The original people of the territory are the Bashkirs.The largest cities of Bashkortostan are Ufa, Sterlitamak, Salavat, Neftekamsk and Oktyabr'skiy. Ufa is the capital city, and it was founded in 1574. Ufa now has a population of 1.1 million people.
