Intellect-Show

Good day, dear friends. We are very glad you've come to our Intellect-show today.

Two teams will take part in our English contest. The first team is the team of 9a and, the second team is the team of 9b. Besides, there will be two groups of supporters. Our Intellect-show will be devoted to English-speaking countries, mostly the UK and the USA, and there will be some questions about Australia.

Today there will be many rounds. Some tasks will be difficult, others will be easier. Between the rounds there'll be some musical pauses to relax and to have a little rest.

The teachers who worked at this project would like you to check your knowledge of culture, geography, science, literature, and history of English-speaking countries.

Let me introduce the jury …

They'll score the points and announce the score after each round.

We wish you good luck, and let us start.

THE FIRST ROUND is warming-up (разминка)

I have 10 questions: 1 question to each member of the team. If you answer correctly you'll get 1 point.

Questions:

A machine that shows you the time

A clock

A large farm animal that gives milk

A cow

The number that comes after seven and before nine

Eight

A sister of your mother or your father

An aunt

An animal that looks like a small horse

A pony

To like someone or somebody very much

To love

A building where you can buy things

A shop

A model of a person made of snow

A snowman

When you count you start with this number

One

An animal with a very long neck and long thin legs

A giraffe

A young cat

A kitten

A person who helps you to learn

A teacher

A drink made from lemon, sugar and water

Lemonade

A place where you go to learn

A school

Someone you know well and like very much

A friend

A long bread roll with a sausage inside

A hot dog

THE SECOND ROUND we've called "The Dark Horse". Each nation has given birth to many outstanding people in different spheres of life. These people made the greatest contribution to the development of culture, science, etc.

Listen to me carefully and try to guess who the dark horse is. The cost of a question is 5 points.

The first definition is.

(1)This Spanish macho has made a fantastic career in Hollywood. He is talented and handsome. And who doesn’t know Zorro and the cat in Shrek

( ANTONIO BANDERAS )

(2) Before the accident in 1995, he had everything. He was a successful actor, for his Superman films: he was also an excellent athlete, pianist and horse rider. He died in October, 2004.

                                                                                                                                                      ( CHRISTOPHER REEVE )

(3) He was born in 1959 in Scotland. He grew up in a life of poverty and hard farm work. When his poems were first published he became famous overnight. He did not just write poems, he was Scotland's first collector of folk songs. He died at the age of 37.

(Robert Burns)

(4) She is a cousin of the last Russian emperor Nickolas II. She is the head of the UK nowadays.

                                                                                                                              ( Queen Elisabeth II )

The question is for both teams. Raise a hand if you know who the man is:

(5) He is called the movie wizard. His films make us scream with laughter or shiver with horror. A real success came to him in 1975 when he created Jaws. And later he went on to shake Hollywood with "Close Encounters", "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Now he is one of the most financially successful filmmakers ever.

(Steven Spielberg)

Now it's time to have a rest.

*******************************************************************************************************

4)    California

5)    William Shakespeare's memorial
