Olympic Gold

Women began taking part in the Olympics in 1900. That year, they were allowed to play in only three sports: archery (the sport of shooting with a bow and arrow), golf and tennis. (Notice that none of these are team sports). The first women’s team sport – volleyball – wasn’t part of the Olympics for another 68 years! Women’s basketball was added to the 1976 Olympic Games and soccer competition began in 1996. Women’s ice hockey was first played at the Games in 1998.

The Olympic Games are watched by millions of television viewers. For many, this was the first time they had seen women playing team sports. American women’s teams have won medals in many matches. In 1996 alone, American women won gold medals in basketball, soccer and softball. The public’s interest and excitement for the sports increased.

There are Summer Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games. Each is played for only two weeks every four years. Fans of women’s sports clamored (demanded noisily) for more.  Now, two legs of the stool were in place^ skilled athletes and eager fans. Advertisers took  notice.

Look at the verbs on your cards. Make their Participle II. For example: play-played, buy-bought.

to play -

to  buy -

to  spend -

to  use -

to  promise -

to pay -

to  read -

to  take -

to tell -

to live -
