My Daily Routine
As a rule, I get up at half past six. Good health is better than
wealth, so I do my morning exercises, brush my teeth, wash my face and cook
breakfast for the family. Then I wake my children and my husband up. We have
breakfast at seven and watch the news on TV.
I like to begin the day well, so my breakfast is always a good
one. For breakfast I usually have hard-boiled eggs or an omelette, bread and butter,
tea or coffee.
Then, I help my children to dress on and we leave our home for
study or work I don't live far from my job, so it doesn't take me long to get
there.
My working day starts at 7 forty-five and lasts for 8 hours.
I come back home at about six o’clock, cook dinner, wash up and go
shopping. I buy foodstuffs for the family. We have dinner at seven. I do my
homework for the next day, as my children do. It usually takes me several hours
to prepare well for the next day. And it is my husband’s duty to help children
to get ready with their homework.
In the evening, I always try to spend at least an hour resting. As
a rule, I sit and talk, watch a film on TV, read newspapers and magazines.
Sometimes, we go to the cinema or to the theatre.
Usually I go to bed at about eleven o'clock, but sometimes it is
impossible because of the great preparations for the next day.
My Day off
I go to work five days a week, so I have
two days off — Saturday and Sunday (I'm lucky, because some other people have
the only one day off). During the week I am very busy, so I like to have a rest
on weekend.
I am not an early riser and it is a rare
Saturday or Sunday when I get up before 9 o'clock. I enjoy staying in bed, when
I don't have to hurry anywhere. We have late breakfast at 10 and watch TV.
Usually we have something tasty: meat
salad, fried potatoes, chicken, cake or pie. If the weather is fine, I usually
do not stay indoors, I and my dog go outside. Often we go to the park and play
there. If the weather is rainy and gloomy, I stay at home and watch TV, listen
to the music, read the books.
After dinner we go visit our
grandparents or relatives, or just simply take a nap.
Sometimes I do something special on
weekends: go to an art exhibition, to the theatre, to the concert. I always go
to bed late on Sundays, and Monday morning is the nastiest thing through all
the week.
I like weekends very much, because I can
rest and gain some energy for the next week.
SOME / ANY / NO
Местоимения some, any, no ставятся перед именами существительными и

и в вежливых вопросах would you like & can I have.
not.

4.00: four
(o'clock)
8.05: five (minutes) past eight, eight oh five
2.10: ten (minutes) past two, two ten
5.12: twelve minutes past five, five twelve
11.15: (a) quarter past eleven, eleven fifteen
9.30: half past nine, nine thirty
1.35: twenty-five (minutes) to two, one thirty-five
10.45: (a) quarter to eleven, ten forty-five
7.52: eight minutes to eight, seven fifty-two
I
came here at quarter past nine.
takes off at ten minutes to twelve.
В Америке также иногда используются слова after и of (quarter after nine, ten minutes of
twelve).
I’m stuck in traffic, I’ll be home only at 8.
Слова a. m. и p. m.
The
match is starting at 4 p. m.

Hobbies differ like tastes. If you
have chosen a hobby according to your character and taste, you are lucky
because your life becomes more interesting.
Gardening is one of
the oldest man's hobbies. It is a well-known fact that the English are very
fond of gardening and growing flowers, especially roses.
Both grown-ups and
children are fond of playing different computer games. This is a relatively new
hobby but it is becoming more and more popular. I think that playing with a computer is
very interesting. It is not only "wasting time" as some people say. Computer games make us to think things
over properly, they widen and develop our mind and imagination. I have a good
collection of different games and when I have some free time I play them with
great pleasure. Some of my
friends have the same hobby and we like to play together.
Making things
includes drawing, painting, making sculpture, designing costumes, handicrafts.
Some hobbyists write music or play musical instruments.
Almost everyone
collects something at some period in his life: stamps, coins, matchboxes,
books, records, postcards, toys, watches. Some collections have no real value.
Others become so large and so valuable that they are housed in museums and
galleries.
No matter what kind
of hobby a person has, he always has the opportunity of learning much from it.
Learning new things can be the most exciting hobby.
I like to spend
my free time in different ways. I am fond of visiting museums, galleries,
cinemas and reading books. Of course, I have a hobby. Hobby is something what
you do in your spare time.
Hobbies
are divided into four large classes: doing things, making things, collecting
things and learning things.
As for me, in my spare time I like reading books and surfing the net. So
my hobby is learning things. I spend 1 or 2 hours a day on my favourite
occupation. I can’t stand people who like hunting. My husband’s hobby is
collecting CD with Soviet films. He likes watching the films on Sundays
together with our children. My daughter’s hobby is dancing. She has dance
classes twice a week. And my son’s hobby is playing football. She has football
trainings 3 times a week. My best friend’s hobby is gardening. She spends a lot
of time and money on it. She likes growing different useful fruit and vegetables.
But best of all she enjoys growing flowers.
I
think that every person should have a favourite occupation. It help to make
life more interesting and happy.
Books in Our Life
Nowadays it's almost impossible to imagine our life without books.
Perhaps, there are more books on our planet than men alive.
Long before the invention of printing people valued books as
treasure troves of the human knowledge and experience. Hand — written
manuscripts took months of writing and were collected by and kept in
monasteries with utmost care. We can distinguish books between three classes of
them.
Firstly, books on different branches of knowledge, works by
brilliant minds of mankind. Secondly, textbooks, reference books and numerous
dictionaries. And at last, books of all kinds and genres to read at leisure.
Classics should be taken a little at a time. One's understanding
of books by Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, Mopassan and Balzak depends on one's age
and experience.
Serious books are to be read conscientiously and maybe more than
once. To a thinking reader they will provide new food for thought every time he
rereads it. Many people indulge in reading science fiction, fantasy or
detective stories. Of course, there are some advantages and disadvantages of
this kind of literature, often reffered to as «easy reading».
As for me, good science fiction and fantasy develop imagination,
logical thinking, broader one's outlook.
The same could be said in favour of detective stories. They reveal
such minute details of everyday life in this or that particular country that
are of greatest interest for a curious reader. The masterpieces of this genre
by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie and others,
show the depths of psychological analysis, the insight into the human nature.
As an old saying goes, man cannot live on bread alone. Books are
the source of knowledge and the means of self — perfection. Sometimes it is
difficult to solve some problems in life. I think that books can help us. Books
must be our friends during all our life.
Questions:
1. What kind of books do you
prefer to read?
2. Do you like to read English or Russian books?
3. Is it possible to live without books for you?
4. Books are our friends, aren't they?
5. How many classes of books do we distinguish?
Music in Our Life
I love music, I think people can not live without it. The first
thing I do in the morning I switch on my tape — recorder.
We can hear music everywhere: in the streets, in the shops, on TV,
over the radio, in the cars, in the parks, everywhere. I think it's really
doesn't matter what kind of music you prefer: rock, pop, classical, jazz. A lot
of people are fond of music. They buy tapes, go to the concerts, visit Concert
Halls and Opera Theatres.
I enjoy listening music because it reflects my moods and emotions.
Very often when I'm blue, I play my favourite merry songs and feel much better.
Sometimes I attend music halls and the concerts, when popular
groups and singers are there. I like watching music programs on TV. I like to
know more and more about popular talented groups and singers I like.
One wall of my room is covered with posters of "Bon
Jovi", "Scorpions", "Roxette", Russian singers Agutin,
Sjutkin, Linda and others. Some people go to musics schools, they play
different musical instruments, sing in the chorus, try to compose music.
Unfortunately there are so many ungifted singers on the stages,
that it makes me sad. To have a good producer doesn't mean to have good ears
and voice. I think that only talented people can claim to be singers.
Questions:
1. Do you like music?
2. What kind of music do you like?
3. Are there many people fond of music?
4. Does music help you?
5. What are your favourite singers?
6. Did you go to the musical school?
1.
Неопределенный артикль – a
– перед словами, начинающимися с гласной, например, a book – an interesting book.
Give me
a book.

There are four seasons in a year: winter, spring, summer and
autumn. All seasons are good in their own way. Winter, for example, is full of
celebrations, presents and snow. Spring is the time of nature awakening and
flower blooming. Autumn can be rainy and yet beautiful, full of multi-coloured
leaves.
However, my favourite season is summer. I choose summer not only
because my birthday is in June, but also because it’s the time of holidays.
Summer is the season when the sun shines brightly, the sky is rarely cloudy and
the water in the sea becomes warm enough to swim. Even if it becomes too hot,
you can always go for a walk in the shady woods. I also like summer because
there are many berries, fruit and vegetables, not to mention numerous flowers
on the fields. Among them roses, dandelions, daisies, and other flowers.
Sometimes the air in summer becomes stuffy, but occasional thunderstorms bring
relief. After the thunderstorms the air becomes remarkably fresh and very often
we can see the rainbow in the sky.
Summer is also the time when I and my family go on holiday to
the seaside. It’s a wonderful time, when we can have a rest from the intense
academic year and relax. I think all children love summer because of long
school holidays and I’m no exception. I also enjoy my free time, playing with
my friends, watching TV, and doing other fun activities. Nevertheless, I don’t
forget to do some useful reading from time to time.
