1. Transportation is a major contributor to air pollution in
the United States and nearly half of all Americans are breathing unhealthy air.
Air quality in dozens of metropolitan areas
has become worse over the last decade. In addition, car
collisions kill 1.2 million people worldwide each
year, and injure about forty times as many.
2. Man has dreamed of flying since pre-historic times. Many
ancient stories involve the idea of flight, including the

da Vinci drew an aircraft in the 15th century, but it was not until the mid-18th

Amelia Earhart was a pioneer of air travel. She was the first
woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and the first woman to fly solo
across the North American continent and back. In 1937, Earhart attempted to fly
around the world. Sadly, she disappeared over the Pacific Ocean and was never
seen again.

Some people believe that Ferdinand Verbiest
built the first steam-powered automobile in around 1672, but it was
Swiss inventor Francois Isaac de Rivaz who designed the first
internal combustion engine and used it to power a vehicle. In
1885, Karl Benz developed an automobile powered by a gas engine,
and he is generally thought to be the inventor of the modern automobile.

Concorde was the more successful of only two supersonic passenger
airliners ever to have operated commercially. The plane was first flown in
1969, and Concorde service began in 1976. On 10 April 2003, British
Airways and Air France announced they quit using Concorde, but the plane is
still an icon of aviation history.

Hydrogen cars may eventually be produced that
can be powered without exhausting energy resources. However, the
cars may not be as efficient as today's vehicles. A simpler and more efficient
solution may become developing of electric-powered
vehicles on batteries. The electricity for these vehicles can be produced from
solar, water or wind-generated energy.
