Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe is an American novelist, poet, essayist, literary critic, and editor, a representative of American romanticism. The creator of the classic detective form and the genre of psychological prose.

Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, USA.
Poe was one of the first American writers to make the short story the main form of his work. For twenty years of creative activity, Poe wrote two novels, two poems, one play, about seventy short stories, fifty poems and ten essays, published in magazines and almanacs, and then collected in collections.
He is best known as the author of "scary" and mystical stories, as well as the poem "The Raven".

Poe was the first to think of making the main character a detective, his main weapon — analytical abilities, and the basis of the plot-a murder investigation. It is from here that the legs of the famous Sherlock Holmes grow. The prototype of the detective could serve as Edgar himself — at one time he was fond of cryptograms, even asked the readers of the magazine to send ciphers and published them in unraveled form. "The Mystery of Marie Roger" is proof of the writer's impressive analytical abilities. Edgar wrote the story based on information from newspaper clippings about the investigation of the real murder of the girl Mary Rogers in New York.

The dark story of Edgar Allan Poe.
Everyone knows that Poe wrote dark stories in which ladies with a variety of names often died under strange circumstances. But the writer's life itself was like one of his stories.
Poe's life is a grim guide to how to become incredibly famous and yet live penniless, combine genius and huge self-esteem with drunkenness, chronic bad luck and severe bouts of depression, make a name for yourself on toxic critical articles, and much later become truly famous through texts about death.

Contrasts and success after death.
In 1827, 50 copies of the collection "Tamerlane and other poems"were printed, one of which in 2009 was sold at auction for a record amount for American literature - $ 662,500.
In 1849, Edgar finally received the offer that he seems to have dreamed of all his life-to establish a national literary magazine and become its editor.
After finishing a series of lectures in Richmond, Poe sailed safely to Baltimore, where he fell into the strangest and last of his "twilight episodes". An old friend found him outside the tavern without his belongings, in someone else's clothes and in a state of complete stupor.

Art begets art.
Edgar Allan Poe was almost the idol of the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy.
And now his dark stories give a huge free rein to the imagination of modern artists.

And here are the illustrations to his works.

On my own behalf, I want to add that Edgar Allan Poe was able to describe and convey the atmosphere in the most incredible way. I, as a lover of details, could not ignore his works. Each new story tells a completely new story, but all of them are connected by one thing-an amazing dark atmosphere.
"Misery is multifaceted. The many faces of earthly woes. Embracing the wide horizon like a rainbow, it carries as many colors as this celestial arch-and just as different from each other, and just as merging together. Covering the wide horizon like a rainbow! Why did I see in beauty the embodiment of ugliness, in the pledge of serenity - the smile of sorrow? But just as in ethics evil is the consequence of good, so in life sorrow is born out of joy: memories of past bliss become present suffering, and torments turn into unfulfilled raptures.”
