understanding characters through epithets

What epithets reveal
Epithets reveal some of the most memorable or most particular characteristics of a character. They show the traits the character is famous for or that the author wants us to remember.

epithet - definitions
a descriptive substitute for naming the actual person, place, or thing. (e.g. “the blind bard” instead of saying the poet’s name, Homer)
In Book 1, Homer frequently refers to the “bright-eyed Athene” (“grey-eyed Minerva” in the pdf translation). Here, he does say her name, but he is also using “bright-eyed” as an epithet.
Wait a minute, isn’t that just an adjective…?

epithet – definitions
According to Purdue University’s online writing lab, an epithet is “‘an adjective, noun, or phase expressing some characteristic quality of a thing or person or a descriptive name applied to a person, as Richard the Lion-Hearted’ .
An epithet usually indicates :
some notable quality about the individual with whom it addresses, but it can also be used ironically to emphasize qualities that individual might actually lack.”
If an adjective is used repeatedly in order to inextricably connect that particular characteristic with that character, then it becomes more than an adj., it becomes an epithet.

epithet – definitions
You will also notice that the article “the” is often used in these types of epithets, making the name less of a name and more of an identity or personality.
Example:
The grey-eyed Athene spoke with Telemachus.

(Be careful. It’s important to distinguish between epithets and adjectives. This can sometimes be tricky, but you eventually get a knack for it.)
