The Theme of the Lesson “The World of Travelling. Travelling by Train”

Objectives:

Educational1. To stimulate the students’ interest in the topic “Travelling by train”.

                      2. To introduce students to vocabulary that will help them successfully complete the lesson.

Developing 1. To practice students in reading and speaking.

                     2. To give students the opportunity to use key vocabulary and concepts associated with the theme.

Bringing-up 1. To teach students to work in groups.

                     2. To discuss and report information discussed earlier with other classmates.

The Type of the Lesson: the lesson of developing students’ skills and habits.

Methods of teaching: interactive conversation, reading, discussion, presentation, work in groups, mini-servey.

Visual Aids: handouts, pictures, cards, authentic materials, PP presentation, the map of the United Kingdom.

The Procedure of the Lesson

I.             Greeting the students.

Teacher: Good morning, children. Glad to see you. How are you?

II.           Warm-up activity.

Teacher: Travelling is very often an important part in people’s life. There are many ways of travelling that attracts a lot of tourists. Let’s speak about it.

-         Do you like travelling?

-         How do you like to travel?

-         Would you like to travel to the United Kingdom?

a)     Look at the  Epigraph of the Lesson  ”Travel is the best education”.

-         What do you think about this phrase? (Students express their opinions).

Work with cards. Complete the word web: Why travel to the UK?                 Slide 2

III.         Phonetic Drill. Poem “Trains”.

Trains

Over the mountains, over the plains,

Over the rivers here come trains.                                          

Carrying passengers, carrying mail,

Over the country here come trains.

-

Speaking. Work in groups. What means of transport do you know? Slide 4

 Work with cards, discussion in groups. Make a word map for transport.

Use the words in the box and other words you know.              

-         Let’s check up your task. Look at slide 5 and correct the mistakes if you have any.

V. Reading Practice.

Reading text A “The Orient Express”, text B “High-Speed Trains”. Textbook p. 123.

a)     Before reading

Pre-reading questions

-         Look at the titles of the texts. What are these texts about?

b)    Reading

Students listen and repeat the words that are new or unfamiliar to them after the teacher. Try to explain or to suggest meanings of the words: route, luxurious, restaurant, politician, the Orient Express, technologies, reliable, Belgium.

- Read the paragraphs of the text aloud.

c) After reading               Textbook p. 123.

- Find words in the text for:

1. people who are occupied in politics                                         - a politician

2. a person who speaks for his country (ambassador or council) - a diplomat

3. people who work in business                                                   - a businessman

4. people who build                                                                      - a builder

5. people who write for TV and newspapers                                - a journalist

6. king’s family                                                                             - a royal family.

VI. Vocabulary.  

Teacher: Today we shall learn some new words.

Teacher explains the meaning of new words in English.

1.     Platform                                 an area next to the railway track where passengers      get onto and off the train.

2.     Porter                                     a man at the station or a hotel whose job is helping people with their bags and suitcases.

3.     Queue                                   a line of people waiting for something, e.g. for tickets).

4.     Waiting room                          a room where people wait for something, for a train

5.     Refreshment room                       a room where you can eat or drink something.

6.     Left luggage office                a place at an airport, railway      station, bus station where you can pay to leave your bags for a short time.

VII. Consolidation of topical vocabulary.

Unscrambled dialogues. Work in groups.

VIII. Video “About London” (8_8 ESL video).

Teacher: What new information did you learn from this film?

IX. A mini-servey made by the students of 9th Grade.

X. Grammar: Articles with geographical names. Textbook p.124

-         What country would you like to travel?

-         Spain.

-         What city would you like to travel?

-         Paris.

Teacher: we should know the rules of using article the with geographical names.

 We do not use article the with the names of:

 the countries:  Kazakhstan, England

 the cities: Astana, Moscow

 the continents: Africa, Australia.

We use the with the names of:

 oceans:  the Indian Ocean,

seas: the Black Sea,

lakes: the Baikal

rivers: the Volga, the Thames

straits: the English Channel.

Consolidation of grammar.

Oral activity. The teacher divides the class in two teams and gives them nouns. The teams in turn add the where necessary. Each correct answer gets 1 point. The team with the most points is the winner.

Words to be used: Argentine, New York, Lake Ontario, Amazon, Alps, Red Sea, Atlantic Ocean.

Work with cards. Fill in the where necessary.

2.     … China is … most populated country in … world.

3.     The longest river in the world is … Nile.

4.     The capital of … Italy is … Rome.

5.     … North Sea is between … Britain and … Norway.
