Theme: This is my family.

Grade: 1st “B”

Time: 45 minutes

Objectives:

Educational:

  • To learn how to ask and answer the questions (revision of the previous material)

  • to learn the names of the family members and practise structures “ This is…” , “Her/his name is…”

  • to learn gender category (new possessive pronouns: his,her).

Developing:

  • to enable pupils to ask and answer the questions

  • to enable pupils to say family members and to use gender category properly

  • to develop listening, speaking, reading skills

Socio-cultural:

  • to raise awareness of family members and gender category

  • to raise awareness of the pronunciation of the sounds [^] , [æ], [3:]

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • ask and answer the learnt questions

  • name the family members

  • make up sentences about their families members using structure “ This is…”

  • to use gender category properly

  • pronounce the sounds [^] , [æ], [3:]

Vocabulary and structure:

This is… , family, mother, father, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather, my, his/ her.

Interaction: plenary, individual work, pair work,

Resources: DVD or PC, a CD with a video “ My family”, handouts, photos or pictures of a family ( For optional activities: scissors, sheets of paper).

Procedure:

  1. Greeting ( 1-2 minutes)

  2. Warming – up. ( 6 minutes)

Activity1. Play “Interview”.

Objective:

  • to refresh the language material of the previous units

Ask one pupil to become a reporter and give him or her a marker, it will be a microphone. He or she walks around the classroom and asks classmates the learnt questions: What’s your name? How are you? How old are you? Where do you live?. Then another pupil can become a reporter. So, the teacher can ask some pupils to consolidate the language material of the previous units.

III. Main part.

  1. Pre-activity: 8 minutes

Activity 4 Look , listen and say.

Objectives:

  • to introduce new words

  • to practice new words pronunciation

Step1. Show the pupils a picture of a family and ask them to tell what they can see in the picture. Give them opportunity to speak in L1.

Step2. Then show the pupils cards with the names of the family members. Say the name of each member and ask pupils to repeat them afterwards. Encourage weak pupils and praise those who pronounce the words correctly.

  1. While-activity: 8-10 minutes

Activity 5 Watch, listen and sing.

Objectives:

  • To watch the video and to sing the song

  • To practice new words and structure “This is…”

Step1. Ask to watch the video and to listen the song “My family”. Tell them that they will sing it afterwards. Give opportunity to watch and listen the song two or three times.

Step2. Enable the pupils to sing a song altogether.

Step3. Hand the pupils worksheets and ask them to look them through. 3. Post-activity: 15 -18 minutes

Activity 6. Listen and say.

Tell the poem about pronouns to the pupils and then enable them to repeat it line by line. You can also say only L1 part and they try to remember and say what it is in English. It’s not necessary to learn the poem by heart. They only should remember the pronouns his and her:

Poem:

Сочиняем мы стихи:

он - по-английски будет HE,

И знают даже малыши, что она - это SHE

Ты скорей дружок узнай что мой, мояэто MY

Дорог нам такой сюрприз, что его будет - HIS

А её будет – HER.

Ask children to tell the difference between the pronouns his and her. (if they can’t, explain it yourself as in Uzbek there is no gender category).

Note: You can write the poem on the blackboard as some pupils already can read in the 1st grade to enable pupils to read themselves.

Activity 7. Show and say.

Objectives:

  • To practise gender category and structure Her /his name is…

  • To develop pupils’ reading and speaking skills

Ask pupils to bring their family pictures or photos to the class. Bring yours as well. At first tell the pupils about your family starting with: This is my family. This is my mother. Her name is ……., This is my father. His name is……., This is my sister Her name is…….., This is my brother. His name is …… . Then ask any volunteer to come to the blackboard and tell about his/her family. With first three or four pupils do it together, to others give opportunity to do it themselves helping them in pronunciation.

( For this step you can use another optional activity: Show the pupils picture or a photo of a family and remind them family names: father, mother, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather. Then show the class how to make a chain by folding the paper to the width of the model, drawing around the template and cutting out carefully to avoid breaking the chain. ( see handout 4). Ask children to make their chains and elicit who is who. Do your family chain as well and then tell the pupils about your family starting with: This is my family. This is my mother. Her name is ……., This is my father. His name is……., This is my sister Her name is…….., This is my brother. His name is …… . Then ask any volunteer to come to the blackboard and tell about his/her family. With first three or five pupils do it together, to others give opportunity to do it themselves helping them in pronunciation.)

Activity 8. “ Let me introduce my family”

Objectives:

  • To use family names and gender category

  • To develop pupils’ speaking skills

Ask pupils to stand up and to go around the class with their families’ photos or pictures. Ask them to introduce their family members and tell their names using gender category to the classmates. Enable them to pronounce the words correctly monitoring around the class.

( In optional activity pupils go around the class with their family chains and introduce their families in the same way)

Notes for the teacher: Think about the space for this activity beforehand.

IV. Giving homework: 1 minute

Ask pupils to practise structures This is my……, Her/his name is…… using the photo or a picture of their families. ( or they can use their family chains). And colour
