One of the oldest schools in the world is а school in China. It was organized in the year 143 ВС and it was the first Chinese public school. Soon after that the building of the school was destroyed in а fire but the school was rebuilt а couple of years later. This was not the end for the tests of life for this school. The school was destroyed bу wars mаnу times and only ruins remained. But each time it was rebuilt again and again. It survived hurricanes and earthquakes, blizzards and storms. In the twentieth century it was called а model for secondary schools nationwide. For many Chinese students it is а great honour to study at that school. Would you like to study in such а school?

6. A typical English school

A.        Chiswick School is a secondary school in London. It has about 1.250 pupils between the ages of 11 and 19. Like in most British schools, all the pupils study the same subjects in the first three years. Then they work for their GCSE exams – usually taking about nine subjects. Everyone takes English, Maths and Science, but there is quite a wide choice of other subjects. After the exams, some pupils leave and get jobs; others go on to do their A levels at other schools or further education college; some stay on in school.

B.        There are six tennis courts, a gym, two squash courts and a large games field, where boys and girls play football and hockey. Pupils can also row on the nearby River Thames. There are also three main computer centres, and most subjects (such as Chemistry and Languages) have their own computers. All pupils study Information Technology. The school has a large library and a Learning Resources Centre with photocopying facilities, computer scanners and printers.

C.        When the classes are over, Chiswick students are busy too. There is judo, dance, cooking and chess provided by the school at lunch time and in the afternoon. There are music and photography clubs. There is a theatre group which puts on a play at the end of each year. The teachers and the parents encourage as many pupils as possible to take part in numerous clubs. In the holidays, the school organizes trips such as camping in Wales or skiing in Switzerland.

D.        There is one basic law in the school: to respect others and their property and behave in a normal, sensible way, with due consideration for the health and safety of all. In really serious cases, it is possible to exclude pupils for a period of time from school, or to expel them permanently. As in most schools in Britain, pupils have to wear a uniform. There is some resistance to wearing school uniform, but generally teachers and parents agree that the uniform is good for discipline.

E.        If, as a pupil, you misbehave there is a system known as WRO – Warning, Report, Out. First you get a warning from your teacher, you have to carry a form around with you and the teacher signs it after each lesson – to show that you were present and behave well. If you do anything wrong at this stage, you are out; you have to go to the hall to join any other pupils in trouble. In the hall, you all work in silence under the supervision of a teacher.

In the past, travelling was а very risky adventure. There were no roads. The transport was very primitive and slow. Many people travelled on foot and faced all sorts of dangers from wild beasts, bad weather and robbers. Only the bravest people dared to set out on а long journey. They preferred to travel in groups. Later travellers learned how to train four-footed animals like the horse or the camel and travelling became а little more comfortable. These days people travel in comfort and nearly every country in the world has а network of railways and air connections.

If your business is very urgent you can travel bу air and arrive at your destination in no time.

1. Extreme tourism

2. A way to get to know the world

3. Different types of tourism

4. For all ages and interests

5. The negative impact of tourism

6. The most popular destinations

7. Travelling tips

8. Nature-friendly tourism

A.        Tourism has become a popular activity. Indeed, nowadays people travel more, and further, than they used to. The main reasons for tourism are: recreation, leisure and business. When travelling for recreation, people want to escape their stressful daily routine and to relax. Beach holidays are an example of leisure tourism. Business trips involve going to some distant place in order to settle business issues.

B.        When people travel, they broaden their horizons. Whether on a business trip or on a honeymoon, people want to explore the place they are in. They go on excursions, try new activities like diving or mountain climbing, learn about the historical background of the place, and buy souvenirs to remind them of the local cultural peculiarities. Sometimes they find out amazing facts about people and places, and about themselves, too!

C.        Trips can be spontaneous or well-planned, but before any planning is done, you need to decide where you want to go. Lots of people prefer places where they can enjoy the sea and the sun, that’s why tourism in countries like Turkey, Thailand, Bali, Cyprus is quite a profitable industry. People who like winter leisure activities go to ski resorts in France, Austria, Iceland, Serbia and so on.

D.        A new branch of tourism is ecotourism. It involves visiting relatively untouched places in remote areas. Ecotourism is often misinterpreted as any form of tourism involving wildlife - but it’s completely different from jungle tourism or safari. Eco-tourists are against disturbing the environment; even taking photos is not recommended. Take only memories and leave only footprints is a very popular slogan for them.

E.        By educational tourism, most people mean different versions of Learn and Travel Programmes for students. But it’s not only for the young and brave. Lots of training and educational programmes for adults are offered in different corners of the world. Retired people participate in these programmes too. They gladly enroll on overseas courses ranging from gardening and design to computer skills and programming.

F.         With all the benefits of travelling, it’s still a very expensive activity and may not fit every budget. To reduce the costs, avoid travelling in high season when flight tickets, hotels, food and excursions are overpriced. Remember that, as well as the well-known, popular, and therefore most expensive, destinations, there are less prestigious but even more interesting places. When planning a trip, find out about low-cost airlines, discounts and special offers.

G.        If possible, consider means of transport other than the plane. Rapidly increasing numbers of flights have put the environment in danger. Planes pollute the air, which results in global warming.  In fact, tourism is not harmless fun as many may think: new airports and tourist infrastructure, pollution, and crowds of noisy tourists make wild animals migrate, which may decrease their population or even make them extinct.

The teaching profession has proved to be one of the most popular careers among school graduates in the UК. The choice was made out of 40 different professions on the list. About а third of the participants were interested in teaching. Other professions that generated interest included those of engineer, psychologist and artist. The medical profession was not as popular as last year and only 10% of those questioned expressed interest in being а doctor. Instead, journalism, police work and social service have risen in popularity. The girls' preferences were teaching, psychology and social work while boys were more inclined to choose а technical walk of life. The majority of school leavers want to continue their studies in some way while some 10% will work.

1)         Work abroad

2)         Work pressure

3)         A new attitude

4)         Job interview

5)         Career goals

6)         Young slaves

7)         Organizing work

8)         Unpaid work

A         Less than 50% of the working population in Britain has a full-time and long-term job. People have started to choose part-time work, self-employment, short-term employment and job sharing. And this is happening all over Europe. The «job for life» is dead. Our parents and grandparents didn’t want to change their jobs, but now the situation is different. Young people prefer to try out new things.

B         Every year thousands of young people in Britain finish school and then take a year off before they start work or go to university. Some young people go to other countries and work as volunteers. Volunteers give their time to help people — for example, they work in schools or hospitals, or they help with protecting the environment. Volunteers don’t get any money but learn a lot about the world, the people and themselves.

C         The phrase «child labour» describes work that harms children or doesn’t let them go to school. Usually small children have to start working because their families are extremely poor. They work under horrible conditions that are dangerous for their health. Children have no choice and can’t say no to adults, who make them do all sorts of tiring jobs. Child labour is illegal and is a shame for the society.

D         Some stress at work is normal, but too much stress can be bad for your physical and emotional health. It’s important to learn how to cope with stressful situations. The problem is that stress influences the quality of your communication with others: your family, friends and colleagues. The better you are at managing your own stress, the more positively people will think about you.

E         It seems that we all have the ability to manage our time and tasks. We need it to combine studies, job, and family. Some of us do it easily. They are the so-called «natural planners». These people write «to-do» lists every day and tick off every task. They never start a new project without a plan; always finish tasks in time, and follow timetables. At work natural planners are usually very successful.

F          Every employee wants to be satisfied with his job. People want to grow professionally, improve their knowledge and skills. They are always interested in the financial aspects and feel upset if the salaries they get aren’t high enough. Another thing people look for at work is stability. If a person has that, he is interested in the success of his company.

G         Opportunities for international employment are huge. There are plenty of jobs available all over the world. The application process can be difficult, but, the advantages are many. There are organizations that can help you with the necessary work papers and visas. Working overseas can be an ideal way of finding out about a new country and its people. You get knowledge and develop skills for living in a global culture.

First of all, I think that the Internet brings us many benefits. People can have access to the latest news, weather, traffic, bid-and-asked quotations, etc. Another important benefit is that the Internet is a great means of communication. A few years ago it was rather difficult to imagine that it would be possible to communicate with people from all around the world. Students have the opportunity to speak to the professors from prestigious universities, ask their opinions and extend their range of interests. People have the opportunity to communicate with the people from other countries, find out their customs, traditions and even visit each other. I think that the Internet makes our world smaller and friendlier. We've got the chance to learn more about the world's history, our forefathers and gain more knowledge.

2.    Вы два раза услышите пять высказываний, обозначенных буквами А, В, С, D, Е. Установите соответствие между высказываниями и утверждениями из следующего списка: к каждому высказыванию подберите соответствующее утверждение, обозначенное цифрами. The speaker says that the computer

1.         helps to study.

2.         reduces the amount of privacy people have.

3.         reduces the amount of leisure time people have.

4.         makes it too easy to spend money.

5.         provides lots of new kinds of entertainment.

6.         is still not for everyone.

1. Worrying time statistics

2. Hidden dangers

3. New communication opportunities

4. Communication problems in real life

5. Different opinions

6. The best social networking site

7. Time eaters

8. Prospects in education

A.        The popularity of social networking sites such as Vkontakte, Facebook, MySpace, and Classmates has risen more than four times from 2005 to 2009. Many users say these sites are good for our society, but others are sure that there are more dangers in them than benefits. Your attitude to such websites depends on your age, job, interests and way of life.

B.        Social networks promote communication with friends and family, they give people necessary and useful computer skills and teach them to express their ideas in a clear way. Another thing is that the sites let people create new relationships and reconnect with old friends. In every way, more communication, even online, makes connections stronger.

C.        Social networking sites make people spend more time online and less time communicating face-to-face. The sites have many time-wasting activities. You stay online longer than you planned and do nothing serious or important. Experts say that teenagers spend about nine hours every week on social networking sites.

D.        A big risk about social networks is that teenagers are careless. They don’t worry that their personal information and photos could be open to lots of people. Also the sites don’t guarantee that their registered members are who they say they are. If a person says he is James Burns, a college student, we have to believe him. We cannot check his real name or occupation.

E.        Psychologists say that social networking sites can have serious disadvantages. It is hard for children to have real conversations and make friends. They become selfish personalities and lose interest in real life. Parents spend less time with their children and all members of the family spend less time with each other because they are using the Internet instead of communicating in person.

F.         Internet users spend most of their time on social networks and blogs. Users in the USA spend about five and a half hours every month on their favourite site. And the number is growing. Russians spend 6.6 hours monthly on social networking sites. It is more than people in any other country. For example, in Europe it is 3.7 hours a month.

G.        New research shows that social networking sites can be used in schools. Teachers should find ways to use them in class. It would help students to learn how to get information from Internet resources and share it with classmates. Students would also be able to express themselves creatively and present themselves better.

We are always told that we should clean our teeth regularly to keep them healthy and to have fresh breath. It is believed that people started using a kind of paste to clean their teeth around 5000 years ago. However, the ingredients of these tooth powders were very different from ours. For example, the people of ancient Egypt used salt, mint, dried flowers and pepper to create tooth powder. Later, in the 18th century, in some countries in Europe, people brushed their teeth with burnt bread. The first toothpaste appeared in 1890, in Great Britain. At first it was sold in jars. Then special tubes were designed to make the toothpaste more comfortable to use.

You hear a lot about living a healthy lifestyle, but what does that mean? In general, a healthy person doesn’t smoke, is at a healthy weight, eats healthy and exercises regularly. Sounds simple, doesn’t it?

The main way to healthy living is making small changes, taking small steps, like adding fruit to your cereal, having an extra glass of water. These are just a few ways you can start living healthy without radical changes. Don’t rush. You can’t get healthy fast.

One of the biggest problems in today’s society is that we’re not active enough. We know it’s good for us but avoid it like the hardest work. Sometimes it happens because we’re used to being inactive or afraid that exercise will take too much time and effort. The truth is, movement is movement and the more you do, the healthier you’ll be. Even sm activities like household chores, gardening and walking can make difference. Start with small steps.

Once a week, turn off the TV and do something a little more physical with your family. Play games, take a walk... almost anything will be more active than sitting on the couch. Then, you may look for small ways to walk more. When you get the mail, have a walk to the post office, or take the dog for an extra outing each day.

Eating a healthy diet is another part of the healthy lifestyle. A good diet helps to manage your weight and improves your health and quality of life. It is recommended to eat a variety of food. Fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins and minerals. But you still need some other elements like protein, carbs and fat. The main thing is to balance it all. Too much of any kind of food or drink can take the body out of balance. You can’t live only on low-fat food or on coffee, it’s unhealthy and simply dangerous.

At the same time it takes more than «an apple a day» to live well in today’s hectic world. A healthy lifestyle requires that the body, the mind and the spirit work together. So don’t forget about fighting stress. If stress is a problem in your life you feel angry, nervous or just terribly tired. That’s why try to learn to relax. Enjoy a good book, take a nap, visit a friend, or go for a walk. Or why not take a new hobby which will also help you relax mentally.

Finally, there’s another important step to a healthy lifestyle, which we often miss. And that is getting enough sleep. It makes us feel fresh, energetic and puts our brain to a good working condition. It has also been proved that people who sleep little easily put on weight. Think about the last time when you didn’t get enough sleep and how you felt the next day? Perhaps your memory wasn’t that good, or maybe you got irritated easily. And as a result you end up eating sweets and other high-calorie things.

To be honest, those are typical reactions that can happen because of not sleeping properly.

So a healthy lifestyle should be full of healthy choices and behaviour. It helps you keep in good physical and mental health and live longer. It’s up to you. Start today and make small changes which can lead to big results.

Doing sports is becoming more and more popular. Some people do it occasionally — swimming in summer, skiing or skating in winter — but many people go in for sports on a more regular basis. They try to find time to go to a swimming pool or a gym at least once a week for aerobics or yoga classes, body building or just work-out on a treadmill. Some people jog every morning, some play tennis.

For those who can afford it there are clubs where they give lessons of scuba diving or riding. In spring and summer young people put on their rollerskates and skate in the streets and parks.

The most popular outdoor winter sports are shooting, hunting, hockey and, in the countries where the weather is frosty and there is much snow — skating, skiing and tobogganing. It's so nice to go to the skating-rink on a frosty sunny day. Some people prefer to be out of town in such weather and to sledge or to ski in the woods. Many people greatly enjoy figure-skating and ski-jumping.

Summer affords excellent opportunities for swimming, boating, yachting, cycling, gliding and many other sports. Among outdoor games football takes the first place in public interests; this game is played in all the countries of the world.

The other games that have firmly established themselves in favour in different countries are cricket, volley-ball, basketball , and so on. Badminton is also very popular both with young and old.

All the year round many people indulge in boxing, wrestling, gymnastics and track and field events. Scores of young girls and women go in for calisthenics. Over the last few years aerobics has become popular with young girls and women. Aerobics helps them to be slim, healthy and strong. The interest for it greatly increased thanks to Jane Fonda, a prominent American actress, the founder of this kind of sport. This woman may serve as an impressive example of inexhaustible health, cheerfulness and beauty. Being a great enthusiast of aerobics she has been trying to initiate many women all over the world into this sport.

Among indoor games which one can go in for all the year round are billiards, table tennis, draughts, chess, of course. The results of chess tournaments are studied and discussed by enthusiasts in different countries.

1.                  The main point

2.                  The Net influence

3.                  Lack of choice

4.                  Wild way of entertaining

5.                  The top five

6.                  Media communication

7.                  Mobile media entertainment

8.                  Modern interests

А.  Between December 2003 and December 2005, total TV reach declined but the biggest fall was among young people – it fell by 2.9% for 16 –24 year-olds. During 2005, reach declined by 2.2% in that age group. Reach is defined as at least 15 minutes of consecutive TV viewing in a week. Industry figures say the decline could be due to the growth of the internet. DVDs and gaming could also be factors, they said.

В.  Digital Spy is a showbiz, entertainment and digital media community. It is the UK’s largest independent entertainment website generating over 90 million monthly page impressions. Digital Spy is also renowned for its extensive and unique coverage of Big Brother each year. The discussion forums have more than 290,000 registered users and 28.3 million posts.

С. Young people (8–18) devote an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes to using entertainment media across a typical day (more than 53 hours a week), increasing by one hour and seventeen minutes a day over the past five years, according to a new study, Generation M2: Media in the Lives of 8- to 18-Year-Olds, designed and analyzed by the Kaiser Family Foundation and Stanford University researchers.

The increase in media use is driven in large part by ready access to mobile devices like cell phones and iPods. Young people now spend more time listening to music, playing games, and watching TV on their cell phones (a total of 49 min. daily) than they spend talking on them (33 min.).

D. When I plan my parties, I spend time thinking about the menu, the music, the table settings, centerpieces and all the other little details that go into making a wonderful event. But the first thing I really focus on is my guests. After all, that’s the real reason for all the rest. They are usually my friends and I try to do my best to adjust my party to each of our company.

E.  He writes a blog, downloads Korean television shows, manages two Web sites devoted to music and plays an online game called Rongguang Hospital, at Baidu.com. “I started doing a lot of this when I was about 11 years old,” says Mr. Li, a freshman at the Shanghai Maritime University. “Now, I spend most of my leisure time on the Internet,” he says. “There’s nowhere else to go.”

F.  Additionally, anyone under 18 and out of childhood has severely limited options when it comes to entertainment. Just about everybody has experienced the frustration of being under 18 and having nowhere to go apart from the movies or the zoo. Most young people are interested in popular music, but beyond their TV and radio, there’s very little offered to them. Essentially, any licensed premises are out of bounds which creates an enormous void in popular music options.

G. This survey was done in March 2010 (Term 1), and so it is not surprising that summer Hollywood blockbusters featured in the films listed by students as the most enjoyable film they’d watched recently. The top 5 films were Alice in Wonderland, Avatar, Shutter Island, Valentine’s Day and The Hangover. It is interesting to note that 3 of the top 5 films have unrestricted ratings.

There are not many nations that can say that their national dish has become an international phenomenon. Italy has two such dishes, pasta and of course pizza. Italians say there are two categories of pizza: Italian pizza and the rest of the world.

Almost the whole world believes that pizza is an Italian creation. You may be surprised but we cannot say for sure who invented the very first pizza pie. Food historians agree that dishes like pizza were eaten by peoples in the Mediterranean including the Greeks and Egyptians.

One theory says that Greeks baked large, round, flat breads which they ate with simple toppings like oil, garlic, herbs, and spices. The Romans enjoyed something similar and called it «picea». In the city of Naples the word turned into «pizza» and that was the beginning of modern pizza history. Naples became the home town of the pizza we know now.

1. Risky food

2. Convenient but unhealthy

3. A dangerous disease

4. The secret of a balanced diet

5. An unhealthy custom

6. A weight-loss camp

7. Weight problems in Britain

8. Unhealthy food

A.        Weight problems among children in Britain are increasing. More and more children are over their ideal weight. Obese children are often bullied at school and may have health problems on too much junk food, computer games and TV. So the first Britain’s camp for obese children has been opened. Each morning at the camp, the children do three hours of activities like football, hockey and rugby. After lunch they have lessons on nutrition and cooking. Most kids leave the camp feeling healthier and happier than before.

B.        Do you know a person who has never eaten fast food? Many restaurants sell what is called “fast” or “junk” food - hamburgers, chips and so on. This food is tasty and cheap. Such food is very popular, especially with children and teenagers. What is more, fast food saves much time and effort for busy working people. People don’t have to go to a supermarket, prepare meals and wash the dishes when they eat out. However, many experts say that fast food is not healthy.

C.        In North America and Europe people think that a slim woman is healthy and careful about what she eats. But in many parts of Africa a fat woman is considered beautiful. In central  Africa the girls are sent to fattening rooms where these girls sit, lie and eat. They are given bowels of food that help them get fat. It is boring to stay in these rooms for so long with nothing to do, but the girls do not mind. A future husband wants his wife to be fat so other people will think that the man is rich and he is a responsible man.

D.        Experts say that fast food makes people overweight and even obese and elevates the risk of diabetes and cancer. If your food includes hamburgers, chips, hot dogs, pizzas and fizzy drinks like Coke, Pepsi, Sprite and others, you are facing a serious problem threatening your health. Such food is full of chemical additives. For example, a can of Coke contains about eight teaspoons of sugar and artificial sweeteners. More over, there is a risk of food poisoning.

E.        Food poisoning is a common, distressing and sometimes life-threatening problem for millions of people throughout the world. Food poisoning is when someone gets sick from eating food or drink that has gone bad or is contaminated by bacteria. Depending on the type of infection, people can even die as a result of food poisoning. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 16 million people in Britain become ill from the food they eat, and about 1,000 of them die every year.

F.         People today are probably more concerned about food than ever before. We worry about eating foods that contain too much fat and so we cut down on things like meat, bread, potatoes and dairy products. The problem is that we may also be cutting out good sources of iron or other vitamins and minerals. Suddenly we start feeling tired and irritable. Eating well does not mean that you should cut out all your favourite foods; it just means eating sensibly and trying to avoid too much fast food.

G.        Genetically modified crops have been developed by changing the plant’s genetic structure in order to help the plant resist against different diseases or produce larger harvest. However, there is no scientific conclusion so far to prove the safety of GM foods for humans. We don‘t know what unforeseen consequences there might be. Most people prefer not to risk their health because scientists are not sure if GM food is absolutely harmless or not.
