According to research by UNICEF,
approximately 20,000 kids die every day because of poverty. Furthermore, around
28% of kids in Africa are likely stunted or underweight. Poverty is closely
related with starvation, as parents have insufficient financial resources for
catering for the food requirements of their children. Starvation then leads to
malnutrition and that is why most African nations now depend on external food
donations so as to feed their people.
Many kids in
African kids cannot access basic education. Of the few who have the opportunity
to join primary school, almost half drop out, whereas others are left to
contend with elevated school fees. For the socially disadvantaged parts of the
population such as poor inhabitants in cities, physically challenged and AIDS
orphans, access to basic education is especially hard to obtain. Consequently,
a large percentage of kids in Africa are illiterate. Furthermore, girls in some
African states are discouraged to enrolling in school for cultural and
religious reasons.
