Our environment
Objectives:
- to revise the material on our topic;
- to develop students’ speaking skills;
- to teach students to express and prove their own point of
view;
- to practice skills to work in group;
- to develop thinking abilities;
Materials:
Music, the song by Louis Armstrong “Wonderful World”, a
bottle of water, a balloon, a flower pot, a spray, task-cards.
I. Introduction.
T. Dear friends, the topic of our lesson is “Our
environment”. We are going to speak about our ecological problems and our
environment. You will work in groups.
So we start. The motto of our lesson is “People of the
world, take care of our planet, protect it.” (Yuri Gagarin)
II. Group work
Task 1
T. We have some objects on the table. Each group has
to choose one of them and explain in what way the object is connected with the
topic of our lesson.
Objects:
1) a bottle of water (water pollution);
2) a balloon (air pollution);
3) a flower pot (soil pollution);
4) a spray ( the ozone hole).
Time to prepare: 3-4 minutes.
Samples of students’answers.
Water pollution
Our planet is mostly water. Oceans cover the biggest part of
it – there are lakes, rivers, streams and underground water. All life on Earth
depends on this water. It is precious. But people don’t keep water clean. In
many places the water has become polluted. Rivers and lakes are polluted with
garbage and poisonous chemicals. Underground water is polluted with harmful
liquids that seep into the ground. A lot of chemicals used on farms are thrown
into rivers, lakes. Only 1% of water is fresh and drinkable.
The ocean which is a home to so much life is getting
polluted too. We need to save our water to keep it clean and healthy so people,
plants and animals will always have come to drink. And so fish and other
creatures will have a place to live.
Waste products of many kinds are brought into the lakes and
rivers from cities and industries. Some of the wastes kill fish and some kill
the life on the bottom of the lake or river. When plants growing in the lake or
river die, they go down to the bottom. There they decay.
Air pollution
Until about 150 years ago the air was clean and pure. Then
people started building factories. These plants, factories, many of the things
they make, like cars, trucks put a lot of harmful gases into the air. Then
people started driving cars, which added more pollution to the air.
Many cities around the world have air filled with a
pollution called “smog”. It is so strong that the air and the sky look brown
not blue. People of many cities suffer from smog. The chemical and heavy
industries are very dangerous. Much of dangerous waste goes into the air and is
carried by winds for great distances. We pollute air with smoke and gases,
water-with industrial waste, soil-with chemicals. A lot of people suffer from
many dangerous diseases.
The most polluted cities are Mexico City, Bhopal from India,
some Russian towns.
Polluted air is not only bad for people and animals, but for
trees and plants. The food we eat is polluted. So it is very important for us
to clean up the air.
Soil pollution
When you throw something away, it goes in a garbage can.
Once a week the garbage truck comes and the can is emptied, and that's the last
you see of it. But what do you think happens to the garbage then? Does it just
disappear? No way!
Almost all garbage is taken to a garbage dump, or landfill,
where the garbage truck empties it onto the ground. After the truck leaves, a
big tractor comes along and pushes dirt on top of the garbage. So, most of our
garbage is just buried.
Now we are making so much garbage that in many places, there
is not enough room to bury it all
We have to act fast and cut down the amount of garbage we
make. Can we do it?
We can recycle (which means re-using materials instead of
throwing them away) and reject (which means not buying things that can't be
re-used, like plastic wrapping and other packaging). If we recycle and reject
we will produce a lot less garbage, and help keep our planet green!
The Ozone Hole
Up in the sky, above the air we breathe, there's a layer of
gas called ozone. It helps us by blocking out rays from the sun that can harm
our skin, and by letting the rays that are good for us come through. We are
lucky to have the ozone to protect us.
Now the ozone layer is being damaged by gases that people
have made. The gases are used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and some
other things.
They float up to the top of the atmosphere, where the layer
of ozone is, and "eat up" the ozone.
Scientists are very concerned about the ozone layer, because
a lot of it has gone away in just a few years. So it's very important that we
learn to do something about it.
The Pollution and the ozone layer destruction can lead our
planet to a global catastrophe.
Task 2
T. The next task for the first group: Imagine
that you are deputies of our Town Council. What would you do to improve the
ecology of our town?
For the second group: Imagine you are journalists.
You are going to write an article about the ecological problems of Alchevsk.
What would you write?
The task for the third group: Imagine that you are
the Mayor of our town. What would you like to do to improve the ecology in
Alchevsk?
The task for the fourth group: You work at the
Ecology Department of our Steel and Iron Works. What should you do to improve
the state of the environment of our town?
Task 3
T. I hope you like to listen to music and different
songs. I offer you to listen to the song by Louis Armstrong “Wonderful World”.
I’ll give you the sheets of paper. Your task is to put the sentences into the
order they are in the song.
a) I see skies of blue
b) And I think to myself
c) I see friends shaking hands
d) I see trees of green
e) I hear babies cry
f) The colours of the rainbow
g) What a wonderful world
h) They are really saying
i) I love you
T. Listen to the song for the second time and check
your answers.
What a wonderful world
I see trees of green
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
The colours of a rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also in the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands, saying “How do you do?”
They are really saying “I love you”
I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They`ll learn much more than I`ll ever know
Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world,
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.
Task 4
T. Read the text and look carefully at each line. In
some lines there is one extra word that does not fit grammatically. Write this
unwanted word on the right. If a line is correct, don’t write anything.
Water occupies three quarters of from the surface of the
Earth.
|
|
There are a lot of water in the our air too.
|
|
A lot of ice is at the North and South Poles.
|
|
Water is being everywhere. The life is impossible without
water.
|
|
But most of the water is been salty sea-water.
|
|
Fresh water makes only 2 percent of from all the water on
our planet.
|
|
Some countries are short in of fresh water, because much
water is be needed for our life.
|
|
We must to keep water clean in rivers and lakes, because
we need water for drinking.
|
|
Plants and the animals die in the water which is polluted.
|
|
Especially great harm to the rivers and lakes is done by
oil products.
|
|
That is why the law forbids to drain harmful and waste
waters to the water reservoirs.
|
|
Task 5
T. Now you’ll have
another task. In my opinion it is interesting. Look at these slides and guess
how long these objects and materials will decay.
Slides
Task 6
T. Now I propose you to be poets. I’ll give you a
poem and your task is to write a poetic translation of it from English into
Russian.
The Stream Where I Played
I played in this stream as a child,
When the ravine seemed so endless and wild.
The water was clear and smelled so clean,
It was so long ago that it seems like a dream.
Now this stream is too dirty for my child.
The water is scummy and smells vile.
The place where I played seems so foul and decayed,
And I shed the first tear as the dream starts to fade.
T. We have talked about the environment problems and
our environment. You have worked well. Thanks for your work.
Your home task is to write a poetic translation of this poem
from English into Russian.
