There are four seasons in (1)…  year: (2)…spring, (3)…summer, (4)…autumn and

(5)… winter. Every season is beautiful in its own way.

(6)…autumn begins in September.  (7)…   days become  shorter and

(8)… nights  become longer. The leaves turn yellow, red and brown and fall to

(9)…  ground. Most birds fly away to (10)…  warm countries. There’s a short spell of

time when (12)…  sky is cloudless, (13)…  trees around are golden, (14)…  air

is transparent and it’s still warm. But gradually it gets colder and colder. It often rains

in (15)…  October and (16)…  November  which  makes   (17)…  autumn

(18) …  unpleasant season.

In (19)…winter the sun sets early and rises late.  The rivers and lakes are frozen

Millions of  (1)…  people  all over (2)…  world spend their holidays travelling.

They travel to see (3)… other countries, (4)…  modern cities and (5)…  ruins of

CLIMATE AND WEATHER IN GREAT BRITAIN

(1)   …  climate in Great Britain is (2)…mild  and  temperate  due to (3)…  influence of

              (4)…  Gulf Stream.

The British often say :”Other countries have (5)… climate; in England we

have (6)…  weather. (7)… weather in Britain is very changeable. A fine morning

can change into a wet afternoon and evening. And  a nasty morning can change to a fine afternoon. That’s why it is  natural for (8)… British to use  the comparison “as changeable as (9)…  weather” of  (10) …  person who often changes his mood or opinion about something.

(11)…  British also say that they have  (12)…  three variants of (13)…  weather:

when it rains in (14)… morning, when it rains in (15)…  afternoon  or when it rains all  (16)…day long.

(17)…  weather is  (18)…  favourite  conversational topic in  (19)… England.

When two Englishmen meet, their first words will be “How do you do?”  or

“How are you?” And after the reply “Very well, thank you; how are you?”

(20)…  next remark is almost certain to be about (21)…  weather. When they go abroad (21)…  British often surprise people of other nationalities by  this  tendency

to talk about  (22)…  weather, (23)…  topic of conversation that other people do not find so interesting.

(5)…the best time of the year in Britain is (6)… spring.

                   (7) …  two worst months in Britain are (8)… January and (9)…  February.

at (11) …  home by the big fire.

(12)…  summer months are rather cold and there can be a lot of rainy days.

This is extremely bad in big cities and especially in London.

The fog spreads everywhere, it is in the streets and it creeps into the houses.

(21)…  cars move along slowly, but still streets (22)… accidents are frequent  in

OLYMPIC GAMES

The Olympic Games have (1)… very long history. They began in 777 BC in (2)…  Greece

All (6)…  cities in (7)…  Greece sent their best athletes to (8)…  Olympia to compete

 MASS MEDIA

The mass media plays (1)…  important part in our lives. Newspapers, radio and especially TV inform us of what is going on in this world and  give us  wonderful  possibilities for

(2)... education and (3)…  entertainment. They also influence the way we see (4)…  world.

It is true that (5)…  world today is full of (6)… dramatic events and  most news seems to be bad news. But people aren’t interested in (7)…  ordinary events. That is why there are so many (8)…  programmes  and (9)…  articles about  natural disasters, plane crashes, wars, murders and robberies.  (10)…  good news doesn’t usually make  headlines. Bad  news does.

The main source of (11)… news for millions of people  is television. People like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that’s (12)…  important advantage.

Seeing, as we know, is believing. Besides, it’s much more difficult for (13)…  politicians to lie in front of (14)…  cameras  than on (15)…  pages  of newspapers.

Still, many people prefer (16)…  radio. It’s good to listen to it in (17)…  car,   or in the open air, or when you do something about (18)…  house.

The Internet has recently become another important source of (19)…  information.

Its main advantage is that  (20)…  news appears on (21)…  screen as soon as things happen in  (22)…  real life and you don’t have to wait for (23)…  news  time on TV.

CAN WE LIVE LONGER?

Scientists say that in (1)…  future people will live longer. With healthier lifestyles and better medical care (2)... average person will live to 90 or 100 instead of 70 and 75 like today. When (3)…  human genome is decoded, we’ll probably live up to 150.

But that’s tomorrow. And today, we continue to stuff ourselves with (4)… fast food ---

 OUR PLANET EARTH

The planet Earth is only (1)…  tiny part of (2)…  universe, but  it’s  (3)…  only place where human being can live.

Today, our planet is in (4)…  serious danger. Acid rains, global warming, air  and water pollution, overpopulation are (5)…  problems  that threaten human on Earth.

Who is to blame for (6)…  disaster?   The answer is simple: all of us.

Our forests are disappearing because they are cut down or burnt. If this trend continues, one day we won’t have enough oxygen to breathe.

(7)…  seas are in danger. They are filled with (8)…  poison: (9)… industrial and nuclear

Air pollution is another serious problem. In Cairo just  breathing (15)… the air is dangerous

---  equivalent to smoking  two packs of (16)… cigarettes a day.  The same holds true for many
