RUSSIAN winter celebrations
Maslenitsa is the week before Lent. It is when Russians say goodbye to winter and welcome spring. It is a time of singing, dancing and fun.
A STRAW LADY We make a straw doll of Lady Maslenitsa, who is dressed in special clothes. Children put fancy costumes on and play in the snow. On Sunday evening, we burn Lady Maslenitsa on a big bonfire.
Enjoy your pancakes! There is a lot to eat too – especially blinis, which are delicious butter pancakes. Traditionally you can add a topping of your choice (chocolate, caviar). They are also good with herring.(селёдка)
RUSSIAN PANCAKES The history of Russian pancakes dates back to the 9th century. There are small thick ones called oladyi and big round ones called bliny. They are made at Shrovetide or Maslenitsa, a week–long spring festival the last week before Lent. Bliny are one of the most popular dishes on the Russian table. They can be served as a main dish or as a dessert.
Discuss with your partner: What kind of pancakes do you like best? When do you eat pancakes? Do you like Maslenitsa? Why? What`s your favourite celebration?
