My
name is David. Last summer I lived in the village with my granny and grandpa.
There
is a big forest and a river near our village.
Every
day my friends and I went to the river. We swam and played with a ball on the
green grass.
One
day in July we got up at 6 o’clock in the morning and went to the forest. There
were many mushrooms and berries in the forest. We picked flowers, gathered
berries and mushrooms.
Suddenly
one of the boys stopped and said, “Look! What is this?”
We
ran up to him and saw a small fox baby under a big tree. It was very nice and
funny. “Where is your mother, baby?” we asked him.
We
took the fox baby home. We gave him fish and meat. He grew up quickly. We named
him “July”. July liked to play with us. We were friends.

The
girl’s letter
Hi,
friends. My name is Jessie. I live in Suffolk. I think it’s the sunniest county
in England.
Right now
spring is nearly over. I like these long days. You can do so much. The sky is
blue, the trees are green. In England spring starts in February. The parks and
gardens are so colourful, with white and yellow daffodils and red tulips.
The grass is
green all year round. My favourite tree is the magnolia. The big white flowers
look so beautiful.
Summer is
sometimes really warm in Suffolk. It’s very sunny and bright. My neighbours
grow fantastic roses of all colours: red, pink, white, yellow and even
blue!
I love going
to the seaside in summer. I sit down with a book and enjoy the fresh sea air.
In July we can even swim in the sea, but usually it’s very cold.
Autumn is a
beautiful season, too, with clear sky and red and yellow leaves. But I don’t
really like late autumn. The days are short and it often rains.
In winter
there’s usually no snow, but sometimes we have a white Christmas. The
temperature is usually warm, but it can be cold with the strong wind and rain.
1. In England spring starts in February.
2. In England the grass is always green.
3. The sea in England is always warm.

Edinburgh
I’m from Edinburgh.
It’s
the biggest Scottish city and also it is capital, but Scotland is part of
the United Kingdom now. Much of Edinburgh is very old, but it is also
a beautiful and modern city. Its streets aren’t always clean, but the air is
nice and fresh and there are lots of flowers and trees with blossoms in the
city. We’ve also got a lot of very interesting modern building and our old
university is one of the best in the country. The most famous part of the city
is, of course, the Royal Mile in the Old Town. People from all over the world
visit it. There are little shops, cafes, restaurants and a lot of museums
there. At nights tourists can go on excursions underground and see the small
houses of the poorest people from a different time, but I don’t recommend them.
These excursions are very scary.
The
most beautiful place is Edinburgh Castle. It stands on a large rock. Castle
visitors learn a lot about the history of Edinburgh and get great views of the
Old Town and the rest of the city.
Edinburgh
is famous for its annual (ежегодный)
festival. It is the largest arts festival in the world. Theatre companies and
actors from different countries come to dance, sing and perform in Edinburgh’s
theatres and streets. The festival is always in the month of August, so come
and visit us then.

Food from around the world
We eat a lot of different kinds
of food today. Before the 16th century, people in Europe didn't have a lot of
the things that we can eat and drink every day.
At the end of the 15th century, people
from Europe started to travel to other parts of the world. They went to
America, Africa and Asia. They brought back a lot of new kinds
of food.
Chocolate came from Mexico. The
Aztecs there drank chocolate with pepper! The Spanish brought chocolate to
Europe and they were first to put sugar in it. Until the 1870s, chocolate was
only a drink. The Swiss made the first bar of chocolate in 1876.
Tomatoes, peppers and avocados all
came from Mexico, too. The Spanish took seeds back to Spain and started
to grow the plants there. Soon they spread to other countries
in Europe and then to other parts of the world. The words tomato, chocolate and
avocado all come from the old Aztec language.
Potatoes came from South America.
Potatoes like cold, wet weather. They grew in the mountains of Peru. Coffee
came from Africa. The Turks took it to Turkey and then to Europe. Tea came from
China in the 17th century. At first it was very expensive and only
rich people drank it, but in the 19th century the British started to grow tea
in India. They produced a lot, so it was cheap and everybody could
drink it.

A Faithful Friend
This is a story about a small dog. People in
Britain love dogs and like to read dog stories, but this is a true story.
Bobby was a
terrier with long hair. Terriers are very small, but they are brave and clever.
Bobby was a brave dog and there is a statue to him in Edinburgh — the capital
of Scotland.
Bobby and his master lived in the country near
Edinburgh about a hundred years ago. Bobby’s master was a farmer. Bobby helped
him to look after the sheep.
When Bobby’s master was very old, he went to
live in Edinburgh. But he left the dog on the farm with the new master. Bobby
loved his old master very much and soon he ran away and went to the city to
find his old friend. He looked here and there and ran along the streets of the
city and at last he found his master. The man was poor and ill. Bobby stayed
with his friend. He often went with his master to a café and Mr. Trail, the
owner of it, always had some food for the little dog.
Soon Bobby’s master died and people did not see
the dog for some time. Then one day Mr. Trail saw Bobby near his café and gave
him some food. Bobby took the food and ran away. The dog came to the café five
or six times. He took the food that Mr. Trail gave him but did not eat it. He
ran away with it in his mouth. One day Mr. Trail went after Bobby and came to
the cemetery. There he found the dog on the grave of his master. Bobby stayed
there every day in good and bad weather. He sat under a big stone when it
rained and Mr. Trail came and gave him food there.
But soon some people began to ask questions.
Why did the dog live in the cemetery? Did he have a master? Did he have a
collar? They wrote these questions on a paper and gave the paper to the mayor
of Edinburgh. The mayor liked dogs and decided to help brave little Bobby. He
himself bought Bobby a collar with the dog’s name on it, and gave the dog “the
freedom of the city” which they gave only to very important people. After that
Bobby lived in Edinburgh for many years. People came to see the dog in the
cemetery and children played with him. All the people in Edinburgh knew the dog
and loved him.
When Bobby died, they put up a statue on
his grave with his name and dates. Bobby’s collar is now in the museum.

Music in the Streets
As
you go home after a hard day’s work, and you get off the metro train, you
sometimes have to walk a long way to the exit or to change trains. Suddenly in
the noise, some music is heard. Those are street musicians. You take out a coin
from your pocket and throw it into their hat or instrument case. These
musicians bring color and life to the city streets. Street musicians are aged
between 17 and 30 years. Some of them are men, some women. They play classical
music, pop or folk music, old and new songs. Many musicians are former
university students or professional musicians.
Andrew
Hain, for example, was once a music student, but he gave up music and became a
painter. Now he plays in the underground because he doesn’t want to forget how
to play. His girlfriend is a painter, too. She helps him to collect the money.
Another street musician, David MacNell, tells new players:
“Learn
new songs all the time, or else you’ll have fewer and fewer listeners. Wear
bright clothes to attract attention. Make sure that the places where you choose
to play are warm. The best places are bridges and certainly the underground.”
On
Sundays, Hyde Park is the best place, as the speakers here address the people.
The street musicians are doing their business with the many tourists who visit
the park. The weather is one of the worst problems. It is not so easy to play
the violin or the guitar on a rainy November day in London and try to smile.
A
much worse problem is the police. From time to time, they come, and the
musicians are moved to a different place. True, they are not often fined. One
musician told me:
“The
policeman asked me what I was doing. I said I was just practising. Some money
just fell out of my pocket into the guitar case, and I was told to leave my
place. I think it’s not fair. People love street music. It makes the city more
attractive.”

- WHY DOES EACH HURRICANE HAVE A NAME?
- WHAT DO THE HURRICANE CATEGORIES MEAN?
- WHAT ARE HURRICANES?
- WHAT HAPPENS LATER?
- CAN WE DO ANYTHING TO STOP THEM?
- HOW DO THEY OCCUR?
Hurricanes
It was supposed to hit
the coast of Florida. But hurricane Isaac changed the course midway It directed
its fury towards the three Gulf states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
A. Hurricanes
also known as cyclones in some parts of the world, are super powerful storms.
They gain strength from winds that help them blow at speeds ranging from 75 to
225 miles per hour, resulting in massive destruction when they hit land. When a
hurricane first begins, the rising winds blow in towards the centre of the
storm. While the cane is attempting to go straight, the Earth’s movement causes
it to turn to the right, forcing it to go counterclockwise.
B. For
hurricanes to occur, the ocean temperatures must be at least 80Fahrenheit and
the atmosphere around it, full of moisture. Also, the winds must be blowing in
the same speed to force the air upward from the surface of the ocean. The warm
water creates low-pressure air, causing it to rises, it collects moisture-forming
thunderclouds. The warm air produces more heat and rises faster, causing colder
air to rush in. This increases the intensity of the storm. This water is the
most deadly part of the hurricane, because it dumps into any landmass it hits,
causing floods and devastation.
C. Hurricanes
are given names, so that scientists can track the storms from start to finish.
In the fifties, hurricanes were named after the phonic alphabet, like Able,
Baker etc. From 1953 to 1979, the US Weather Bureau decided to shift to only
women’s names. Since then, they have chosen between male and female names and
now have six different name lists that the change each year. If a hurricane
causes real major devastation, like Katrina did to New Orleans in 2005 the name
is never used again.
D. In
the past, scientist tried various inventions to weaken these storms. But they
gave up in the 1960’s after realizing that the weather patterns were too large
to affect. Instead, they changed their focus to understanding how hurricanes
form and move, so that they could predict the time and intensity with greater
accuracy. But like other acts of nature, this too remains an inexact science
that is neither completely predictable nor controllable.
E. The
hurricane categories range from 1 to 5. It is a way to measure their intensity,
with 5 being the worst. A typical season sees about six hurricanes, the peak of
the season is not until the end of September. The good news is that Isaac is
the fourth hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic season – the first three did not land
on the US soil. So maybe the USA will escape the rest too, which would make
this the best hurricane season Americans have had in many year.

1. HELP TO SUPPORTERS OF HOME EDUCATION
2. THE ORIGIN OF EO
3. THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM
4. DIFFICULTY TO SUIT SCHOOL SYSTEM
5. ANY TYPE OF SCHOOLING UNDER LAW
6. PARENTS` PARTICIPATION IN THE CHILD`S LIFE
Education Otherwise
A. Though
education is compulsory in the UK children between the ages of five and
sixteen, school is not. Many families prefer to educate their children otherwise
than at school, and it is their right under UK law to do so. Home educating
families do not have to follow the National Curriculum and there is no single
«right» way to educate a child at home.
B. Education
Otherwise ( EO ) was formed by a small group of parents in 1977 and has evolved
into a large self-help organization which offers support and information to its
members. They take their name from the Education Act, which states that parents
are responsible for their children`s education, «either by regular attendance
at school or otherwise».
C. Some
families make a carefully considered decision to home educate long before their
child reaches «school age». There may be philosophical, religious or various
other reasons for their choice, and ultimately they feel that in some way
they can offer a more suitable education for their children at home. It is also
a natural choice for parents who have enjoyed participating in their child`s
early learning and see no reason to give up this responsibility when the child
reaches the age of five.
D. Other
parents send their child into the school system, but later find that school
does not work for their child. School does not suit everyone. Sometimes
children may find it hard to fit in; some children have special needs; some
children face bullying and may become very anxious and distressed. Children may
find that school does not suit their particular way of learning, so parents who
become unhappy with the education which is provided in schools also decide to
home educate.
E. EO
has an extensive network of members that includes those families, groups and
individuals who are practicing home education as an alternative to school,
those who are considering the possibility of home education. This work has been
carried out by a nation-wide team of dedicated, experienced members who
volunteer their services free to support other members and promote home
education. Membership of Education Otherwise gives one the opportunity to meet
other home educating members, as well as offering a range of information and
ideas.

A. A group of university
students from Brazil have been given the job of discovering and locating all
the waterfalls in their country. It is not easy because very often the maps are
not detailed. The students have to remain in water for long periods of time.
Every day they cover a distance of 35 to 40 kilometers through the jungle, each
carrying 40 kilos of equipment.
B. If someone asked you
about the negative aspects of a computer game, probably the first thing that
would come to your mind is that it isolates a person from other people. Now the
first virtual reality computer game has appeared which can be played in group
of 6 people at the same time. The game is called “The Loch Ness Expedition”.
Each player is given a role in the underwater expedition. Players have to
cooperate to achieve the goal.
C. For many years now,
mail-order shopping has served the needs of a certain kind of customers.
Everything they order from a catalogue is delivered to their door. Now, though,
e-mail shopping on the Internet has opened up even more opportunities for this
kind of shopping.
D. Another generation of
computer fans has arrived. They are neither spotty schoolchildren nor
intellectual professors, but pensioners who are learning computing with much
enthusiasm. It is particularly interesting for people suffering from arthritis
as computers offer a way of writing nice clear letters. Now pensioners have
discovered the Internet and at the moment they make up the fastest growing
membership.
E. Shopping centres are
full of all kinds of stores. They are like small, selfcontained towns where you
can find everything you want. In a large centre, shoppers can find everything
they need without having to go anywhere else. They can leave their cars in the
shopping centre car park and buy everything in a covered complex, protected from
the heat, cold or rain.
F. Not many people know
that, back in the fifties, computers were very big, and also very slow. They
took up complete floors of a building, and were less powerful, and much slower
than any of today’s compact portable computers. At first, the data they had to
process and record was fed in on punched-out paper; later magnetic tape was
used, but both systems were completely inconvenient.
G. Potholing is a dull
name for a most interesting and adventurous sport. Deep underground, on the
tracks of primitive men and strange animals who have adapted to life without
light, finding unusual landscapes and underground lakes, the potholer lives an
exciting adventure. You mustn’t forget, though, that it can be quite dangerous.
Without the proper equipment you can fall, get injured or lost.
