception party and talks with 70 people. Then
she goes back to the palace and at 8.30 has dinner with Philip and a group of
some businessmen. At 10 o`clock she watches television news and then reads some
official papers and telephones some members of the Royal Family – just to see
if all is well. At about 11 o`clock she goes to bed.
