Hello, guys! I’m very glad to see you
here again.
I would like to start our lesson with a
quotation by a Greek philosopher Epictetus. Will you read it and
explain the meaning in Russian?
According to Epictetus, what is
more important: listening or speaking?
What are the qualities of a good
communicator. Choose from the list.
You are absolutely right. Are people
always like that when they communicate? What problems might occur when communicating
with someone? Let’s watch a video.
So, What problem are we going to discuss
at our lesson today?
Now, let’s imagine. When does
miscommunication happen? Open your notebooks and write down as many ideas as
you can. Work in pairs and discuss the possible reasons of miscommunication
with your partner. You have 2 minutes at your disposal.

Open your textbooks at page 118, let’s
do ex.1.
Look through the list of phrases. What
are these phrases in your language? Let’s find out. All of you have 2 phrases
on your desk. And here are the cards with Russian equivalents to them.
Everybody stand up, come up here, find a suitable Russian equivalent to your
phrase. (2 минуты)
Report back the
results. Listen and write down the phrases which are new to you.
Let’s practice
pronunciation. Listen and read after the narrator in a whisper.
Let’s practice
using these phrases to describe cartoons. Explain which mistakes the people
in the pictures are making.
What grammar tense do we use describing
somebody’s actions in the pictures. Work in groups of four. What is happening
and why is it happening? (3 минуты).

1. The woman in
the first picture seems to be a snob. She doesn’t allow the other person to
speak. She also isn’t trying to make eye contact, and she is insisting on her
own way.
2. There are two
girls in the picture. The girl on the left is playing computer games and isn’t
paying any attention to what the other girl is saying. The other girl has
negative body style, she is argumentative and aggressive.
3. There are
three children in the third picture. The girl with fair hair seems to be
friendly but I have the feeling that she is talking too fast and doesn’t let
the boy talk. And the boy seems to be shy and introverted. He has got
tongue-tied.
