The Usage Of The Word «Foot» In The Works Of The American and English Authors

  Introduction

This work concerns the research of the lexical meaning and usage of the word «Foot» on the material of the works of the English authors Rudyard Kipling «The Jungle Book» and Allan Sillitoe «Key to the Door» and American author J. Fenimore Cooper «The Spy».

  We used such methods of investigation as the deeper analysis of the usage of this word and the frequency of its usage.

One of the functions of words is to denote things, concepts and so on.

  Users of language cannot have any knowledge or thought of the objects or phenomena of the real world around them unless this knowledge is embodied in words which have essentially the same meaning for all speakers of that language.

The Word «Foot» and Its Origin

  We made our research concerning the word «foot». We came across the origin of this word in the Etymology Dictionary.

3)    I shot myself in the foot – я сказал глупость, я сделал это себе во вред;

4)    To get your foot in the door – иметь возможность зацепиться  за какую-то работу, или сделать первый шаг в сторону новых отношений;

6)    Shoes on the other foot – обстоятельства изменились, и ответственность теперь лежит на другом;

  When I was examining compound words in the works of the English authors Rudyard Kipling and Allan Sillitoe and American author J. Fenimore Cooper I came across 222 examples of the usage of these words and idiomatic expressions in their works.

In the meaning of «лакей – footman» in the following example:

1)   « Never mind the footman», said Henry, impatiently, «he can do nothing but shoot us – whereas these dragons may make me a captive again. …»

In the meaning of « шаг – footpace» in the following example:

Conclusion

The aim of my work was to collect and sum up the additional material about the usage of polysemic word «foot» on the examples from the books of the American authors John Galsworthy «The Forsyte Saga» and Ernest Hemingway «A Farewell To Arms».

In my work I gathered the huge material a number of examples of the usage of the word «foot» in the works of these authors and made e research about their meanings.

I came to a conclusion that the word «foot» is most frequently used in the meanings of «нога, ступня», «подножие, основа» in these works.

I also came across a number of phrases and idioms with this word. Among them were «on foot», «to stamp the foot», «to set the foot», «like a foot that had gone to sleep».

My work has linguistic character. It is directed on the broadening of the lexics and perfectness of research reading.

I think that my work can be used as additional material at the English lessons.
