A bookworm, of course.

-          What did one book say to the other one?

I just wanted to see if we are on the same page.

3.      You have already guessed that today we are going to speak not only about books but also about libraries. Let’s read the text about Russia’s State library. Exercise 8 page 115 K. Kaufman  student’s book.

to present, to read, to call, to give, to rename, to build, to found, to rename

Russia’s State Library is in Moscow. It is the largest library in Europe  and the second largest     library in the world. It is also Moscow’s first public library.

The library __________ in 1862 and _________ The Rumyantsev Library. Originally the library had contained the books from Nicolai Rumyantsev’s book and manuscript collection.

Those books __________ by his children. The library grew quickly, and thousands of books __________ to the library by private collectors.

In 1924 the library __________ after Lenin and became the country’s national library. At that time the main building of the library __________. It took about twenty years to finish it.

In 1992 the library __________ again and became the Russian State Library. Nowadays

there are thousands of ancient manuscripts and unique documents in the library, which ________ by thousands of people every day.

Fill in the verbs in bold:

Now listen to the tape and check your answers.

4.       Answer my questions about the Russia’s State library:

a)      Where is Russia's State library situated?

b)      Is it the largest library in Europe?

c)      When was the library founded?

d)      Ноw was the library called?

e)      What books had the library contained?

f)       Who read those books?

g)      The library was renamed after Lenin in 1924, wasn’t it?

h)      Was the main building built at that time?

i)       When did the library become the Russian State Library?

j)       Who presents ancient manuscripts and documents nowadays?

5.      When you go to the library you must obey some rules. Please read them and rewrite them using the verb must:  e.g. You must use all library equipment carefully.

-          All library equipment and books are used carefully

-          Conversations are kept to a minimum and as quiet as possible

-          Personal stereos are not used in the library

-          Mobile phones are turned off before readers enter the library

-          No food or drink is consumed

-          All borrowed books are brought back by the due date

-          Fines for the return of the books are paid

-          All books are shown to the librarians before you leave the library

-          Everybody is treated with politeness

6.      Did you know these rules? How often do you go to the library? What do you think? Will there be any libraries in the future? Please, make two teams. Team 1 will find arguments against libraries in the future, team 2 will explain why libraries must stay.

Libraries must stay because …  /    Libraries will disappear because …

7.      You know, one of the rules in the library is to be quiet, not to talk loudly. Let’s play a game. It is called “Chinese telephone”. I will need 5 students. I will tell you the word, you will tell it very quiet to your neighbor and so on. The last one will tell the word aloud and I’ll tell you my word.

8.      The work of a librarian is not so easy as many people may think. Now you can try. There are different books in the first column and some literary genres in the other. So your task will be to put books in the right place.

9.       Your home task was to write a report about the book you’re reading now or have recently read. Let’s discuss your reports.

10.   Here are some riddles. Try to guess!

I have many leaves,
But I am not a tree;
I’m something nice,
Come and read me.

The field is white,
Black is the seed,
And sower who sowed it
Was clever indeed.

I’m neither a rhyme nor a song,
I can be short or very long,
I can be funny or quite sad,
But to read me you’ll be glad.

11.   Well, now today we discussed libraries, tried to work as librarians. What was new for you? What can you do now? What did you like best?

12.  You worked well. You certainly deserve good marks.

13.   Homework: please, translate this poem by R. Dahl into Russian

The most important thing we've learned,

So far as children are concerned,

Is never, NEVER, NEVER let

Them near your television set -

Or better still, just don't install

The idiotic thing at all.

IT ROTS THE SENSES IN THE HEAD!

IT KILLS IMAGINATION DEAD!

IT CLOGS AND CLUTTERS UP THE MIND!

IT MAKES A CHILD SO DULL AND BLIND

HE CAN NO LONGER UNDERSTAND

A FANTASY, A FAIRYLAND!

HIS BRAIN BECOMES AS SOFT AS CHEESE!

HIS POWERS OF THINKING RUST AND FREEZE!

HE CAN NOT THINK - HE ONLY SEES!

"All right!" you'll cry. "All right!" you'll say.

"But if we take the set away,

What shall we do to entertain

Our darling children! Please explain!"

We'll answer this by asking you,

"What used the darling ones to do?

How used they keep themselves contented

Before this monster was invented?"

Have you forgotten? Don't you know?

We'll say it very loud and slow:

THEY : USED : TO : READ!

They'd READ and READ,

AND READ and READ,

and then proceed

TO READ some more.

14.   Our lesson is over. I believe you’ll certainly agree that books are one of the best inventions of man.
