Content and Instructional Strategies to the Lesson-Plan

1 Lead-in.

T:Good morning, children. How are you? Well?! I hope we'll have a wonderful time together. Let's begin our lesson and first  Now  look at the pictures (the slides on the presentation)  and say what you know and don’t know about the pictures’ topic.

S: brainstorm on the topic and share their experience about traditional food and dishes from different countries.

T: thank you very much. You are right, it is traditional food from different countries. I see, you know not only what country the dish belongs to, but also the further information about it.

Тoday we’ll talk about traditional food from different countries. And the topic of the lesson is eating out.

2. Orientation

T: children, answer some questions:

Do people usually eat tat dishes  at home?
Can people eat them  in a restaurant?
Can they eat in Mс Donald’s?
Can they eat in a pub?

S: answer the questions

T: and now look at the blackboard, please. There is a tasty crossword on it. If you do it right, you'll know where you are going today.

3.It  refers to a flatter disk-shaped bread of English origin (muffin)

4. It's a drink. In Russia people usually drink it hot, but in some countries people drink it cold (tea).

S: do the crossword, give the answer by raising  their  hands  and filling in the words into the .

(By writing words across correctly we'll get a word “café” down.)

T: well, children, it's the place where we are going today. Look at the picture. It is  a  café.

In every café  you are given a  menu for you to choose  the food you like. I also have a  menu for you today. (Appendix  2)

3. Reading for gist. You are getting a mixed menu. Read  it and say how many countries have you founded. Let’s name them and put down the countries in a  form of table. One column should be as an extra one.

4. Reading for specific information. Work in pairs.  Read the menu once again and decide  which dishes refer to what countries. Fill in the table with  the information. Extra column is for dishes that don’t pass to the countries you have chosen.

You  have read the menu and now  you can order something for eating and drinking. But at first try to remember some phrases we usually use in the café.  I give you the  list of  different phrases. (Appendix  4).  Please, choose only those ones which pass to the conversation in the café.

- I would like to try your special pancakes with fruit and cream.

- Good morning. My name is Rozov. I have an 11 o’clock appointment.

- In the box, close to the stage.

- I would like a cup of tea.

- Anything else?

-  I’ve caught a cold. I have a sore throat and a bad cough.

- What would you like to order ?

Now put the phrases into the right order and read  the dialogue. Look at the slide and check yourselves.

6. Free production. Practicing the target structure would like.

I’ve got some sheets of papers of different colours. Choose one of them.  Those, who have chosen yellow sheet  should make a dialogue at the café with a  Chinese  cuisine, red is for Italian one, blue is for a French cuisine and green is for Turkish one. Now  make your  own dialogues. The table with countries and dishes (task: reading for specific information) and the dialogue (post-reading) will  help you.

7. Feedback. Now we listen to the dialogues. While listening to the dialogues of your classmates  make notes   in the table (appendix 5) to express then your opinions about  the best choice  of dishes or the best cuisine according  to their  taste sensations, food value, compatibility of products.  Give from 1 to 5 points.

9. Conclusion

Divide the class into four groups.

Show  some pictures with traditional food from different countries and ask students to brainstorm in groups  a topic shown on  the pictures and say what they know and don’t know about it.

After a couple minutes of brainstorming and   sharing students’ experience,  encourage them and give  the topic of the lesson.

Ask students to answer some questions about places where can people eat  food from the pictures  (at home, in a restaurant, in a pub, in Mс Donald’s)

Ask students to do a crossword, which helps them to  know where they are going today. If all the words are written  “across” correctly, the word “cafe” will be  “down”. Use in the crossword the words from the text for reading: chicken, macaroni, muffin, tea.

Offer  to children a  menu  like they are given in any café. The menu should  contain dishes from different countries.

Put on any piece of clothing for a waiter.

Students   read   the  menu  and  find out if the café offers  a cuisine from one country only  or from some ones.

Pair work. Read the menu once again and fill in the table  the names of the countries  mentioned in the menu  and  dishes which refer to the countries.   Extra column is for dishes that don’t pass to anyone.

For  practicing the words and phrases to the topic “Food”, “In the cafe” give students the  list of  different phrases. They should  choose only those ones which pass to the conversation in the café.    Ask students to put the phrases into the right order and  to read the dialogue.

Offer students  to choose  one sheet of papers of different colours (yellow, red, blue, green). Now students make their own dialogues. Those, who have chosen yellow sheet  should make a dialogue at the café with a  Chinese  cuisine, red is for Italian one, blue is for a French cuisine and green is for Turkish one. The table with countries and dishes (task: reading for specific information) and the dialogue (post-reading) help them. Making a dialogue and presenting it students practice the structure would like.

While listening to the dialogues of your classmates students make notes   in the table (appendix 5) to express then their opinions about  the best choice of dishes  and the best cuisine  according  to their  taste sensations, food value, compatibility of products. Students give from 1 to 5 points and explain their choice.

Have a final wrap-up with the children discussing the best place  for  eating out,  the best cuisine from other countries,  the best menu they have had today

Give marks and explain homework. Homework: Make your own  of the country you like or have been to.
