·
Theme.
·
Main idea.
·
Plot.
·
Conflict.
·
Time.
·
Characters.
·
Grammatical
level.
·
Stylistic
devices.
Jane Austen: «Pride
and Prejudice».
Theme.
The theme of the text is the
receiving the letter by Elizabeth, her feelings of the situation and Mr.
Darcy’s reaction to her despair.
Main idea.
There are two main ideas in the text:
•
The first one, connected with the letter
itself, shows such strong familiar relationships between two sisters that
Elizabeth blames all mistakes on herself yet she has done nothing wrong.
•
The second one (the most important) is
about human’s sympathy to each other which can help people in any misfortune
and draws together them, their lives and souls.
Plot.
The plot is quite simple as there is
mainly description of feelings in the text.
The action is moved by dialogs. All the
dynamic of the story is connected with the extrascenic
events that are given in the letter.
The plot is quite simple as there is
mainly description of feelings in the text.
The action is moved by dialogs. All the
dynamic of the story is connected with the extrascenic
events that are given in the letter.
We have no exposition and no climax.
Conflict.
•
Character
vs. circumstances (Elizabeth against the situation, the loss of her younger
sister)
•
Character
vs. character (Elizabeth and Mr. Wickman who is supposed to be a dishonest man)
•
Character
vs. self (Elizabeth blames only herself in the situation)
Time.
Concerning this extract we show only small
period f time:
Elizabeth is disappointed after reading
the letter; Mr. Darcy enters the room then there is a dialog when he finds out
what has happened
Also there is a reference to the past each
time when Elizabeth blames herself:
•
“I might have prevented it”
•
“Oh! had I known what I ought, what I
dared, to do!”
Elizabeth doesn’t see the future for her
young sister who “is lost for ever”.
Thus we see:
•
Past
(about which Elizabeth regrets)
•
Present
(the moment of dialog)
•
Future
(which won’t come to the younger sister)
1. Characters
In this extract we meet two
kind of characters which are depicted in different ways:
direct
indirect
Elizabeth:
•
intelligent girl without
any dowry
•
she is independent
enough, as she “is hardly standing any chance of marriage”
•
the girl is emotional,
impulsive and sensitive, as during the extract she “cried”, “exclaimed”,
“she burst into tears”; she’s disappointed about the letter;
•
she is about to leave Mr.
Darcy in order to find and save her sister, though she doesn’t have a clue how
to do it; without any doubt Elizabeth is a determined and responsible
person. Now she blames herself “I might have prevented it!”
Mr. Darcy:
•
he loves Elizabeth
•
he takes her problems to heart and sincerely wants to help her; he’s “grieved –
shocked”
•
he is also a well-brought-up man; “cried he, with more
feeling than politeness”.
•
and he offers her any kind of help.
Indirect characters
•
Jane (Elizabeth’s sister).
We know about her only that she has written that letter to inform Elizabeth.
•
Elizabeth’s younger sister.
To this extract she is giddy and light-headed, as she “has eloped” with
a man and “has thrown herself into his power”.
•
Elizabeth’s father. He’s
gone to London to find his daughter.
Due to this we find out
that Elizabeth has a big and close-knit family, where everyone loves
each over.
•
Servant. This character is to show us the social status of Mr.
Darcy.
•
Mr. Wickham is a man with whom Elizabeth’s sister has gone. He
is considered to be a base man and leaves the girl, as “she has no
money, no connections, nothing that can tempt him to”.
Lexical level.
The thematic groups:
•
Words of feelings (the main
one): gentleness, commiseration, relief, ill, astonishment, shocked, grieved,
•
Toponymes: London, Brighton,
Longbourn, Scotland
•
Words that describe the
situation: dreadful news, wretched mistake (suspense), compassionate silence,
way horrible (inversion), the smallest hope, silent acquiescence.
•
Words that show conditions: room,
door, servant
•
Words that detail
characters: impetuous manner, politeness.
All in all, a lot of
words are pretty ennobled (grieved, eloped, commiseration, etc), which suits the 19th century.
Grammatical level
•
We can see here conditional
mood which is to show how Elizabeth regrets about the situation and blames
herself.
•
A lot of exclamations,
which emphasise: “Oh!”, “Good God!”, “It is every way horrible!”.
•
Unusual constructions: “On his quitting the room…”; emphatic constructions:
“burst into tears”, “she is lost for ever”, “has thrown herself into power of
”; phrasal verbs: “gone off”, “worked on”.
Stylistic devices
•
Of course there are a lot of
epithets: “pale face”, “dreadful news”, “impetuous manner”, “miserably
ill”, “compassionate silence”, “wretched suspense”.
•
Inversion: “Had his character been known, this couldn’t have happened”,
“Had I known…” (for conditions); “It is every way horrible!”, “But I knew not”
(+omitting the component “do”)
•
Gradation: “grieved – shocked”
•
Repetition: “But nothing can be done. I know very well that nothing can be
done”, “Wretched, Wretched, mistake!”, “But is it certain, absolutely certain?”
•
Rhetorical questions: “How is such a man to be worked on? How are they even to be
discovered?”.
Specification: “My younger sister has left all her friends – has eloped; - has
thrown herself into power of – of Mr. Wickham”.
Asyndeton: “She has no money, no connections, nothing…”.
Parcelling: “… I might have prevented it! I who knew what he was”
