Тема « Эссе с элементами рассуждения « Can money buy happiness?»»

Учитель –Ахтямова Е.В.

Цель урока: развитие навыков написания эссе и речевых умений учащихся.

Задачи:

Познавательный аспект:

• формирование базы для развития письменной речи.

Учебный аспект:

•        совершенствование речевых навыков школьников:

•        высказывание своего мнения  об увиденном и прочитанном;

•        умение предоставить противоположную точку зрения;                           

Развивающий аспект:

•        развивать у школьников способности к  анализу, сравнению и обобщению;

Развивать умение аргументировать свой ответ.

•        развивать у них психические функции, связанные с речевой деятельностью: логическое мышление, память, внимание, восприятие;

•        развивать положительные эмоции и чувства школьников;

•        формировать у них потребность и способность осуществлять продуктивные речевые действия;

Воспитательный аспект:         

•        воспитывать толерантное отношение к чужому мнению;

•        развивать у учащихся самостоятельность мышления;

Оборудование урока:

1.      Мультимедийный проектор.

2.      Компьютер.

3.          Диск с аудио записью.

4 .        Презентация к уроку на тему « Эссе с элементами рассуждения « Can money buy happiness?»»

5.        Раздаточный материал- листы с упражнениями, листы с заданием к аудированию.

 

Ход урока

1.     Организационный момент: Приветствие. Сообщение учителем целей и задач урока.

T. Good morning, boys and girls! Happy to see you today. How are you? Take your sits, please. Today at the lesson we will work at the  written part of your exam, at your opinion essay. We will review the structure and some rules of writing an essay, simultaneously we are going to discuss a very important and controversial question: Can money buy happiness?” (слайд 1)

    2. Фонетическая зарядка.

Let’s start with a tongue twister. Look at the 2nd slide. Listen to me.

If you understand, say ""understand"".

If you don't understand, say ""don't understand"".

But if you understand and say ""don't understand"".

how do I understand that you understand. Understand!?

Now let’s read it all together.( читают хором)

3.Речевая зарядка.

T. What is happiness? It’s a difficult question and I’m definitely sure that happiness can’t mean the same to all people. As for me happiness is my child, my husband, my parents- my family. Travelling also makes me happy.

 What about you? What is happiness for you? What makes you happy?

Write down 5 things in your live that make you happy and decide which of the things require money and which don’t. (слайд 2,3 )

Предполагаемые ответы учащихся.

S. For me happiness is love, to meet a good partner.

S. Happiness is my friends.

S. Happiness is travelling.

S. A good song makes me happy.

S. Shopping makes me happy.

T. So, we can see that money is a key to happiness. Money can buy you happiness, as long as you give some of the money away, or use it for an experience rather than buying a product.

 

4.     Основная часть урока.

T.1. As we are preparing for the opinion  essay you  have to know how to work with controversial questions.  Don’t forget that here you must give your own opinion with supporting statements and give an opposing view with arguments.  Now let’s revise the structure of the opinion essay. Look at the slide, look through  it. (слайд 5) The first part is an introduction, here you must introduce the topic ,state the problem. You can use the following expressions.  (слайд 6)

It is often said.

We must admit that…\There is no doubt that…\ It cannot be denied that…\ It goes without saying that…

Many people are convinced that….

People have been (…-ing) … since time immemorial / recent years.

It is often suggested that….

What / How … ?

The second part is your opinion. To express it, use the following phrases:(cлайд 8)

The main argument against… First of all, I would like to consider… The first thing I would like to consider is… To begin with, …/ To start with,

Then you have to support your opinion.

Despite the fact that…/ In spite of the fact that… On the one hand, … /On the other hand, … Besides,…/ In addition,… What is more, …/ Moreover, …/ More than that, … Finally, … However, … / …, though …although… Nevertheless,…

At the third  part you have to give an opposing view with a supporting statement. (Слайд 8)

On the other hand, some people believe that …\ However, other people believe …

Another point is that\They say that …

… , so \ because …

Besides,

The conclusion consists of two paragraphs. In the fourth part of  your essay you have to explain why you don’t agree with the opposing opinion.

I strongly disagree with this statement, because …

Despite other people’s opinion, I still believe that …

However, to my mind…

In the fifth part restate your own opinion.

To sum up, … To conclude, I would argue that… On this basis, I can conclude that… In conclusion, I would like to stress that… All in all, I believe that…

 

 2.Now let’s practice the use of linking words and do some exercises.

Some people think that studying the English language in an English-speaking country is the best way to learn the language. Other people argue that this is not the only way to master the language. What is your opinion?

Studying a language in a country where it is widely spoken has many advantages. It is 1)______________________a good idea to study English in a country such is Britain. 2)____________________, I believe it is not the only way to learn the language.

   3)____________________, most students in non-English-speaking countries learn English at a secondary school and sometimes at  university nowadays. 4) _____________________their spoken English is not usually of very high standard, their knowledge of grammar is often quite advanced. This is certainly useful when students come to an English-country to perfect the language.

   5) ________________, studying the basics of English at secondary school is less stressful than learning the language while overseas. This is because students living at home do not have to worry about problem such as finding accommodation, paying for their study and living costs, and trying to survive in a foreign country where day to day living causes much stress.

   6)__________________, there are advantages of learning English in Britain. Every day there are opportunities to practice listening to and speaking with British people. 7)________________________, students can experience the culture first-hand, which is a great help when trying to understand the language. This is especially true if they choose to live with a British family, as exchange student, for example. 8)______________, if students attend a language school full-time, the teachers will be native speakers. In this case, 9)___________________ will students speaking and listening skills improve, 10)________________________ attention can be given to developing reading and writing skills as well.

№2 . Read the text below. Put their argument into the correct order, using the key words and expressions in bold to help you. The first one and last one have been done for you.

1  A. I’m ready in two minds about what to do when I leave school. Should I go straight to university or should I spend a year travelling around the world?

__B. It is often said that knowledge is the key to power, and I cannot disagree with this. 

___C. On the one hand, I would experience lots of different cultures.

___ D. Unfortunately, another point is that if I spent a year travelling I would need a lot of money.

___E. And I’m not alone in this opinion. Many consider a sound career and a good salary to be an important goal. 

___F. However, it could be argued that I would also meet lots of interesting people while I was travelling.

___G. Secondly, if I go straight to university, I’ll learn so many things that will help me in my future life.

___H. First of all, there are so many benefits of going straight to university.

___I. But/ believe that it would be easy to make a bit while I was travelling, giving English lessons or working in hotels and shops.

___J. Moreover, I’ll be able to take part in the social activities that the university offers, and meet lots of new friends who share the same interests.

___K. The most important point is that the sooner I get mu qualifications, the quicker I’ll get a job and start earning.

___L. Nevertheless, these inconveniences would be an inevitable part of travelling and would be greatly outweighed by the other advantages.

___M. In my opinion, starting work and making money is one of the most important things in life.

___N. On the other hand, I could end up suffering from culture shock, homesickness and some strange tropical diseaes.

___O. Furthermore, if I spent a year travelling, I would learn more about the world.

16   P. All right, I’ve made my mind up. Now, where’s my nearest travel agency?

 

3.Now let’s listen to a song.

You are going to hear Shania Twain’s song called Ka-ching. The song is about shopping. At first let’s read Will Smith’s statement.

Too many people spend money they haven't earned, to buy things they don't want, to impress people they don't like. --Will Smith (слайд 11)

What does he mean when he says that people spend money they haven’t earned? Where or who do they have the money from then? Do you agree with the statement?

4. T. Now I want you to discuss these statements in groups. The first statement is for the first group, the second is for the second group and the third is for the third group. Then one of your group will present your ideas to the class. You have 5 minutes for discussion.

What is your opinion? Do you agree with this statements? (слайд 12)

1 Worries about money are a cause of unhappiness.

2 Rich people are not always happy.

3 Love and friendship bring more happiness than money.

    T. Who wants to start?
