Obesity - the Killer of the 21st Century
The Deadly Danger of Today According to the information of the national centre “Healthy eating” the number of obese people grew from 850,000,000 to 2,000,000,000 since 1980 to 2014. It is a fact that obesity leads to heart diseases, diabetes and stroke. In 2010 from 3 to 4 million people died because of obesity.
LAND OF THE FATTEST According to WHO (World Health Organization ) Americans are the fattest people in the world. 55% of women and 63% of men over 25 are overweight or obese. “Compared to Europeans, Americans eat all the time,” writes Joanna Coles, a British correspondent for the Guardian. “At the hairdressers, in their cars, during college lectures, at the cinema , where they arrive clutching monster buckets of pop-corn, Doberman sized hot-dogs and containers(!) of diet Pepsi”
The Epidemic is Spreading Though America is the world leader in obesity ,Europe is quickly catching up. According to WHO (World Health Organization),almost one-third of people living in the European Union are now overweight and one in 10 is obese. 20% of women and 17% of men in Britain are obese. And the English are fatter than Scots or Welsh! The Czech Republic and Finland also have some of the heaviest people in Europe. Among the French ,Italians and Swedish the number of overweight people is dramatically rising.
WHY? We live in the era of fast food culture. We are always in a hurry. We have no time to relax and enjoy a meal. We want to eat now and we want to eat fast. Every day a new McDonald’s restaurant opens somewhere on our planet.
WHY? Another reason is a lack of exercise. We spend too much time in front of our computers and TV sets. We walk less, because we prefer to use cars or public transport.
What is tasty is not always healthy Chips and pizza are fattening. Coca –cola spoils our teeth.It has a lot of sugar. Hamburgers are high-calorie. Some scientists believe that food influences not only our bodies but our spirits as well. Food with lots of additives, fat or sugar can make you violent and anti-social. SO think twice before you start eating!!!

According to this table we can say that our senior students spend about 2 hours a day watching TV and almost an hour – playing computer games. We think it’s rather much..
But the good thing is that most of them do sports regularly- 3-4 times a week, though not all of them do morning exercises.
Fortunately our students have no bad habits like taking drugs, drinking, and smoking. But they have one problem with healthy eating. Half of them eat fast food and its not good for them.

4. Teacher:As far as the topic of our unit is” Healthy way of life”, “Healthy eating”, today we’ll start our lesson with discussing one of the main health problems - excess weight or obesity. Later we’ll try to find the way of solving this problem. Now we are going to get some information about it. Listen to it attentively. Be ready to answer the questions:
1. Why is obesity so dangerous?
2. What are the main reasons of obesity?
Pupils: (PPT “Obesity – the Killer of the 21st Century”).
Teacher: Now you see that obesity is not only the problem of the USA and Europe. The epidemic is spreading. Nowadays it’s the problem of Russia too. Now that you have watched the presentation, will you answer my questions, please.
Why is obesity so dangerous?
Pupils: It can cause diseases (heart diseases, diabetes and stroke).
What the main reasons of obesity are?
Lack of exercise.
We spend much time in front of our TV and computers.
People do not walk.They use public transport and cars.
5. Teaher: I hope you can remember some very effective things not to gain excess weight.Give some advice:
Have much exercise. Do morning exercises.
Take smaller plates and put less food on it.
Eat more fruit and vegetables.
Don’t read or watch TV when you eat.
Chew slowly and carefully.
Forget about high-calorie snacks.
Drink water or juice instead of Coke and lemonade.
Have your meal at least 2 hours before you go to bed.
Eat less fat and sugar.
6. Teacher: You have told us about some very important rules of taking food correctly. But I think not less important is to know what a balanced diet is. It also helps to be fit and healthy. You will have some handout sheets and do some exercises. ( PPT “Healthy Eating”). Look at the blackboard and try to understand what the main important things for healthy eating are (Slide 1)
Teacher: Now listen to the interview! Try to find the answer to the following question: “From what food do we get these things?”
– Write it in your handout lists while listening! Do ex.1 in you papers.
INTERVIEWER: Maureen’s going to answer lots of questions about how to train the athletics. She’s also going to answer your questions about food. What should young people eat, Maureen, if they want to be fit and healthy?
MAUREEN: Well, the most important thing is balance and variety. When you’re training, your body needs lots of different things so you must eat different kinds of food. You should eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables because they give you lots of vitamins, especially Vitamin C which is important.
You should also eat enough food with carbohydrates, because when you’re training you need a lot of energy. You should eat bread, potatoes and pasta. All these things give you carbohydrates. But you mustn’t eat too many sweets or chocolates because you’ll put on weight and they’re bad for your teeth.
Finally, protein is important when you’re training. For protein you must eat meat and vegetables, like beans. You should also eat plenty of eggs and milk. Eggs and milk also give you calcium which is important for your bones.
INTERVIEWER: Thank you very much, Maureen.
Teacher: Have you done the task? Answer the question, please.
Now let’s check it (slide 2).
7. Teacher: Now let’s try to understand why these things are so important for us. Read the text in your handout sheets. Now look at the next slide and answer the question why these things are so important for your health (slide 3).

Minerals - 2
8. Teacher: So now let’s sum up what is a healthy way of life? Don’t forget the reasons why people get over weight, what healthy eating means. What are other things that can ruin people’s health.
You should have a balanced diet (what is a healthy diet?).
You must eat 7 important things (Carbohydrates,Protein, Fluid, Vitamins, Fats, Minerals, Fibre)
You should have much exercise to be fit and healthy.
You shouldn’t have bad habits (What are bad habits?- smoking, drugs and alcohol addiction)
9. Teacher: Our students made a social survey in our high school (grades 8-11). They tried to find out whether the students of these classes have a healthy way of life. Now the group will tell us about the results of the survey.
So to sum up we can say that our senior class students mostly lead a healthy way of life. But… what are the main problems? (Spend much time watching TV and playing computer games; eat fast food)
