В
по предложенной теме;
- углубление и расширение лексического запаса;

There is a wide-spread custom of sending greeting
cards or gifts to express affection. Every February 14, millions of people send
Valentines to those whom they love. The cards, known as Valentines, are often
designed with hearts to symbolize love.
Millionen Menschen
schicken am 14.Februar den liebenden Menschen «Valentinka». Man stellt diese
Postkarte in Herzform dar, die die Liebe symbolisiert.
In England Valentine greetings have been popular since
the Middle Ages, when lovers used to send Valentine verses to their sweethearts.
Valentine cards are usually decorated with symbols of love and friendship.
These symbols were devised many centuries ago.
Lace symbolizes a net for catching one’s heart. If you
get a Valentine with a piece of lace you may understand that the person who
sent it must be crazy about you. But some experts consider that lace stands for
a bridal veil.
A
ribbon means that the person is tied up, while hearts, which are the most
common romantic symbol, denote eternal love. Red roses are also often used as a
love emblem.
Cupid, the
Roman god of love, has also become one of the most famous Valentine symbols.
Cupid is traditionally depicted as a charming boy with a bow and arrows. The
wounded persons immediately fell in love.

Valentine’s Day grows more and more popular in many
countries of the world. Some people have already begun to celebrate it in Russia. They try to imitate European Valentine customs and want to know more about their
origin.
In Rome in 270
A.D. the emperor Claudius II issued an edict forbidding marriage. He felt that
married men made poor soldiers, because they were loath to leave their families
for battle. The empire needed soldiers, so Claudius abolished marriage. The
bishop Valentine invited young lovers to come to him in secret, where he joined
them.
Claudius II learned of this “friend of lovers” and
invited Valentine to the palace. The emperor attempted to convert him to the
Roman gods. But Valentine refused to renounce Christianity and on February 24,
270, he was stoned, then beheaded.
While
Valentine was in prison awaiting execution, he fell in love with the blind
daughter of the jailer, Asterius. Through his unswerving faith, he miraculously
restored her sight. He signed a farewell message to her “From your Valentine”,
a phrase that would live long after its author died.
At present St. Valentine’s parties the slips of papers
are dropped into a Valentine box. It is usually decorated with white lace, red
hearts and blue forget-me-nots. It has also become traditional to put verses
into the Valentine box like this:
I’ll be your sweetheart,
And you will be mine,
All of my life
I’ll be your Valentine.
